There ought to be a way to procedurally select every prop visible from a given point in the map. I don't know enough about Source to write that procedure or even know if it's possible with current tools, but I suspect that Valve might have made such a tool (even if unreleased to the public) to make that process easier.

@@MaxCE I use Source 2 myself. The whole notion of porting a map from Source 2 to Source 1 doesn't make sense because both engines use different measurement units. One hu in S1 = 1/16 of a foot, while in Source 2, 1 inch. Plus, if they ported the geometry over to Source 1, they would still need to make TONS of edits in Source 1 such as add nodraw brushes everywhere because Source 2 is mesh-based while Source 1 uses brushes, and only brushes can occlude objects from view in S1.

You're correct about displacements. Displacements allows Source to handle tessellation of these displacements based on visibility and distance. GPU's can handle 3D meshes and geometry much better now-a-days. While displacements in Source are BSP, they're explicitly defined differently than BSP, I suspect there's underlying lower/higher resolution adjustment based on these distances. Also, reading up - Displacements are handled in batches, similar to how the older func_details worked. This one mean while they're separate pieces in Hammer, they can be treated as a single mesh by the engine. And also: "There are three levels of resolution, but ultimately the number of polygons is determined by the size of the displacement. Cut one up if more detail is needed." would explain so many of them in Dust 2. EDIT: A little bit more research, updating for accuracy. Okay done editing. :p
@pfannkuchengesicht42
@pfannkuchengesicht42 6 жыл бұрын
Alessa Baker Source doesn't make use of dynamic tesselation. Displacements always are tesselated the same as specified by the mapper, regardless of distance or visibility.

There is model scaling for Gmod/HL2 Hammer, it's just buggy and not that good. There is a prop_scalable for EP2, also look for the keyvalye "Model Scale" ("modelscale" w/o smartedit) in prop_dynamic or prop_dynamic_override. It wont scale in hammer, only in-game. It also won't scale the collision model or it will be non-solid, so you're left with building your own collision model with nodraw (it also wont work on physics props)

I found a bug 3kliksphilip, I just wanted to let you know as I don't have a reddit or a following big enough to be noticed, so im telling you, maybe you got contacts that I don't. I do believe this is infact a bug, or a glitch as its glitchy when its performed. Basically, this is for casual modes and not competitive where teammates don't collide with eachother. How it happens is easily done, just walk inside a teammate, crouch down and then uncrouch afterwards, you will notice a glitch, a delay. A 1 second delay or so before you stand up, this doesn't happen if ur not inside a teammate. Its too glitchy to not be a bug. Like this so everyone sees, :D

At least it looks (based on the vid) like map decompilers available now mostly just screw up on newer map features. I remember mucking around with them 20 years ago on Quake 2 and Half-Life 1 maps and they wouldn't even get the basic map geometry right (as in you'd usually have several leaks to the void). In the end I only bothered to make one modified map: I used the onlyents option to port TFC's 2fort to original Counter-Strike (I managed to convince a server admin to try it - it was VERY boring to play on).

Hey Philip, I was wondering if you would consider making a video about backstabbing mechanics, what kind of angles are there, what sort of checks the game looks for. I was messing around bots and was just seeing what sort of janky angles I could get stabs from, and I was wondering if the mechanic had any similarity to the backstab mechanic in TF2. The difference here is that in that game, the spy picks up the knife to show that a backstab is doable. I dunno, not too much to it, but I thought it might be worth investigating.

I wish that the the original VMFs fro HL2 were available, BSPsource breaks so many things (not that unsurprising for a de-complier), some maps are so broken that they don't compile or crash on spawn

I don't agree : func_wall are used for optimisation. It doesn't create new polygons on the wall it is stick too, and it is ignored by HLvis.

well thanks. I subscribed and the reason is quite simple - people are changing nice maps because they don't know how to fix the problems with bots. they remove doors, and the like w/o knowing what they are doing to a map that took well over a year to make and screw them up. makes me mad. I never learned to map but now I want to. I helped a couple guys with their maps but I just always did the nav files. I told the admins of the server that I could easily fix the bad navs. most bad nav are because the mappers fail to update the nav files after making changes. i.e. adding or removing doors, windows, etc. at 65 yrs old, y not!!so, I want to possibly make it so they can't or don't need to screw it up.I was wondering, can I make maps off line?? I live in the summer, in Canada and no internet is possible but I have my laptop ( biggest badass one I can make). so, I have alot of time on my hands there and no one is around to bother me. what say you?? possible?? thanks.

I remember decompiling to vmf in the early mid 2000s and it was a crap shoot whether my machine would lock up when I loaded them in worldcraft errr.... I mean hammer editor. The output files were junk too... missing all kinds of stuff, splitting brushes up into random forms...

I've been wanting to get into map development for years, but hammer is a joke compared to literally any other content creation software, I doubt the Valve team still uses that archaic shit... we need new tools!

There's a modified bspsrc on the black mesa forums which Flavrans has made for better use with BM maps, and it dosnt require the notepad trick. forums.blackmesasource.com/index.php/Thread/30772-Decompiling-Black-Mesa-Maps/

Occluders in decompiled maps can be fixed by replacing all of the "Skip" textures on occluders with "Nodraw".

I was under the impression that because of the rumors that the current/new Dust2 being made with Hammer 2 the VMF files wouldn't be all that useful for current mapping with Hammer.

I remember when you put the "wallhack maps" on your server. Terrorists and Counter terrorists joined together to get on top of Mirage's Palace and stuff. I guess you forgot to put in some clipping brushes.

Hey, could you do an in-depth video about why you sometimes think you should have hit the enemy multiple times and then it turns out you did zero to insignificant damage at all? To some extent it is of course just people denying that they messed up some shots, but I sometimes also look at clips after my games and still think that I should have got the kill or at least some more hits. I don't experience this a lot in other shooters, so I'd be really interested to know what the problem is. Is it poor coding? Is it just the hitboxes? Are the servers really that bad? Is latency a problem? Or do I just plain suck at times? (Which could also very well be the case :D)

Video idea! You should make a time lapse of you making your own competitive map using sdk hammer. Then people can slow it down and learn from your ideas. What do you think? make it really simple and enjoyable to watch.

I got csgo two days ago using the steam gift cards and because I'm Australian it gave $14.98 I was dying because I had to go back out just to buy 1 cent so I could buy csgo but I did it, and the game is good but I was wondering, how do I get better? Btw I'm not even ranked yet.

Do you think the weird occluders and nodraw blocks are evidence of an improved, post-Hammer editor, and its automatic functionality?
