The Pethericks channel are restoring a French Convent and have just finished the ceilings, they have done a fantastic job keeping it simpathetically. Worth a look if you don't already follow. Great metal treasures.

I admire your feelings for old architecture and your positivity regarding what is possible. You are obviously a business man, as i was, but you are carrying out this work not for profit, but for the passion you have in restoring this wonderful old Irish property. Well done, i look forward to seeing the waterwheel when you remove the said wall. Now retired i will follow you with great interest.

The original metal pieces may not have been painted but, instead, treated with a bluing process, which creates that deep grey/blue/black dull finish. The bluing process also helps to preserve metal. While painting them black would also help to preserve, the bluing process allows you to see more of the actual metal smithing and retain the "age" of the piece more than painting. There also appears to be some lovely antique furniture! You may have some "treasure" there. The waterwheel room would make a wonderful enclosed garden room. The piano wood frame may be trash, but take a look at the metal instrument inside; it can be repurposed in a variety of ways.

Wow thanks for your advice lets see if we can do that bluing process id love to know more

I like that you want to keep native plants in plants. I do hope you plant new native plants as you go. Too many areas have imported plants and other shrubbery that should not be there. They crowd out the native stuff!

That's the plan! Only native trees

I absolutely love that you’re restoring this!! We have an old water mill near our hometown here in US Pa thats for sale, my wife and I would love to buy it. The problem is we have the money to buy it but we are just afraid the restoration is over our heads. It’s great getting to see you live our dream. Keep up the good work

At 27:20 the old worn chain thing is a part of a horses rig, through the oval loop went a bit of wood that went over the horses shoulders, and the loop of steel a hook went through that ant attached a chain to whatever the horse was pulling.

Wow thanks so much. So that was horse iron. Ill have to check to see if ive more horsey stuff on the ground it would make sense that the property had horses

The Pethericks are renovating a convent in France, they had similar things happen with the floor over time. They lifted the flagstones dug out the earth properly fixed the sub floor and replaced the flags. They also installed an underfloor heating system, which is great if you are replacing the floor totally but is expensive. Oh yes perhaps you should first practice with a smaller arch over the cast iron gate next to the cottage. Then attempt the huge span. The cost of timber you quoted seems a bit excessive. Perhaps you should use free pallet wood for the shorter pieces (front to back) as you’re not making a thick arch … as 80cm should be overly plenty (the usual length of usable pellet lengths).
@BigAl-Castle3 ай бұрын
Wow. Yes you are totally right thanks im going to do that. What a fab idea with the arch and the pallets

Be careful with the ivy on that chimney, ivy is notorious for destroying mortar and making walls unstable.
@BigAl-Castle3 ай бұрын
Yes its already taken down a wall as the wall was so weakend but ill take your advice on that health issue hopefully the cottage is as strong as the rest of the cottage

The caretakers cottage…Comparing the floor level with the hearth level it looks like a tonne of cement was poured in. This would be why there is no floor to hearth transition (hearthstone) and why the door lintels are so low. There may even be flagstones under that concrete… if you’re lucky.
@BigAl-Castle3 ай бұрын
Yes i agree edward i noticed this it seems they simply put a biscuit mix screed down. Needs to be dug up but if there are flags they are going to be dig up also to get the insulation down

Not knowing what your plans are exactly… how about making, or remaking to be more precise, that gap into a garage?
@BigAl-Castle3 ай бұрын
There is about 1 acre out the back of the massive structures in think if i keep this a living area the back can be converted into garages
