The idea of BIFL socks and underwear sound so insane but when you make upgrades to more quality materials and better construction, you really can hold on to them forever (pending any major changes in body shape.)

I've had the opposite experience with ExOfficio boxer briefs. They're the only underwear I'll use for long hikes, trail runs, or backpacking trips. Specifically the 9-inch length because the standard 6-inch tends to curl under pressure from constant leg/shorts movement. The 2 pairs I own were purchased over 10 years ago and still have the same elasticity in the waist and legs. There is a difference in quality between the Everyday and the more expensive Give-N-Go 2.0 Sport Mesh. The waffling you describe vents heat better than any boxer brief I've tried which is crucial to mitigate chafing. They're definitely not as comfortable compared to Under Armour, Nike, or Reebok athletic boxer briefs I own. But the ExOfficio blows those out of the water for outdoor performance and tear resistance.

I am surprised to hear about the Thursday boots. Not that I wouldn't expect the Nicks boots to be way better, but I've had a pair since the matte black version of the Captain model was announced (at least a few years) and they're my daily boot, no issues whatsoever so far. I don't know if I can truly call it "buy it for life" just yet, but for the cost I've been extremely happy. Maybe it is just the improvement over time like you mentioned, maybe it varies model-to-model, but I love these. I was burning through 3-4 pair of sneakers a year and decided I needed to give boots a try, have not looked back.

I actually had a nearly opposite experience with Exofficio underwear. Even as a bigger buy with some thigh rub, the give-n-go sport 2.0's last me nearly 6 years of wear, including field exercises when I was still in the army, plus hard outdoor work and recreation after. As well, preferring a longer leg I don't have too many other options that aren't just athletic spandex with no accommodations for my junk or a fly.

I bought a pea coat from Old Navy because I didn’t think I would like it. 20 years later it’s one of my favorite coats. It was marked dry clean only because it’s made out of wool. So I just threw it into the wash with some Downey. Hung it to dry and it still fits perfectly. Another piece I have since new, is a M-65 jacket, I bought it 30 years ago for $45. It still continues to serve me every year when it’s time to come out.

I bought a Barbour Beaufort jacket in England 35 years ago. I still use it. It has holes. It has hardly been rewaxed. But it still looks good. Nothing else would have. I also bought a pair of Barbour wellingtons that I had for 30 years and then the soles was slick as F1 tyres. Unfortunately I threw them away. The rubber was still fresh. No cracks. I should have had them resoled. I keep looking for bfi stuff and England has a lot. I have several Church shoes also more than 30 years old, shirts from Jermyn street in double cotton etc etc. The good feeling of wearing something out completely. PS! Have a couple of Landrovers too - 25-30 years so I guess I’m in there….

I'd like to hear about the companies promising lifetime repairs or replacement, similar to Darn Tough. How easy it is to get done, how nice the repair is etc. Some examples would be HardenCo Denim Company, Shockoe Atelier, Skinner American Goods, Outerknown S.E.A. Jeans (very sus on that one, website has sketchy legal small print) and West Major are the ones I'm currently aware of. All offer some sort of lifetime repair for one or more of their clothes offerings or straight up replacement a'la Darn Tough in the case of OuterKnown's Jeans.

I've had good experiences with Thursdays, but I also had a bad experience with the Dukes. The leather didn't seem to take waterproofing well, and just a few weeks working in the oil industry ate them up. I did wear them for about a year in total just to get my money out of them, but they were in awful shape at the end. The heel was all worn down, the foam was hard and offered no cushion or support, the leather was stained a deep brown, and they had countless creases. I have some Presidents that have held up well as a night out boot for many years with no treatment, and wore some Captains at work for a while that did very well until I messed up and straight up stood in two inches of used oil for like half an hour.

