I put an 8.8 in my 1971 Charger. Works great and I love it. I even have the parking brake working. I didn't even need to cut the drive shaft.

@orsonmercado1644 I did not narrow the axle. You will have to cut the saddles off and weld back on. Make sure you get one from a ford explorer with disc brakes and get the driveshaft yoke also . I bought a cross over u-joint from the large mopar to the ford explorer yoke.

@@orsonmercado1644 4.10 gears with the locker. Mine is also SB with 727 trans. I have 15x10 wheels with 295/50 15 tires. I have a few videos on my channel. I will try and load a video in a few days.

Wow! I’ve never seen a rear break the caps like that before. That’s wild. Assuming the housing wasn’t ripped through I think it’s probably still usable. If I needed it I would reuse it anyway. Someone will want it for sure.

Probably collapsed the pinion spacer , you can buy / make a solid spacer they will hold high 9,s when set up , 8.8 works too :)

@@dbc105 nice, you’ll like it in your Road Runner. I didn’t mention it in my video, but those replacement clutches I installed were the Ford Performance versions. They have a nice positive grip but still just as streetable. Those wheels are American Racing VN501, the fronts are 7” and the rears are 8”. Offset is 0mm for both

Nice work. Mess the other carrier completely destroyed? It’s too bad you couldn’t just get a stronger aftermarket center section for the 8.8 since it already had disk brakes and the carrier, the housing did look a bit hammered though

@@xozindustries7451 the original center section probably could have been reused, but those Chrysler parts are expensive. I would have spent many more times the price of my Ford axle just upgrading that thing. I like the fact that if I toast this Ford 8.8 one day, I can replace it for $200 and a trip to the junkyard.

Nice Job! I was always under the impression the 8-3/4 axle was almost indestructible? I have a similar axle in my 90 Foxbody with aftermarket Moser axles and its held up well so far. You made the clutch pack replacement look easy, I may need to freshen mine up some time. Question: what type of welder do you have & do you recommend it? Thanks

@@peterbeningo4597 I heard the same thing about the 8 3/4, funny thing was after mine broke I started hearing stories about how other peoples’ bearing caps blowing out. I don’t think they’re as tough as people think 🤷♂️ I absolutely recommend my welder, it’s awesome! It’s a Lincoln Pro MIG 180, it runs on 220v.

@@ws2664 yes, the Ford has a flat circular flange vs the Mopar’s u-joint cups so I had to get a flange adapter and a conversion u-joint

Does the 8.8 have an offset pinion? The old fords did. If so, it doesn't seem to be giving you any vibrations, etc.

You should run some test welds before welding critical parts. Those welds probably wont hold. Also preheat is your friend, specifically on anything cast or forged like the center housing- that small torch is not enough. I suggest going back and gouging out the majority of those welds and burning them in again. Every spot that is not mostly smooth and uniform in your weld ( over/under fill ) is a stress riser.

@ the Ford has an 8.8” ring gear, 31 spline axles, 3.25” axle tubes. The Chrysler has an 8.75” ring gear, 30 spline axles, and 3” axle tubes. And the Ford’s removable rear cover means you can add bearing cap reinforcements, the Chrysler you cannot. How is it stronger exactly? And no cult-of-Mopar answers, I’m genuinely curious if there are any actual facts that support this.

@ funny, my 8.75 broke without much abuse, and I’ve seen 8.8s stand up to tons of abuse. We all have our own anecdotal evidence 😉
