Great video. Value for money has become very important to me as a watch collector/enthusiast. Since I’m not a millionaire like you guys (😉), I’ve had to be smart with my money and what I buy to get the most value out of my dollar. I’ve always wanted a Rolex Day-Date and there’s no way I would pay or can afford the new Day-Date 40s. I discovered that you can find 36mm Day-Dates, 18038 and 18238, for $12k-22k depending on condition etc. After looking and searching, I found a mint 18238 (double quick set) with original boxes and paper for $17,500. Crisp edges, no bracelet sag, and beautifully aged day and date wheels. I sold my Submariner, Speedmaster, and Tudor to get this. While those three are great watches, you find them on everyone’s wrists. A solid 18k yellow gold Day-Date on the other hand is not something you see everyday!!

I love this approach to watch collecting and "investing". A question on the Lange. What about a white gold modern Saxonia from Lange for the early Lange? Will the Saxonia not hold it's value in 30 years?

Thanks for the discussion. I think there is a couple of points on value for a watch that sometimes people miss. Vintage watches were made in smaller qualities and the frog foot Rolex was because they were hand painted dials. There is value in scarcity. Design is important for value. The Royal oak design is worth a lot and has been refined over 50years. The design of the size of hands case bracelet all make a good watch as a piece of art. If Mona Lisa had an ear that was too big would it still be as valuable? And last value is based on who is buying the watch and what they want. High end price people want different and unique. Lower end tend to want something that is dependable and quality, Christian and Michael want something that has history. Value of anything is subjective but you can’t blanket apply value to different buyers. The guy looking for a Richard Mille could care less about a chopped Iron Eagle. The guy looking to complete a set of vintage submariners could care less about an a lange Sohne. You have to look at each watch in its appropriate category and historical context to determine its actual market value otherwise you come across as ignorant to the current buyers market and can’t actually see value outside of your person preferences. Cheers 🍻

Oh come on Chopard, I held it tried and it and placed it back down. It’s not about showing the watch to someone and saying why there’s an identical watch at 18K more… it’s about wearing somenthing with pride even if no one knows it and not a “would have liked the more expensive one but..” I agree with most of the others but Chopard shouldn’t make somenthing in between an AP and an Aikon 😅

Elegance definitely goes to Patek, I think the VC Overseas has the best bracelet in this space owing to the micro adjustments and the exchangeability and strap OEM options, although the Nautilus did push back with micro adjustments in the 5811, yes there is no easy switch system, but who’d want to take off that bracelet anyway, right? Chopard has some work to do

*A MINI ANTI ROLEX RANT... Think I did okay with my IWC Mark 16 for $3000.... Still available for that price which is half of the current model... really great watch. I really can't justify paying huge money for new Rolex models. For much less money in most cases you can get an older Rolex model, like you said, or Omega, JLC ultra thin 34mm, Blancpain Villeret, Zenith Elite, Cartier... and so much more.... and it's more unique and special.... to me anyway.... I suppose if you do get a call and its retail prices then its okay , but I find most modern Rolex just too heavy and chunky and thick.... is it just me? Even the 36mm models are nearly 12mm thick... Rolex should show more skill in their watch making and create thinner cases. It's just one example of them being a high volume of production machine.... not as refined as we deserve for the prices they charge. I honestly believe that. I've owned Omega and IWC. And really loved them for much less money and with no waiting lists or kissing any AD's asses.. I've also tried on vintage Omegas, Tudor, IWC and others.... and on several occasions, I walked into ADs and tried on a few new Rolex models like the sub, gmt, gold Daytona , datejusts and OPs...... just not that impressed with them

Oris makes a beautiful line but to be perfectly honest I don't see the deal other see, they're quite expensive for the levels of finishings, just look at the price of replacement bracelets they're definitely shooting above their weight. Not in a good way. Second hand prices also reflect the fact they're more of a trend item than timeless pieces.

One thing's for sure watches aren't investment or it isn't a hobby anymore. I see them as pure loss often if they increase that much in value I'd feel obligated to flip them, that's what happened to all my Rolex how could you not sell at 5x+? What's happening in the recent years is just weird market conditions you can't count on that for your retirement markets flip too fast. Only 40 yrs ago pocket watches collectors were often making fun of people who collected wristwatches.

Due to the fact that plating tech didn’t really exist at the time the thickness of the gold “plating” is much thicker than the microns today. However, given the wear and tear of time the layers slowly shed off so it’s really the same same but different

How is that Hamilton worth $3000-4000? Literally all the ones that have sold on eBay, pretty much identical to that, sold for between $476-$949. Pretty sure you overpaid if you paid $1500. There's one thats not exactly the same, but close, black dial, full set for $549 or best offer. Even the highest ASKING price on eBay is $1995 (which they can ask any amount they want nobody is paying that much). You could buy 6-8 of these watches for $3000-4000. I'd say someone would have to be a fool to pay that much for one of these, judging by current, actual sold prices.

I love watches but as an economist, I find this talk of value laughable. Cherry picking a few watches that IN HINDSIGHT have gone up in price is not in any way investment advice. 99% of watches lose value immediately after purchase. No one knows what prices will do in the future. If they did, they would be instant billionaires.
@arghjayem

The watch market is as much of a scam as the jewellery/diamond market. Artificial scarcity in order to increase prices. Rolex in particular makes thousands of Submariners every yet, yet they’re never available in their stores without a purchase history…total scam.

I see your point, but there are certain markers, if that is the right word, that help. The type of metal (even special steel can make a difference), limited or not, and perhaps most important, the movement. Is it new, is this the first use in a larger production run? Or is it a great movement about to be discontinued? For example: the Lemania used in the Speedmaster, was also used in the Carrera re-edition. Those Heuers are now worth 4000 euros and more. You could buy one new for less than 2k in 2000. The prices jumped after Omega announced a new moon watch movement.
