In this recumbent trike vlog, join me in Part 2 of my 30-day cycling challenge where I decided to ride my Steintrikes Wild One recumbent trike each day for 30 days in a row. On Day 1 I started with only 1 km, and added 1 km more to the ride each day, hoping to reach 30 km on day 30. The idea was to get into the habit of riding every day, and so I started really small to ease myself into it. This is Part 2 of the challenge, starting from day 16, to the final day 30. On all days I ride within the city of Novi Sad, without leaving to regional roads, so you can also see different parts of the city. I hope you like it!

I appreciate Stein Trikes sponsoring too. It's great to see a manufacturer help popularize adoption of trikes. Trikes are a great alternative to bicycles for all sorts or reasons, no least of which they can provide cycling mobility to people with disabilities.

You are completely right! The guys from Steintrikes are really great, we truly appreciate their support. Trikes are so rare here, but they really offer many benefits for different reasons, I hope they can get more popular in the future 😊

Congratulations on completing the 30 days challenge. For somebody who is "solar powered" there were some difficult moments so to see. That deserves most respect. Steintrike wild ones are made for off-road (but maybe not for driving on a dumpyard) Talking about cold feet, I had the same problem. So this winter I bought a new pair of shoes. They are called: Northwave Himalaya (not sponsered ;-)). One size bigger then what I normally take so they are not so tight around my feet. I also tried inlay soles that get warm by a chemical reaction, but they were no good. Then I let them warm up by putting a warm cherry stones pillow in before I put them on my feet. That was much better. In winter I also have a transparent fairing on my trike that keeps my feet protected against cold wind and it also protects my legs against the rain. Unfortunately such a fairing (from Terra cycle) is quit expensive. Novi Sad seems to have a very nice city center. All the time that I was watching the video I was thinking that there should be pancakes at the end, but there was a healthy alternative.

Hahaha thank you for noticing my struggles in the difficult weather I had on some days. And the dumpyard street was really crazy, it's good that I took it on camera because even some of my friends living in the same city didn't believe it existed! I think I will try some heaters for my feet first, but if I continue riding a trike regularly through the winter I might also think about investing in warmer shoes (mine are spring/summer type so that plays a big role). On a standard bike, I never had this problem, I think it is caused by the recumbent position. A good dinner is always worth it! We usually try to eat healthy food, but sometimes the pancakes are on the menu as well 😀

Nice vlog again! We really get to know your city. Respect for finishing your challenge!. I used to get numb feet, especially in the cold, but also during long rides. What helped me is changing the way I cycle. I started learning myself to not only push but also pull the pedals. That way your blood circulation in your feet is much better. Another advantage is you're able to produce more power going uphill or against the wind. Also the power to your chain is spread more evenly, which is useful on gravel uphill roads or in the snow.

Exactly! It's always fun to explore new roads every time - you never know what to expect. I think it also makes me more aware of the surroundings than if I take the same roads every time. 😊

Always enjoy seeing Novi Sad, the good and the bad (plastic bags at the market). Loved seeing the narrowest street. I have been listening to audiobooks and podcasts when I ride, and am debating whether keeping one ear free to hear traffic is a good choice. Here are some factors I've considered: I tend to ride fast with e-assist (utility cycling), so wind noise in my ears is a problem. Earbuds actually cut that wind noise down. I learned from motorcycling that chronic wind noise contributes to long term hearing loss. I read a lot about bike radar, 2 rear view mirrors and being aware of traffic from the rear. But in my estimation, there is little to nothing you can do when a car is approaching from behind and is going to hit you. It's a bit like trying to prepare for fire in your house with smoke alarms, if you knew you'd never be able to exit in time. So I have become comfortable with only hearing emergency vehicles and relying on my sight (with a left hand rear view mirror) to help me navigate traffic. I ride extremely defensively, with intent, but don't expect my sense of hearing to aid my decisions. On the other hand, it is nice to have an ear free to interact with neighbors and people you encounter on the street. As you've said before, triking attracts a lot of attention, and we're better ambassadors when we are friendly and respond to people who ask questions or say hi.

Thank you for the comments! I have also been thinking about whether it's OK to listen to anything at all while riding, and if it's better to listen in one ear, or both ears... On a regular bike I didn't use to listen to anything, as I feel I need to pay more attention to everything around me. On a trike I feel much more stable and safe, so this was the first time I started listening to something while I ride, and I don't think it affected my awareness (at least not significantly enough to notice). I totally get your points about the noise you get in your free ear, and also that there is definitely nothing you can do if a car is approaching you from the back and that generally we rely more on sight than the sounds - I also use my rear view mirror and double-check when I want to cross the road etc. However, from a legal point of view, in Serbia it is against the law to have earbuds in both ears while riding a bike/trike, so I am limited to using only one. I don't know if that is the case in the US?

