Would definitely wait for your take, Paul. I love how you don't just do what everyone else did, which was keep things in spec, an even apples to apples comparison. You enabled PBO, MCE, etc. as applicable to give every CPU its best chance, which is what most enthusiasts would do with their own chips. Strong work.

It was originally something I decided to do in order to take a slightly different approach towards my 12900K/12600K reviews, but I feel like if you're going to drop $150+ on an AIO cooler why wouldn't you be turning on stuff like PBO/MCE
@Carrinthe
@Carrinthe 2 жыл бұрын
@@paulshardware Exactly, but not only with an AIO. I run a 5950X with an BeQuiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 and if I leave it on stock temperatures stay well below 70C during benchmarks, leaving a lot of room for improvement. With PBO enabled and playing a bit with a negative curve optimizer setting my Cinebench R23 multi score is 29287, with cpu temperatures around 85C. Like you said, building an expensive system it's not very realistic leaving so much performance on the table. Especially with most of your viewers being computer enthusiastics.

It’s honestly the only way you should. PBO is on by default or set to auto. Similar to how Intel has let’s you unlock the power limit or turbo boost. I’ve seen a lot of the benchmark has intel with turbo boost and power limit Unlocked and PBO turned off. I’m like is that really how you are going to compare these CPUs? Only Paul and Steve accurately compare and benchmark these brands of CPUs. Other channels have people believing that the 12900k completely destroys the 5950x in every category and production work load because of it 😂

I'll probably move to another platform next generation for my gaming desktop and move this cpu into my server since 16 cores and 32 threads clocked that well should last me in a server basically forever. And in the meantime it's still a meaningful uplift over my 3600xt which while running other processes in the background feels a little anemic at times.

And the reality is, by the time AM5 is here the prices of these CPUs will be even lower. Honestly, considering the release timeframe, this is probably the worst time to buy a CPU if you're upgrading: we're roughly 4-5 months from the expected release and the price WILL go down. Especially on something like the X3D, where it's probably going to look fairly weak compared to the 7000-series and it's currently riding on the high of being new and cool.

Nice overview, and nuanced conclusion. What I would like to see is the suggestion for a someone with a mid tier gpu. Should they upgrade to a 5800x3d or upgrade to a 5600X and spend the extra money on upgrading the GPU. I think upgrading to the 5600x and spending the rest of a GPU upgrade would give more fps. To me the 5800x3d is only a consideration for even gaming only use cases if you've nearly maxed the GPU.

Paul, I love the late review as you actually get to put some perspective on how difficult it can be sometimes to troubleshoot when things go wrong. Not keen on the background music as it is a bit annoying. However, "Great Job". I'm also glad to see that you kept family time in perspective. Family matters! Another cpu review can wait.

Just got one of these bad boys to replace my ryzen 2600x. I was really torn on getting the better value with a 5800x Vs. the 3d or even just holding out for am5. My final thought was 3d cache is cool, it's only for gaming, and i can afford it and also am5 will be brand new so I might as well let them get things optimized for a couple years first.
@bafon
@bafon 2 жыл бұрын
I guess that for competetive gamers it will be the most sensible upgrade IF they're already on an AM4 platform with R5 3600(x) or below, for anyone else the 5900x/5950x would be the way to go because of the extra cores. But other than that the 5800X3D really is just a showcase of technology and what to expect from AMD in the future.

Paul - with the Radeon 6X50 GPUs rumored to be on the way, we need a 5800X3D +[rumored] 6950XT 'Last Hurah' for this generation AMD build! Maybe even a balls to the wall, newest, highest end everything 'sail off into the sunset(with 1000 watts of fury)' build, a high performance send off to the best that the 7nm generation of Ryzen & Radeon has to offer! It shall be glorious!!!

That's why professionals don't rely on just one test setup. You want to have at least two identical test setups. So when you run into a problem you can immediately check if it's a problem with your setup or a problem with the product you're evaluating. This can also save you a lot of time because you can run parallel tests.

FWIW, applying auto-oc on my 5700x gave me the exact same frequencies as your 5800x: 4.85ghz boost and 4.6ghz all core. I can safely say that the 5800x is pretty much dead. Just get a 5700x

Thanks for the review Paul. After much umming and ahhing, I opted to upgrade my 3600 to the R9 5900X in the end as it was around $70 cheaper in the UK than the 5800X3D. It was quite a tough decision though!

@@mehiskortel6435 To prolong the lifespan of my computer - getting the best AM4 processor I can before they go end of life later this year. The 3600 doesn't give me the full benefits of my motherboard as it doesn't support pcie 4.0 and resizable BAR doesn't really work. This was always my plan - got a lower spec processor at the time I built my computer knowing I would later upgrade. Managed to run my last computer for 14 years with only changes to GPU before I finally had to replace it - and that was down to having one of the best spec of CPU available at the time.

I will just hold on to my i7 6700 until AM5 comes out. I am building a PC that needs multiple cores to handle simultaneous dedicated servers running while not over-reducing clock speed to take account of single-threaded servers. With proper sequestration of processes, can perform workstation duties alongside the RX 6900XT, mostly production and renders. ECC memory optional until I have resources to do so, and not to spend too excessively just buying server hardware; I am not running a large business.

13:14 chart makes a bigger arguement for the 12600K than it does for the 5800X3D. Granted 12th is a new platform vs a drop in replacement, but still. Great PoC by AMD though
