Saturns were good cars. They were basic transportation that weren't crap. It's a shame how GM let it wither like they did everything. It's nice that some people are saving these cars. The teal interior looks like it could be factory. It seems like something Saturn would have done.
@mbd5012 ай бұрын
It started out in the early 90s as a new GM division that would be different from the others, and it was. But unfortunately, by the 2000s they were letting it wither. Then they shut it down in 2010. GM's still using their Tennessee factory, though.

This was my first car!!! I had a ‘94 SC2 in this exact same color, but with a manual transmission. It was handed down from my dad and the engine threw a rod at 305,000 miles. I loved it though.

My roommate in college had one of these that was 15 years old at the time. It was infinitely more reliable than my other roommate's brand new Jetta.

These were everywhere in the 90s and people just overlooked them as cheap trash cars. Crazy to see how appreciated they are today. Or it shows how little people think of modern cars.

i dont drive at 31 so from an Outsiders look; cars are more trouble than theyre worth, its literally a never ending money pit, modern cars are Garbage and with the info-tainment screens...nah get that the fuck outta here
@karoltakisobie66383 ай бұрын
They weren't considered cheap in Toronto. They were cheaper than Corolla or Honda of same class but more importantly, they were available on short notice. Unfortunately for Saturn there was even cheaper alternative in hyundai and kia and those were around everywhere.
@EpictheEpicest3 ай бұрын
It's a combination of even modern used cars not being very affordable, and modern cars just being big, over-engineered, difficult to maintain, frankly boring looking status symbols. If you're a person in your 20s making $50k a year and paying rent, would you rather go into debt for a brand new gadget hummer that does 0-60 in 4 seconds, or just get something for $5k or less than is easy to fix and maintain, will still get you from point A to B, and at least looks unique while doing it? Like he said, you can feel like Nightrider yourself, and break the bank for even less now.

My mom (God rest her) had one of these Saturn coupes in eggplant for the last twenty or so years of her life. It never gave her any trouble, and the cloth interior meant that the odor of cigarette smoke was fused into its soul (much like it is with my own, and I’ve never smoked a day in my life). Seeing one of these always makes me feel good; thanks for this piece.

I had this exact car for a few years. It was just a beater, but I did some work to it. Stripped out everything to make it even lighter. Racing seats and harness lol. Put some performance parts on and ran pretty damn good for a plastic junker.

I had to give up my teal '94 SW2 last year, and this really makes me miss it. The dash and steering wheel were exactly the same, but my odometer was stuck at 167k instead. What a faithful car.

I had a few SW2's (the wagon one) and they were honestly really good little cars. The 5 speed ones would actually scoot pretty well for what they were.
@drewzero13 ай бұрын
We had a 94 SW2 which had been given away twice, and was still a great car. It was an auto but I drove it in "Perf" most of the time and was quick enough. I wished it was a 5 speed until I took it to Ikea and had to drive an hour and a half home with a bed frame in the back, my knees crammed up against the dash... Wouldn't have been able to reach the clutch with a full load!

I had a 98 SC2 and i still have a 96 SC2. You can tell the driving dynamics are a bit more sporty in the 1st gen. I take issue with your assessment that it can't handle though. Yes it does have a good bit of body roll but it stays planted i have taken some tight corners that are posted at 35mph at 60 that i couldnt do in most cars. The auto is slow like a 9.5 0-60 but motorweek got a 7.6 with the 5 spd in 1992.

I had a 92 SC2 for 7 years before I had to junk it due to the transmission grenading. I hit two deer in one night and all it did was destroy the fenders and break the popup headlights. Horrible in the winter though, a little bit of ice would cause it to spin out.

Tried to buy one of these in '93 for my then-wife. It felt pretty good at the time during the test drives, but couldn't come to a deal on our trade (Saturn pricing was fixed.) Ended up with a Mitsubishi Eclipse instead, but likely would have been happy either way.

Did sport mode make any noticeable difference in the way it drives?
@williamsinger41243 ай бұрын
Realistically it just held the gears a little bit longer before upshifting, thus letting the engine get further into the powerband and making the shifts slightly firmer. In normal mode, they upshifted a bit earlier and the shifts were softer for fuel economy. The engine behavior was unchanged since the throttle body was cable operated, not electronically controlled.