Darn tough socks are excellent in a refrigerated warehouse. I had a Leatherman wave for a month or 2 before losing it and replaced it woth a cheap clone that has been good enough. I lose sunglasses pretty often too and recently ordered and returned a half dozen pair around $20 from amazon to get a decent pair that are actually polarized. There's cheap stuff that's good out there but sometimes it takes to much work or lost money on bad products to find the gems. It's nice to have lists like this to weed out stuff that misses the mark.

After trying literally the best socks I could buy and wanting to like Darn Tough, they just couldn't keep my toes/feet warm in a Colorado winter, and trust me I tried to make them work haha The best socks I've ever owned bar none are the Red Wing Premium Safety and Premium Work socks! They have a higher wool content than Darn Tough, made in the USA, and the ventilated toe box is a game changer! They have a 1 year unconditional warranty, and I know thats not lifetime, but I'd rather have a sock that performs with a shorter warranty than have a sock for life that under performs. I'd love a review from you on those socks! The Prem. Safety are the heavy duty 77% merino wool thick socks; and the Prem. Work are thinner and 65% merino wool and are great for year round!

I am a believer in buying quality. Sometimes that thing is expensive, other times quite affordable. Examples Button down shirts - brooks brothers Oxford button downs. By far the best, imo. So good I buy them used now to save money. Jeans - Wrangler. Not quite a lifetime but every 15 years or so. And cheap to boot Underwear- Duluth Buck Naked boxer briefs. Dress shoes - Allen Edmonds. Not as good as they were but you can still get an older pair and get then resoled. Multi tools - Victorinox. ‘Nuff said.

Loved the comment on the lineman’s. They gotta drop or they go bye bye. I have 3 pair of Thursday boots. 2 from their Western line & 1 pair of the Presidents in Mocha Suede. I absolutely love the western boots. More than my Tecovas for comfort. My Desperado are so damn comfy & the Maverick’s are so damn light & comfy. The Desperados are my go to boot. The Presidents are just ok & I’m being generous. The fit is kind of sloppy & my right heel hurts when I wear them. As for socks, specifically work socks. I have several pair of the Fox River steel toe cushioned work socks that are running on like 5-6 years now & they’re doing just fine to this day.

I have a bit of an odd situation with my work jacket. My favorite light work jacket was an 80's USN utility jacket that my uncle gave me when I was a kid. I wore it a lot as a teenager and it just happened to be the perfect choice when I needed a work jacket I didn't mind getting oil stains...etc on. It was 20+ years old when I got it, and has really started to show it's age wearing through on the ends of the sleeves. The zipper pull broke a couple years ago so I bought a Dickies at the hardware store on the way home, I ended up hating that jacket and just fixed the zipper on my USN utility. I have tried multiple other times to replace it very unsuccessfully, from sizing to quality issues nothing worked out and I didn't want anything imported. Well eventually I decided to just look for another USN utility, and yesterday I received an unissued example I found on Ebay for $40. Now I think I'll probably to try and find myself a couple spares to have on hand, they're a relatively durable jacket but they aren't exactly a heavy canvas. So maybe not 1 for life, but one type / choice for life.

Have a pair of Maui Jims now... my previous "awesome" pair are now undesirable. I couldn't believe how much better these MJs are. Now I don't like anything else. Just one pair, though... Too expensive to have multiple styles. One lense did crack when I took a bird to the face on the motorcycle... But they saved my eyeball. Sent them in for new lenses and they reconditioned them to basically brand new again. Incredible.

I would imagine the sunglasses are good but are they really 400$ good?! I’m pretty happy with most 15$ pairs

I got a bolt action metal pen that takes pilot G2 refills from e-bay $20 US dollars. No plastic parts! It is a buy for life product.

Your inclusion of the sunglasses seemed interesting in concept but while you spoke about the clarity of the lenses you never said anything about the durability other than your acceptance of paint chipping off?

What else would you like me to say other than the pair I’ve used regularly for many years have no other signs of wear aside from some chipped paint. I don’t know what you are looking for.
