Im 42 and I just got my metal braces on a few weeks ago. My brother gave me some lash-back about it but it is the best thing I ever did and wish I didn't wait so long. I had one lateral missing and another lateral that was a peg. I decided to pull the lateral (done today) and have my orthodontist do a canine substitution. I will have them on for at least 18 months. Usually adult braces are quicker then when adolescents get them, because the time period between adjustment or tightening is every 6 weeks instead of 8 weeks. That means more soreness and pain though. The funny thing is, I am a professional and actually had a 2 hour job interview after I got the braces on. Lol, you definitely do need time to adjust how you speak. But, I didn't care and I was not self conscious one bit. Anytime you do something to better yourself, should get respect. Loved the post btw. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I've been bugging my parents for 2 years and now I'm finally getting them! I have done a research and explained to my parents why i need them and what's wrong with my teeth (i have a deep bite which causes a tiny lisp, gaps between my top teeth and my bottom teeth are crowded) i also explained to them the negative impacts of not having straight teeth (what I'm saying is that you should try doing that) hope i helped!

For all of those asking if it hurts to get braces: No opinion will help you. Every experience is different. For example when I got mine it hurt a tiny bit but only on the day after and every time I got them tightened. However, my friend was in HUGE pain. She couldn't even eat a mashed potato. So it really depends how sensitive you are to pain. Also, some Advil or other pain medicine can really help. :)) GOOD LUCK!!! they're not as bad as they seem

Epic Panda Chick When you go to the orthodontist, it won't hurt when they put on. But... They hurt the first 2 to 3 days when eating and sometimes it just hurts randomly. It's a real pain, but you will get used to it. Hope this helps

I know everyones braces experience is different but I would like to share a bit of mine! I had braces for 5 years and got them off last summer. When I had them removed I had no pain it did not hurt getting them off or the next day. I always brushed and flossed my teeth so they were very healthy. NOTHING HURT, really the only pain o had was when my teeth were shifting and moving. So please know if you're getting braces it will not always hurt! So don't be too scared :)

My braces didn't hurt, I guess I should be happy about this, the only thing that annoyed me was that I couldn't play the flute very well after I got my upper braces on. For about two months I played worse than a beginner. My tone was really bad and I couldn't play any high notes. But then I got used to it and it's ok now. I'm so ready to get them off. I have them for 3 years now. My braces cost about 10'000 CHF (that is like 10'000$). Btw you are so pretty❤

I'm still kinda young and had just gotten my (Damon Q) braces two days ago. I have two upper teeth that look like Dracula's fangs, which is the very reason the dentist/orthodontist recommended *Damon Q.* - - - - - 1.) It's a must that we (braces users/wearer) should count the brackets and have to maintain that all brackets must be present. 2.) Prepare cold water ALL THE TIME, because the first month is very painful as the teeth are forcefully moving. 3.) Remember that you might not be able to bite... It's very recommended that you (as a braces user/wearer) must eat soft rice (whether you like it or not), have soft foods. Avoid sticky/hard foods. Especially gums, candies, pencils... 4.) *It's painful.* 5.) *_Even if it really hurts. Like, HURTS SO SO BAD, You must (re)acknowledge the amount of money being spent on applying the braces._* So yeah, those are the only things I can say as someone who'd just started her journey towards *(hopefully)* straighter and better teeth. :DD

Yep the first 3-5 days are pretty bad. It's been like a week but it still hurts slightly if you try and bite down on something hard but it's pretty much like normal 😁

It's great to live in England where they are free bcs of the NHS :) I hated them for the first 1 week.. they hurt like hell but now I am starting to appreciate them for the price they would cost if I wasn't lucky to get them for free and to be honest, they make me more confident than before.

If you still have baby teeth, and you dont want to wait for all of them to fall out on its own, you have a choice to get it pulled out or not before you get braces. I had to get 4 of my teeth pulled out.

I have to get 4 pulled before I get braces but my wisdom teeth are starting to show up so I might have to get more pulled. It just depends on if you have any extra teeth that are in the way.

Us ours are anywhere from $4k-10k, and if you’re under 18 insurance will usually cover most of it. Sometimes all of it. Adults however, it’s usually out of pocket but u can find some insurances to help.

i have a pretty bad overbite and ive been using braces for about 3 months now. because of the overbite, my jaw tends to sink in thus making it seem as tho i don't hv a chin. so i have a really bad profile especially from the side. i really hope that with braces, my face shape/profile can actually improve.

Omg I literally have the same thing as you but they told me that I have to get and operation for my jaw but they are trying to fix them with the braces and I think that are working BC my overbite is getting better.

Andrea Avina yeah i've been reading online, people with overbites usually correct their jaws through surgery which i don't want to undergo. however, i've read some comments online saying braces alone can help fix an overbite and improve your profile. i dont need my jaw to be extremely perfect, but i just want it to move slightly forward just so i can have a better profile. im glad to hear yours is getting better, so it does really work and changes ur face here and there huh? :)

+GilbertEffendy my teeth were pretty much perfect except for a gap that i had but i didnt really care about it. when i was 9 went to the dentist he said i had an overbite so i started wearing removable braces. but they SUCKED and made no difference even though i wore them religiously. so when i was 14 the dentist decided that i had to wear braces to fix my overbite and it's been 3 years now and i have no idea when im getting them off. really this was all a waste of time.

+Ana Clara Campanelli, I'm sure your braces are not a waste of time. I wish someone had told me to get braces when I was 14. I didn't know my teeth are being eroded, literally the improper bite was slowly causing my teeth to wear off and it was only in my late-twenties that my dentist told me that I should get braces many of my teeth are like 70% of their original size because they were striking in the wrong place and were wearing out. Until then I only thought that braces were to make the teeth look perfect, I had no idea that not getting braces means I'm getting damage to my teeth which is irreversible. I got those removable "invisalign" plastic retainers around the age of 30 and they didn't fix much because it's hard to brush floss the teeth after every meal, putting them in without brushing meant inviting tooth decay. I eventually got metal braces and they have fixed my bite to a great degree.

Keelan Doherty My first color was Mediteranian Blue since it makes your teeth look whiter. I would recommended, blue, teal, baby blue or even black if you want that "polished" sort of look. I got pink and my teeth looked yellow, but currently I was Teal and they look fairly white. I would first stick to blue

Keelan Doherty I just got mine on Tuesday (June 2nd) and I got black 1) because I've heard stuff saying it makes your teeth whiter and 2) I didn't want go to risky on choosing a bright colour that I wouldn't like A lot of people say to sort of look at your wardrobe and spot out a common colour(s) and either a) choose the colour or b) choose a colour that looks good with that colour.

Do not get any light colors, or when you eat stuff like ketchup it will stain them and they look yellow, I'd recommend like dark blue.
