My 240z on the dyno at Z bash

I put down a max of 130.5rwhp and torque at about 135ish. L24 tripple 44s exhaust.

Thank you! Congratulations on joining the club along with your Dad and the rest of us!! Now performance wise you need to know how much you plan on driving your vehicle. For a weekend fun car i would do the following: 1) Make sure your car is mechanically sound. Fix all leaks, give her a tune up, etc. 2) Decent suspension: strut bars, frame rails, sway bars, bushings, springs and shocks. 3) If you have flattop carbs (not the dome shape ones) swap them out for the earlier versions

Thank you for the advice! What i ended up doing was swapping the l24 for a bored and stroked l28. I ended changing up the most every jet (fuel, air, pump, idle). Ill be posting a new video of my current set up soon!

ohh no worries! i didnt take it that way. the thing is that most stock non turbo Zs make around 90-130rwhp. i just dont want to see any more Zs going to the scrap yard, so im a lil defensive!! sorry. Trust, i thought i was going to be putting down a ton more at that time. then i started seeing the trend of low hp from the other 2.6l, 2.8l Zs and eventually I was glad to see my 2.4l pulled as much as it did. ill be posting some race videos soon that way you can see what these old na motors can do

think about it this way. this Z is about to be 40 years old. the head only has 2 valves per cylinder, and its not even a crossflow type. it weighs a little over 2000 pounds. i promise you it will smoke your cavalier with 130hp. i have yet to update, but i recently pulled 205hp at 5k, and 216ftlb at 4.5k and its nowhere near complete. long story short, when dealing with the s30, dont let peak numbers mislead you. its all about the power to weight ratio and torque, which is where the s30 excels.

@de0ndre hey thanks de0ndre! i pretty much tuned it enough to idle lol. turns out my 3rd carburator (the one closest to the cabin) might have a bent inner throttle bar. so while all the others are pullin air at one rate ive got one going crazy lol. supposedly its not to hard to fix...

ahh. well since this vid ive added about 70hp to the wheel. on average a hot street Z can go from 180hp-280hp+ and similar torque ratings, depending on the set up. the thing about these car's is that they weigh very little, so anything over 200hp and this car becomes quite competitive.

the horsepower that that car put out should have been a lot higher than that if you have a 3.1 stroker in it, because those cars came stock with around 130 to 135hp (i heard fuel mixture problem so that could be it but i dont know) just saying, not trying to be mean are argue But i do love the Z (i have a 1983 280zx GL)

@MistahMofro i wish i could tell you! it seems to start as a msa header 6-1 to a 2.5" pipe and ends up at a 3" end. most of the exhaust rusted haha. no badge on the canister either.

@br1anzkilLs my friends got a very well ported n42, crazy cam, and rebuilt l28 base and he's only putting down 190. im running a e88/l24 so i really doubt it would get those kind of numbers and still be streetable. btw my car came with the 44s.

after that i would look at gearing. The BEST way to make power is making sure your Z can breath! so save up and take your head (preferably N42 or P90 depending on your compression ratio) to get the best port job possible. 130HP would be from a relatively stock L24 and it's not exactly a money pit putting some coin in an L-series. You can get some massive gains from cam and head work not to mention extra displacement. However with a Z looking as nice as this, I'd be happy with 130HP and just to cruise around in it. As the Lotus moto goes, if you want to go fast - Add lightness :0

I made 186WHP with an ITS built engine (ITS means no cam and only port match 1" in) I installed my race prepped head with cam and made 201WHP. All done with SU carbs. Now I installed my phh44 and hoping for 220WHP.

most of yous sit there and read peak numbers without contemplating the entire rev trace. peak number dont mean shit if theres nothing below them. datsun wasnt gunning for big numbers because their cars didnt weigh 2tons. i laughed my ass off the night my buddy picked up a early Z car tail while we were ripping thru KC Mo in his healthy 440 challenger RTat 2am. That lil Z passed us when we ran out of gear at 138mph. 130hp-vs-450hp dosent compute does it? thats what he thought to.

this was the 2.4L. Also, the 300hp you're thinking of is at the crank. 300whp takes some work to get to, or a one sided curve.
