My 4 Year Old Helps Fly to the Avionics Shop

My son helps fly us to the avionics shop to get a new Garmin G5 HSI installed. It's a short VFR flight with him being his normal cute self. :)

Nice video Kevin. My Grandfather took me up when I was 3 & 4 years old in his C170. I'm 51 now and still remember those flights. He inspired me to get my PPL. I was fortunate to take him for a flight. Great times. Your Son will do well.

I've been a CFI since before my two kids were born and neither wanted to learn. The boy is an engineer and the girl is a nurse, now. They just fly with me when they want to fly or when they want to take a friend up.

Very neat experience for you both. I remember (believe it or not) driving my Dad's Greyhound double deck super scenicruiser when I was 2. Not intentional, but turned out well. Ahhh, memories. Great future co-pilot. I can hear my my now 41 year old son at 4 years old doing that. 5 seconds after rotating, " Dad I'm thirsty, I'm hungry, I have to go to the bathroom." Your a good Dad letting him experience things like that. I tried to let my son see and do things growing up in hopes that something would stir his passion for a career that he really liked. It worked and I can say he turned out to be a pretty good son. Good for you Dad.

My Dad started flying when I was about nine, flew with him for many years, then I got to take him flying in my Cardinal RG, he was freaked out not having wing struts but got used to it, Dad's been gone many years but still have my memories, maybe your little one will take you flying someday, keep videos coming.

Very cool. I've taken each of my kids up and they love it. I'm also looking very closely at a few 310's (or maybe a 320). Working on my CME right now and will fly our club's aztec for a while. But having a ME plane that can perform on a single engine is a big comfort even when flying by myself. Just got to stay extra committed to SE ops proficiency.

I was looking between them and Baron's and the 310 actually performs a little better on one and you can get more plane for your money with them. In most conditions that I fly in book says around 400 fpm single. I've feathered one and it had great performance. Good luck on your plane purchase quest!

Excellent time to have those shoulder harnesses installed (sorry, broken record). Gotta say, my heart skipped a beat when Little Man moved the prop, but I am admittedly very paranoid about them. Wonderful video! Working through the (painfully long) process to get my Class3 back so I can do the same with my Little Man.

I had the same experience thinking about the prop or cutting his head on something sharp. I certainly bashed my head and got cuts from airplanes as an adult.

Shoulder harnesses will be installed at this coming annual inspection. :) Reference the prop, even though I know they are properly grounded, the mag's were off and there was absolutely no way possible there was a combustible mixture in the cylinders, I still wouldn't allow him to pull the prop through enough to engage the impulse coupling. So in short, there was no way he could possibly get hurt. That said, as a safety guy I can see the concern. :)

I am doing instrument training in a 172 equipped with dual G5's and a 430w. I honestly think the HSI is more of a game changer than the PFD. The needle automatically turns on course, shows distance to way point, and even has an additional magenta heading that shows your GPS ground track. Just line up the magenta dot with the needle and it tracks straight down the path without having to worry about wind correction.
