The risky watch is RM'S. NO WAY $400 WORTH OF CARBON IS WORTH $500,000. People are getting shot for their RM. They are a very trend happy watch. When the market crashing, crypto gets wacked there won't be any buyers for these watches. A watch you can't even wear it black tie without looking like a clown watch. Last show everyone was selling, not so much buying. Looking for normal. 36 mm is the perfect size

Watches as investments is something i descpite. A watch is ment to be worn, not just bought and stored as a future investment.

I'm a pretty active stock & options trader, and one thing I love about that VS watches: hedging. If a watch's value goes up and you're worried about it suddenly dropping in value, your only real option is is sell it. It's very binary; you sell or you hold. With stocks or options, if I have a solid gain and I'm worried about losing the profits but I don't want to outright sell the position, then I hedge! I buy a put option, short a call option, buy some VIX, etc. There's any number of ways I can protect the position from short term volatility and draw downs. Watches...there's just no way to do that. Maybe we need a watch derivatives market?....

Awesome conversations as always. Lots of people are seeing watches as investments these days, and there is no denying the money that is to be made if you have the pockets to do so. However I am sure that as watch enthusiasts we can also agree that there is an investment in how happy a watch makes you feel when you wear it. The investment in happiness would be an interesting conversation to hear your perspectives on.

I know it's all the rave but I can't take watches seriously as an investment. Maybe as inflation adjusted heirlooms it makes sense, but only if your outlook is more than a decade. If you want to effectively lock in a value, you're in a good place in life to part ways with that money and you don't have to think about it, and you have no intension of selling the watch for more than 10 years (and it's from a reputable brand and maybe fine metals), *then* watches maybe are an investment. I think liquidity is the main factor. Everyone thinks they have paper gains and are rich when the market is great, but the problem is in market conditions when it's time to sell a watch because you need cash, everyone else is also selling watches and you can't find buyers at the price you want. You're a forced seller in a market with no real buyers. Think 2008 when people were trying to sell anything to cover their mortgages. I'd rather think of my collection of watches as heirlooms to pass down to family members.

You’re not wrong but having landed a sub date from AD in 2021 it’s hard to ignore the appreciation. Also there’s more millionaires than ever, recession doesn’t hit everyone the same. Hard to say it’s not the new normal with a larger wealthy class in the game hunting too.

Bro i’m with you. I recently have become obsessed with horological history and the different specs of watches but I can’t take the “investment pieces” seriously at all. To be fair though, Bitcoin still makes me laugh if that tells you anything about my investment knowledge.
@Arc15172 жыл бұрын
Yes, the vast majority of watches are NOT investments. Allocated and discontinued PP, Rolex and AP are fairly safe. They will likely drop from crazy highs but I do believe new norms will be established. eg: Hulks may not be $30K in two years, but you won’t ever buy a Hulk for 8500-10k again. You just won’t because the readily available alternatives have upstreamed so much too. With Royal Oaks and Nautalis where there are at, Rolex sport watches at 30K kinda make sense. So when the top dogs fall a bit, so will the others. But again, I think a Royal Oak probably has a floor around 30K at this point, which would bring a Hulk back down to say 17K. There are simply enough people who want certain models and dealers with deep pockets don’t need to rush sell their inventory.

I also do not understand wy they do not make the octo finissimo in....35/36 mm. They could sell thousands ! Omega, Rolex, Breitling etc did it ! And by the way, it tooks me some time to find a wellfitting AP R0 in 33 mm from 2004 (15000ST, designed by Mme. J. Dimier herself). Perfect proportions and fits my whrist so good ! Let's go Signore Buonamassa !

Hearing the words "watch" and "investment" are such a turn off especially for true horologists. I get the trend now is looking for pieces that can increase or at least hold their value in the after market but I believe that's the problem with the overall luxury watch market right now especially with people just wanted to buy and flip all the Big 3 (Rolex, PP, AP). I think people have come to realize that they can put their money on these "tangible assets" and treat it like the stock market or crypto in a way, which definitely ruins the experience for genuine collectors and just people who wants that singular piece to give it either to themselves or to a loved one. Crazy world we live in now.

The Mickey is a retrograde movement. It's going to be expensive just based on mechanical complexity. I deeply dislike Disney. I think the Mickey watch is extremely cool and would be way cooler if it had some other mascot on it. Or no mascot - just the movement.

Completely agree on the Hulk. I had the opportunity to buy 3 from AD over the course of time and only bought one. It’s my daily wear and the issue with selling it at $28K now is there isn’t a good substitute. I highly doubt a Hulk drops back down into the teens, unless Rolex throws a green dial on the new sub line immediately, which would be dumb. Rolex is good at keeping ppl wanting what they can’t get.
