I put an 8.8 in my 1971 Charger. Works great and I love it. I even have the parking brake working. I didn't even need to cut the drive shaft.

@orsonmercado1644 I did not narrow the axle. You will have to cut the saddles off and weld back on. Make sure you get one from a ford explorer with disc brakes and get the driveshaft yoke also . I bought a cross over u-joint from the large mopar to the ford explorer yoke.

Nice work. Mess the other carrier completely destroyed? It’s too bad you couldn’t just get a stronger aftermarket center section for the 8.8 since it already had disk brakes and the carrier, the housing did look a bit hammered though
@noboltsleftbehind
@noboltsleftbehind Ай бұрын
@@xozindustries7451 the original center section probably could have been reused, but those Chrysler parts are expensive. I would have spent many more times the price of my Ford axle just upgrading that thing. I like the fact that if I toast this Ford 8.8 one day, I can replace it for $200 and a trip to the junkyard.

@Eli1981-re5bh Ай бұрын
You should run some test welds before welding critical parts. Those welds probably wont hold. Also preheat is your friend, specifically on anything cast or forged like the center housing- that small torch is not enough. I suggest going back and gouging out the majority of those welds and burning them in again. Every spot that is not mostly smooth and uniform in your weld ( over/under fill ) is a stress riser.

@ the Ford has an 8.8” ring gear, 31 spline axles, 3.25” axle tubes. The Chrysler has an 8.75” ring gear, 30 spline axles, and 3” axle tubes. And the Ford’s removable rear cover means you can add bearing cap reinforcements, the Chrysler you cannot. How is it stronger exactly? And no cult-of-Mopar answers, I’m genuinely curious if there are any actual facts that support this.
