Dominic Nicholls, the Telegraph's defence and security editor, recalls his own tour of Afghanistan and the growing disconnect between Westminster and Helmand at the time.

Dominic Nicholls served in the British Army for 23 years, retiring in 2015 as Lieutenant Colonel.
He was deployed to Afghanistan between September 2010 - April 2011 on Operation Herrick 13 and describes the dawning realisation that Britain was set up to fail and the war could never be 'won'.
