The greatest and most fun car I ever had was a 1998 Saturn SL2 with twin cam 1.9. Started every single day in either -10° other 110°.... A 10 gallon gas tank at one point cost $19.00 to fill lasted all week . Ran up and down the New Jersey turnpike at 70 to 85 mph for hours with ease. I lived with the slamming into gear transmission and burning 2 qts oil every 1,500 miles but absolutely awesome automobile....

The Saturn S-series that had the SOHC engine used the MP6 auto transaxle and the DOHC engine used the MP7 auto transaxle. It seems as though some of the gear ratios were different between the two. These were great little cars. I worked on them for over 10 years professionally.

Fair warning though if something happens to the alternator bracket and it breaks off of the motor there's no way to replace it other than to replace the block. My father and I struggled with that issue for years using JB weld and other fixes. That alternator being able to move like that let that belt move over into the power steering reservoir and slice right through it one morning on my way to school. It also squealed under all circumstances lol

People always complained about these cars not being fancy, and they didn't have enough tech, but that wasn't the point of them. The point of them was to have a cheap, reliable cars for the small family. And boy did Saturn succeed!!! There was also a lot of American pride in these cars because they were not only designed from the ground up, but they were built here in the U.S. It was one of those companies that brought U.S pride to anyone who bought one. These cars were always underrated and misunderstood. Not only did they always start on first turn of the key, but they also handled very well in the snow and rough conditions. Saturn was ahead of its time. Sadly GM completely took Saturn over and just re-badged crappy gm platforms before the brand ended. So we can thank GM for getting rid of one of the most reliable and well thought out cars ever... But whenever i see an original one on the road i can't help but smile a little knowing that, that American built car is years old and still running while brand new cars are dropping like flies.

This car I exactly like my first car, same exact options, except mine was red. Absolutely loved that car! Unfortunately I rolled it in 2016 and have been looking for one in good condition ever since that wasn't outrageously over priced.

I bought a 2001 Saturn S Series with only 65,000 miles on it just this past October for $1.00 Yep that is not a typo. It runs great and have put 10,000 miles on it already. I just changed out the serpentine belt and taking it next week for a tune up and some other preventative maintanence.

In regard to the hood, you can actually buy the carbon fiber one from Seibon and they still sell it for that car. Also ud be correct about the wrong trans, you would have faster acceleration but less top end in the SL1trans with SL2 head, etc and got a full engine rebuild and 10 to 1 high compression build with cramk knife edging, low boost E85 with a head from R.A.C.E. for my port and polish and mild deshrouing, ARP main and head studs, etc, stiffer springs, lower, 1.6 inches and polyurethane bushing master set on the car

I still think they are attractive. I like this first generation S series. They share a similar look to the Olds Cutlass Supreme of the same era. Those little Saturns were quite popular and they even had events where you brought the car back to the factory for a "homecoming" They were good cars.

if you could find a junked one in the same color and swap the parts out itd be nice. I love them with a 5speed swap and lowered on nice wheels. A friend of mine had a wagon and sold me on how cool and fun it was. Great gas mileage, reliable, and cheap parts.

Call me crazy, but I kinda like that thing. It's worth an ac compressor, and a little body work, if you're going to use it for a work vehicle.

The Saturn Automatic transmissions have a problem with a bold that likes to come loose. It causes it to shift funny. It wont damage the transmission if you get to it fast enough.
