I tend to stare at gothic or alternatively dressed people, not because of judgement but because I like the style and I would look at them for 40 minutes just looking at every detail because I really appreciate it :D Edit: obviously staring is still rude, but not everyone who stares at you is judging you or has ill intend. Some of them are just mesmerized by your amazing outfit!

I'm actually starting to go Goth at 34. I'd always,wanted to, but I was very shy at school and didn't want to stand out, and then when I got older my career stopped me. Now I have a job where no one cares what I wear. I have been a pagan witch for 20 years but now I can wear my pentacle with pride and I figured that when it comes to going Goth, it's now or never! Wish me luck!

To me , a Goth is a person who feels this "romantic connection" to the death and macabre things , this sounds so wrong but you know what I mean. A Goth is a thinker , an artist and an enthusiast. Insulting a Goth is almost impossible , they're full with positive energy and great fantasy.

I feel safe in these clothing, if I put vivid color to my clothing I feel really strange, except if it is purple. I've actually found lately in the media, goth, or should I say, goth "type things" have become "cool," in a sense. Like all those dumb girls on tumblr wearing black and maybe a pair of creepers and thinking they're just so dark. Or when a celebrity wears a black lipstick it's always "yass goth queen," when there have been people beaten up and bullied viciously for expressing themselves. Just a pet peeve of mine, I suppose. And I remember this one episode of Criminal Minds where these two girls went to a concert, (they were sort of goth, but in one of the sub genres, I think it was cyber) and one of the girls killed her friend and drained her blood, and kept killing other people. It was pretty crazy.
@HaliaStone

C.J. Davis I remember that episode! (Although I don't think them being Goth was anything to really do with it; she had a severe case of Renfield's Syndrome and was being manipulated by the singer's manager) But I totally agree with the edgy tumblr shit, or people fawning over celebrities wearing dark makeup. When they do it, it's cool, but when I do it I'm a freak and should die? Yeah, get fucked.

ROFLMAO!!! Some 60yr olds ARE goth! I always loved dark fiction, Victorian times, black clothing, bats & ravens, skeletons & Halloween. We listened to weird, ethereal, experimental music in the early 70s . We listened to Alice Cooper and wanted a snake for a pet. We listened to David Bowie, Velvet Underground, Black Sabbath, Yes, & the Doors. In the late 70s, we listened to Bauhaus, Siouxsie & the Banshees, & Joy Division. Later, I listened to the Cure, as well. By the late 80s, we could finally find some decent clothing in actual, real stores, clothing that had elements of Victorian style. We could find dark purples & deep reds & we were pleased. Fast forward to today, some of us have gone through different phases as life keeps on; but still listen to the music, go out to smoke a couple of cloves & dance with others like ourselves. I'm lucky enough to have more than one good, Goth club in the area. So, please don't discount all of us 60yr olds. (Some of us still sacrifice an occasional goat; though afterwards we usually make them into a nice curry.)

@@serenedisorder4786 I'm not sure that you understood what the previous poster wrote. Goth is a genre of music, but it's also sort of a mindset and a way of approaching the world. I'm not sure if this applies to everyone goth, and haven't run it past anyone else, but I'd say a level of introversion is included. And it takes from punk an acknowledgement that the world of mainstream culture is fundamentally broken, but whilst punk rages against it, goth instead seeks to avoid it and create a space where we can feel comfortable, be ourselves, and have our own sort of fun. And there's no reason whatsoever why someone couldn't have had that mindset before goth music even existed. Of course, the bands they listened to weren't Goth, because Goth hadn't been invented yet! There's also no reason to limit yourself. I agree Black Sabbath isn't Goth. But so what? Paranoid is still a great song. The Velvet Underground isn't goth. But Venus in Furs could be played at any goth club without anyone batting an eyelid. The Doors aren't goth. But lots of goths love their music. Nico isn't supposed to be goth. But you could play her back to back with some Faith and The Muse tracks and struggle to explain why they are a different genre except for an accident of timing. There's other "before goth" stuff that a lot of goths like. For example Leonard Cohen, David Bowie or the band Suicide. Don't let labels limit you. Explore.

The reason that 'gothic architecture ' was named so was an insult. It was felt the style was uncivilised and uncultured like the wild Germanic visigoths from the earlier period. In the modern context, the first documented using of the term to describe the music sub-culture was Anthony H Wilson of Factory Records in Manchester and he was describing the band Joy Division. The history is fascinating I think :-)

I am not goth myself, but I really appreciate and am interested in the subculture. Most of all, i think it's so important to be accepting of all kinds of people; it is no one's place to judge someone based on how they dress/look. I actually really admire people who are brave enough to wear goth attire that is considered unconventional to most people. It's inspiring to see people like you able to express yourself outwardly and creatively (especially because I myself struggle with body image and often times am afraid to wear the kinds of clothes I actually like, because I fear others' judgment). We all should strive to be open-minded and caring towards all people. I would love to eventually live in a society where no one is scared to express themselves through fashion, makeup, music, art, etc,. I love your channel and your open-mindedness! I love your style, including furniture and music. I guess I lean toward Romantic, Victorian-type, as well as wear a lot of black, with jewel-tones, and you reflect that very well, with modern touches. Thank you for posting this. They starting writing Abby as less of the 'goth girl' and focused a lot on who she is and what relationship she has with Gibb's team. At first they focused a bit on her look, played to the whole she has a coffin, and shit to grab attention I guess. Her style up until the actress left started to be less of a cliche and more her own personal style.

My advice: Do your history research! You don't have to like all of the bands out there, all the fashion style, etc, but know who the beginners of the movement are, what goth means, and where it comes from! You don't have to like Siouxsie Sioux's music to be goth, but know who she is!

