↳ Hi! I’m Abigail (she/they). I love learning languages and using them to live a multilingual life. I post videos sharing my honest experience learning, improving, and maintaining multiple languages, and tips and advice based on the things I've learned along the way. My goal is to create a supportive community of people who love languages and the things we can do with them as much as I do! My current languages-- English (native), French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Bulgarian.

My 2023 was awful, speaking of languages. I haven't touched a single page of my German textbook since July. The only thing I managed to do was to start learning Yiddish on Duolingo and to read a couple of novellas in French. But, same as you, I'm full of hope and enthusiasm for 2024. Yesterday I made one grammar excercise on my German book (I started the A2 level last year or the year before, I can't remember 🤦🏼‍♀️) and I'm currently reading a classic full lenght novel in French and later today I'll set my schedule to make room for consistenly learn languages at least three times a week (I'll be so happy if I manage to do that, I'm not aiming to more than that). I hope your year will be better, languages and life wise!

Hi 👋🏻 thanks for sharing your goals! These are also my favorite videos every month. Here are my goals. They’re divided into three sections of four months since that will map onto my university semesters. January - April Tagalog - I somehow tested into advanced Tagalog after learning it for a year, so I’m taking that at university and really excited. My goal is to just do well in the course and on the assignments; it’s gonna be a lot of written and oral assignments. Mandarin - Beginning this year! Of course, this a marathon/Everest kind of language, but I know I want to learn it at some point, and I feel passionate about it now so I decided to start. American Sign Language - this was my “first second language” and I don’t really have any goals for it 😭 actually that’s not true, I did tell myself I’ll email the professor who teaches it at my university, if I don’t feel too busy, and I’ll ask about ways I can get involved with the ASL classes. May - August No real goals, since I often don’t feel like studying in the summer and I’ll decide when I get there if I feel like it. But, I would like to do a lot of immersion in Mandarin, again, if I feel like it. September - December I want to take the introductory Mandarin course at my university, I feel like if I’ve done a few hundred hours of immersion by then, a little speaking for a class won’t hurt me. I am a casual believer in the idea of delaying output, but I definitely didn’t do that with ASL or Tagalog and my ASL output is really comfortable, but not always proper grammar, and I don’t worry much about my Tagalog output since I mostly learned the language to understand texts and conversation, but replying in English is always fine. (Sorry for the run-on sentence 😫) That’s pretty much it! I reallllly try to let my future self decide how they’ll proceed with things, since they know more about my life at that moment than I ever could! I see Whole Year Goals as sort of an aspect of Letters to Your Future Self. It’s like, cool to look back on, but totally okay to chuckle at what your past self thought you’d be doing 😅 Encouragingly, though, my end-of-2022 self actually nailed exactly how my 2023 would go. I doubt I had such luck this year, but we shall see 🙂 Happy new year and happy language learning!

Don't worry about not reaching your goals, stuff happens in life and we feel overwhelmed. I set as a goal for the last 3 months of this past year to focus only on Hungarian as a way to rekindle my knowledge and make it go further. This year I plan to invest on langs I already speak, like Russian and Arabic.

I love these videos and always look forward to them! This year, I am still working on Norwegian, but instead of monthly goals, I have monthly projects/challenges. So, January I am following a 30 day study plan from a different language learner/polyglot. February will be Journal review month. I watch Norwegian TV shows/Movies and then write reviews about them in Norwegian in my journal. I also have a reading goal - one book a month. Good luck everyone!!

Hi, can I ask you a question? My main method is watching TV and KZbin with subtitles and translating the words I don't know, that got me to B2/C1. What would you recommend I do to move forward? I can understand most of the content on KZbin without subs however I still need subtitles for tv shows. I just want to be able to understand the media and read books and things pertaining to my liking. Do not intend to speak and write all the time

Great to see you back 🙋🏾‍♀️🥰 Edit: I have one goal this year - consistency! I was horribly inconsistent last year. Spanish, Russian, and Mandarin are my primary languages.

My only concrete goal is to attend my French club every week. After that, it's watch KZbin and videos when I can in French and Russian. I will go to a Spanish or other language meetup from time to time. I'm just not going to count how many times I go. But I still love watching other people succeed. So I look forward to hearing more updates from you. Thank you.

@@PolyglotProgress Our French group meets in person. Not only do we have a nice mix of native speakers, intermediates and upper beginners, we also go to dinner, dancing, parties, other French language meetups, and other fun activities (not always French related). It really is part of my social life.

Maybe you'd benefit from changing to one language and achieve a high level. That way language learning won't be a chore. You can just change all media to that language and use it just like it's English. That way you'll have a level where you can do anything you want in that language
@PolyglotProgress

Funny enough I actually cut out a part of the video where I talked about how I think focussing on one more often this year than in previous years started to make it feel more like a chore! I definitely get how for many people multiple languages can be overwhelming, but having multiple definitely feels better for me for a variety of reasons. Just goes to show how individual language learning can be!
