My favorite thing to do in #thehobby is attending Card Shows. I try to make it to as many as I can, and this is my second card show of 2023. It was about a 2 hour drive from my house to the Bay Area, but it was worth it for the size and quality of the show. There was a wide variety of dealers from vintage to modern to Pokemon. I purchased four cards in two deals at this show, and was able to buy one of my favorite all time cards. I was super excited to walk away with 4 cards of Hall of Fame players from Vintage Baseball and Vintage Football.

It’s so refreshing to see a card channel not based on profit and spending ridiculous amounts of money. Nice emphasis on vintage cards. I’m 28 years old and vintage is where it’s at. The paper, the emotion, the smell, holding a piece of Americana, nothing like it.

Yes!! Exactly!! I appreciate the kind words. I’m just a regular old collector who loves collecting cards. I’m not some rich guy that throws around huge amounts of money. I’m just a simple teacher and enjoy sharing the hobby with other collectors so we can connect and share experiences and opinions. Nothing more and nothing less. 👍🏼

Thanks so much for the kind words. I wish I had more card shows around me so I could do more of them, but Northern California usually has about 10 per year. I'll pretty much be at every one and will post videos of them. They're fun for me to make, as well.

i love the walk you took to think about Ted. That was a + $10 walk. I’ve taken those walks after getting the dealer’s best price only to return for a better “best”. That walk helps you think clearly - and so often saves you from a rash decision and sometimes earns you a further discount! (And sometimes the card is gone when you walk back)

If you think about it - there’s just no real downside to walking away. Has the price ever gone UP after you left the table? No way! Sure - sometimes the card is snatched up by someone else - but you still broke even with the cash you didn’t spend!

It’s been my experience at shows or flea markets that if the price isn’t right walk away. I usually use the method of telling the seller that they can make a deal or risk having to bring the card(s) back home. I can buy most of these cards online. I didn’t drive to your booth to pay EBAY or retail prices. Gotta wiggle a little bit. Sometimes sellers don’t like it, but if your intent is to get rid of inventory, then you can’t be stubborn. Not saying they have to give it away, but be open to flexibility.

Where do you find out about these shows? I'm in the North Bay and would attend many of the same shows if I knew they were upcoming? Keep up the good work!
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards Жыл бұрын
I appreciate that so much. Thanks for the kind words. There are really two places I find out about upcoming shows. First, I use the Sports Collectors Digest website. They have a VERY up to date list of show dates and locations. Here is a link: sportscollectorsdigest.com/collecting-101/show-calendar#california The next one in the Bay Area is a show in San Jose on February 18-19 at the Westgate Shopping Mall on Saratoga Blvd. Then there's one on February 25-26 in Concord, which I'm planning to attend. MOST shows have flyers laying around for other upcoming shows. So, I try to just snap a picture on my phone of those, and then put them in my iphone calendar when I get home. If you're ever curious, you can always shoot me a message and I'd be happy to check for you and let you know if I'll be there or not. Also, I can give you an idea of the type of dealers that the show has had in the past if it's one that I've attended. :-)

How ‘bout that! I attended a show today & picked up 11 raw NM HOF cards from 1971, 1974 & 1975 & a mix of 10 graded baseball & football HOFers from the 80s. It’s ironic that you mentioned the ‘84 Dickerson bc I got that one too. Love those mid-60s Philadelphia football cards. You made some nice pickups especially that Mr. Baseball! 👌 Good negotiating with that seller btw. I wouldn’t pay $280 either 👍

Would you that this show offered more or less vintage cards than the card show they put on back in December 2022, where it was one of two shows you attended in one day?
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards Жыл бұрын
Great question. This show had about 5 dealers that were pretty much solely vintage. The show in December with two shows in one day had about 9 or 10. So, as far as vintage goes, the Concord show had more vintage. The shows in Sacramento that are held quarterly usually have 7 or 8 vintage dealers as well. So, if you're looking for vintage, I'd recommend the Sacramento show at the Wyndham or the Concord Show featured in the two shows in one day video. I hope this helps.

@@byronsinclair3956 I’ve only been to that show once, but there were a solid 7-8 that were vintage only. And really good stuff. I’m going to that one too and I’m hoping those dealers are all back.

Just curious, at what age do you feel a card is "viintage"?
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards Жыл бұрын
Depends on who you ask. Some people consider 30 years old to be “vintage” while some consider it 50 years old. For me, anything before the “junk wax” era of cards is borderline vintage in my eyes. So anything before 1980 is bordering on vintage to me. I enjoy that golden era of baseball for my collecting….from about 1950-1965

I found on internet a special card I wanted 1972 Roberto Clemente Excellent condition... What's fair price?
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards Жыл бұрын
Great Question. Here's the process I always use for determining value: I go to Ebay and look at the recently sold items, which is an option in the filters. I focus on the "auction" prices and not the buy it now prices. I find an average of the last 3 or 4 auction prices that the item sold at. That's usually a fair value of the going rate.

I’m new to the hobby as it is now. How would you go about resubmitting the Ted Williams? I thought once they were slabbed it was in there forever without damaging it?
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards Жыл бұрын
The grading websites have several different "categories" of grading. Most people grade cards that are currently ungraded. But, most of the grading companies also have a "reholder" option, where you can keep the same card in the same grade, with a new slab. Another option that most have is a "regrade" option where you can ask the company to take another look at it. Some people will remove a card from a holder by "cracking" it out of the slab. There are lots of videos out there on how to do that, but you do run the risk of damaging the card.
