Gem, I just got my first accessible kitchen in January after 23 years of chair life. It's amazing! We've remodeled the entire house. Roll in shower, roll under sinks, 36 inch doors and tile everywhere with"zero" thresholds, I love it. ❤️ I hope you enjoy yours forever! ❤ Derec

I’m so excited for you to see what accessibility features you are having. I moved into an “accessible” bungalow 3 years ago and had to have most of the kitchen redone just before Christmas because the original builders hadn’t done a very good job at all. They hadn’t included an OT or any disabled person with regards to what is needed and thought that a height adjustable sink would do the trick. The renovations have made it so much better but we couldn’t do anything about the actual layout of the kitchen. So the washing machine and fridge freezer are still tricky to access. If only builders would involve someone who knows what is “accessible” and what isn’t. Can’t wait to see yours.

“Adjustable sink” sounds like a nightmare! I’m glad you’re getting it sorted!
@wheelie262 жыл бұрын
@@VintageRayne it’s ok actually. When I want to use it I lower it down so I can easily reach and when my son, who’s 6ft 4” uses it he raises it back up to his height. The hob is on the same system

Had an accessible kitchen put in after 8yrs dealing with an ordinary kitchen. Best thing I ever did, especially as the designer was also a wheelchair user.

Oh, fun. We’re doing the same thing. Washing up in the bathroom, floor-leveling, and kitchen stuff everywhere. It’s both terribly inconvenient and exciting. I look forward to your finished kitchen!

Wish I could make my kitchen more accessible, but I don't really have that prerogative because I'm renting. It would be pretty easy because the lower cupboards and drawers are all on legs that put them about 6" off the floor, except that the dishwasher would have to be either taken out entirely (wouldn't be a big deal to me because I basically never use it anyway, but I don't have that option because it's not mine) or replaced with one that's about 6" shorter. Same with the stove/oven combo, except that that doesn't have counter on top of it, so I could still drop the counters on either side. I can't even count the number of times I've subluxed my shoulders reaching for things because they were too high. Hoping I can at least get my landlord (who's super nice) to let me add an additional handle to the front door (like what Roll with Cole and Charisma show in their accessible house tour) to make it easier to close it while in my chair (currently I have to stick my hand through the space between the door and the doorframe below the middle hinge from the outside and push the door shut - there have been a couple times where I didn't pull my hand out soon enough, and that hurt); knobs or handles on the dresser drawers that all currently have nothing, only a little lip barely big enough to grab with the very end of my fingertips (there have been times where it was literally impossible for me to open the drawers because my hands don't always like to cooperate); and blinds instead of curtains, because I'm not always able to climb up on furniture to mess with curtains. The only rule I have to follow with that sort of thing is to get permission before making any permanent changes (and since I can't just spackle and paint over the holes if I were to take the hardware off (since it'd be on wood and metal, not sheetrock), they count as "permanent"), so I'm hoping he'll say yes to at least the door handle and drawer handles/knobs.

Oooh this makes me excited, nervous and anxious, I'm having my kitchen and downstairs bathroom done in the near future, as well as having a new doorway put in between my bedroom and the kitchen, I won't be here for it as they said I'd be better out of the way so I'll likely be going in for some kind of respite care, so I'll not see all of the mess! I really can't wait for it to be done but waiting for it is making me a bundle of nerves! My local council are going to be doing it with a grant, I hope both yours and mine go well!

Woohoo! 🥳Trust me Gem it will be totally worth it. I had my kitchen fully adapted a couple of years ago and it has made everything so much easier. Don’t get me wrong the dust and having to plan when to stock up on water and washing in the bathroom was a bit wearing but it’s a great excuse to enjoy a take away or 5 😂 It will be worth the huge drain on your energy and pain levels. You may actually enjoy cooking again now it’s all laid out properly 😆

@@Wheelsnoheels this is the worst part as it feels like it is dragging on and having to be “on top of everything” when everyone is coming and going in the house is so draining. I hope your pain levels aren’t thru the roof 🤞🏻When they start fitting all the tiles, cupboards and worktops you do get a boost. I would always nod off on the sofa as soon as the trades people left 🥱 Hopefully you don’t have any delays so that next week you can just rest as much as you can and slowly start enjoying getting used to your kitchen. Hang in there, you will absolutely love it once it is all done 🤗🤗

I made the mistake of washing up in my bath while I was renovating the kitchen in my last house. It was all going well until I decided to have curry. My brand-new bath ended up with an orange stain. It took about three months for it to completely go. Don’t do the things that I do. They’re normally completely stupid.