@@bici.family Yes, different states have different laws here, but generally you'll find an obscure, unenforced law about wearing "headphones". I was once pulled over on my motorcycle by a motorcycle police officer. He began talking to me and I had to hold up my hand and say, "One moment please, officer", as I pulled off my helmet and removed my earbuds. He didn't reprimand me for those, though I did get a fix-it ticket for missing rear reflector, when the actual stop originated from excessive speed. It's a sad case of white privilege, that I was let off with little penalty, but my point in raising it is, that I don't believe the earbud laws are generally used against folks. One possibility that could be interesting to try is the sophisticated noise cancelling earbuds that minimize the outside noise, but still allow you to hear important stuff like sirens as a police officer pulls you over for speeding on your trike. ;^)

Hello.. have your mom who sews make you come custom, removable, washable liners for those grocery baskets.. You can put your groceries in them, and when they need a wash, just remove the liner to wash.. that is what i have for my shopping. I even had liners made for my panniers, that way, if groceries leak inside, they don't make a mess of the pannier.. I used a fabric that you would make a diaper bag out of.. That is completely waterproof and washable.. (don't use an old diaper bag.. LOL) Make a fresh new one. LOL

Hahahah definitely not an old diaper bag! But thanks for the idea, I like it and will see how we could make something like that! 👍 We also usually carry the old plastic bags (that we got on some previous occasion) to at least reuse them several times.

Cold feet, the cause of cold feet is the elevated positions of your feet. So your warm blood has trouble going up to your toes, fighting gravity. Dress warm with double wool socks. I use Hi-Tec military boots with isolation in them, with isolated soles. One seize bigger then my summer shoes. Keep out the rain too. Those boots are nevertheless light weight, not as heavy as the regular militairy boots. Only in freezing - C temperatures I get cold feet. I also stop to have a break. Then I walk up and down my trike, to get the blood flowing again. During winter I wear boots from 45NRTH, very warm and these boots have SPD clickers in the sole. But very expensive.

Mathematically seen, you're "halfway" after day 21. But nice challenge and congratulations for achieving it! Also I'm happy to see cycling lanes popping up. Even in the Netherlands, I still miss them sometimes.

That is true, I passed the halfway in kilometers only after day 21! 👍 Our city is probably the best cycling city in Serbia, but we hope that other parts of the country will follow the example. And also, there is still plenty of space for improvement. But you're right, it's very nice to see things moving in the right direction 😊

Congratulations on completing your challenge. Nice to see your children out to wave you home, a deserved welcome. Your commentary in not your home language was also commendable. How many languages are you fluent in?. Haven’t spend some time in Europe it always amazes me how many languages each of you speak, yet in the UK we resolutely stick to one language hoping everyone understands us when we visit. Thanks for showing us around your home city. Continue to enjoy your triking and hope the family gets to join in. Cheers

Thank you for the comment! We hope to go riding more as a family, but this spring has been more like winter or late autumn, and the weather doesn't seem to have an intention to change any time soon. And in this cold rainy weather, it is not that fun to go exploring nice places with kids as we had originally planned. I hope we will have some nice weekends soon to be able to go all together somewhere 😊 Our family is bilingual Serbian-Hungarian, we use both languages at home. Other than that I speak English (you are more qualified to judge that), and also French (we lived in France for one year in 2019 so we can all communicate in French, but not on a completely fluent level).

Tell us about your puncture proof tires. Unless I missed it jn an earlier video, I do not think you discussed the topic. For many of us, getting a flat tire is not fun so knowing more about how to prevent flat tires is important. Thanks.
@bici.family
@bici.family 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I have briefly mentioned our tyres in one of the previous videos - "Steintrikes Wild One Review | Our recumbent trikes in detail", but we might make a more detailed review of the tyres after some more kilometers traveled. Endre has the Schwalbe Marathon Plus, which are I guess the golden standard of puncture-proof tyres, and I have some Mitas Stop Thorn tyres, which I haven't heard of before getting our trikes but I am very happy with them. So far both of them are very good, we had no flats so far. Fingers crossed it stays like that! Also on our regular upright bikes, we had Continental Touring Plus tyres, which have served us for many years with no punctures, but we haven't found this model in 20" size... The main thing about all these tyres is that they have an additional layer under the surface, which makes them harder to puncture, but also makes them a bit heavier. However when I first changed from a standard tyre to a puncture-proof one, I cannot say that I noticed any difference in the weight, the bike didn't become harder to ride because of them.

Congratulations! I have a questions regarding the challenge. Was it a round trip equalling the distance or was it one way was the distance for the day not counting the trip back home? Other than that amazing ride. Good job!
@bici.family
@bici.family 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It was the whole distance per day. I thought it would be fun to try the different distances and find routes around town that are (almost) exactly the distance - and it was fun, at least for me 😀 And it also made me get out of the house every day - which was my original idea behind starting the challenge.

So cool, even synchronistic, that the 180-ish year old book you are listening to on this challenge has something to say on the building of resilience through gradual daily increases (in dosage in the book, but trip length in your case). You said it was a book from your childhood, did you realise that beforehand or be inspired by it?
@bici.family
@bici.family 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! That was such a good moment! I actually came to that part on the last day of the challenge ! I read that book 20+ years ago, so I forgot the details like that, so no, I was not aware of it or inspired in that way. I just really liked the book, and in fact all the books written by Alexandre Dumas which I was reading a lot in my teenage years, that I wanted to "read" it again, and as I recently learned French to the level where I can understand a book, I decided to try with the original version. So it was not intended or related to my challenge, but it just came out perfect. 😊