I think the worst representation of goths I've seen recently was that goth couple from Total Drama: The Ridonculous race. They were still my favourite characters of the whole cast but my goodness they were the epitome of every goth sterotype.
@muffetmissulena6540

The worst part about the Goth stereotype in that show is that Total Drama already has a good representation of a Goth person: Gwen. The show does a lot of things with her that break the stereotypes of what people think a Goth is.

a few weeks ago, my new boss asked me what nail colour I was wearing. I responded: "dark green". He said: "You aren't a goth, are you?" - this shows that people judge so easily and they really don't know what goth means. I am not a goth and I don't even dress dark or in any way that a person would think I am goth (although I really like it).

Real sigils are externally lesser known, and it's actually to the point where it's genuinely surprising if a piece of media or whatever actually has an accurate sigil in or on it. Hereditary and midsommar are good examples of movies where the director did research for proper accuracy.

Great points. Love your advice. Those of us in the various Goth genres are very diverse and I've only so far experienced other Gothly inclined to be encouraging toward diversity. That's why its so beautiful to see everyone rocking their own style and flair. So if anyone says or thinks Goths are against a persons individuality. It doesn't ring true to me. Otherwise we'd all look like clones. Thankyou for your video. You have such a beautiful heart.

The whole 'Goth is what you make of it' is not strictly true, you do have to have an interest in Goth music to be a Goth, otherwise you are just darkly inclined.... Other than that there are no restrictions to who can be Goth, it does not discriminate on gender, sexuality, race or any other factor

this was a really awesome video! whe I was in highschool I played around with the udea of going goth. The 'scene' trend was really big and I was into that but I kind of grew out of it when I found Gothic Lolita, I am pretty much in love with all things Victorian, as well as anything kawaii so lolita was just the greatest thing I have ever seen(I really loved the modesty of it as well being a Christ follower) but it is really hard to get your hands on, and after I became a mother it was seriously impractical, and I kinda fell into the trap of mainstream whatever I could find on the racks styles that were NOT me at all! And then I found your channel and I have really fallen in love with your channel, and your style and I have become inspired to start down my own path into the 'Goth world'. Thank you! Unpopular opinion: the use of occultic symbolism in goth clothing might be problematic. As someone who's Christian and goth I've found that the use of certain symbols isn't helping the stereotype that all goths are occultists. When I went goth and my mother did research online she became dead sure that I was joining some kind of cult. I get that many goths don't believe in what the original symbols stand for but it can't be helped that onlookers make the mistake that you do. It's like wearing the Swastika for for the aesthetic then being surprised when someone assumes you're a Neo-nazi.
@reereephillipsbeauty
@reereephillipsbeauty 8 жыл бұрын
I see your argument. However, my counter argument is that Gothic Architecture and Renaissance/Edwardian/Baroque/Victorian fashion plays a huge part with style and aesthetic within a lot of people and the way they dress. All of those elements and periods of history are greatly influenced by Christianity, hence the inclusion of crosses. The reason why the swastika isn't acceptable is because of its modern application. It used to be a hindu symbol, but was adopted and now symbolically represents genocide. Most of the symbols used in this 'occultism' and 'satanist' branches of religion/belief have simply taken symbols from Paganism, ancient greek, ancient roman and even Christianity (e.g. the inverted cross). I grew up Mormon, and my family is still practicing Mormon/Christians so I understand the importance of the cross.

And your point is very well put too. Misinformation is very damaging. I think assessment situations is the best way to move forward (i.e. I wouldn't wear certain clothing/accessories around Mormon family members out of respect)

ReeRee Phillips It's always painful for me when I see a really cute shirt or accessory but the design has an inverted cross or something along those lines. My mother would drown me in holy water. Either way thanks for responding to my comment. I often find that when I ask this kind of question I can't get any sort of meaningful response outside of people bashing my religion. It makes it even better that one of my favourite youtubers engaged me in a conversation. Keep being awesome! :)

I think my main problem with the symbols is that it's more about being edgy and offending people then telling them they're weak for being offended than being yourself. Goth in general society has evolved to be so disrespectful and obsessed with being "in your face". I can definitely see why everyone thinks I'm a Satanist despite me not wearing any symbols...

This is a very interesting video and so helpful. Especially for me, since I am still in a transforming phase from mass culture/ "normal" clothing etc. to the more gothy subculture. I wouldn't identify myself as a 100% goth because I am still very new and insecure about it and I mix a ton of rockabilly elements (mostly skirts) into my outfits. But I have to thank you for your videos because even if I was interested in the subculture for many years and had a very similar mindset, I was to scared to dress like it. You as well as black friday, tocic tears and the goblin queen encouraged me to dress how I like and not how everyone around me wants it. PS: I love history, so this video was like sweet candy for me.

Thank you so much for this video! I've always loved darker colors and spooky things and am now looking into the music aspect of the culture. But I'm Asian and not slim like many of the goths I see on social media (thank you again for addressing that issue) so I have been really hesitant on actually "being?" goth. I'm also kind of shy to wear a full-on "goth" outfit and a full face of makeup in public because as you know, Japan is not really accepting towards "outlandish" styles or anything different really, unless you go to Harajuku or Shibuya and other fashion hot spots so my parents have told me to dial it down a little bit out of concern. As for medias portrayal of goths, I agree 100% that what they're doing is offensive and not at all true because many of the actual goth people I look up to are amazing role models. Abby from NCIS is I think the only character that does goth justice in terms of portrayal, she is actually the reason why I decided to delve into the goth culture. Anyways sorry for my rant, maybe I'll send you a picture of me when I've got everything or most things sorted out!
