It is very reliable and easy to maintain, 4 wheel leaf springs hold the weight well. Rebuilding the rear axle atm, it was getting noisy and needed new pinion bearing and carrier bearings plus some machine work. Nice that the engine is all mechanical even the fuel injection, no computers or electronics.

Excellent video. Love your first gen. I am the original owner of a 1996 Cummins 12V. I just did the KDP after 225K miles. Front main seal was leaking just a little, so took care of both with one fix. Wasn't much $$$. Stay strong and well, and enjoy the journey.
@tripperdonnie3 жыл бұрын
Ya I have been kicking around getting that KDP done. Did yours seem to be loose at all or was it snug? I'll probably upgrade the injection pump in conjunction with the KDP, get a 3200 spring, pin ,and nice rebuilt pump. My pump has very minor leaks.

The brackets are bending some from off road use, they do not appear to be pulling thru tho. I know many of these campers are directly bolted on the corners to the bed. Even with the springs to help absorb some of the big bumps the camper is taking some abuse.

Nice Alaskan! I just moved up from a '76 NCO to a '91 CO. Any advise on how to hook up the camper running lights so they come on with the truck lights? I also have to add rear brake lights because on my camper the back is 80" wide so covers my truck tail lights. Trying to do all this myself as most camper places would charge me bank to problem solve and wire up (if they do it right). Tks!

@dianee77783 жыл бұрын
Do you really need two couches inside? I would keep one and put something on the other side. Maybe a small bar table instead of the table you said you took out.
@tripperdonnie3 жыл бұрын
I use the lower bed a lot, it uses both couches and makes a queen size setup. Better for sitting up and watching movies. Also when traveling if I do not want to pop camper up I use the lower bed. I have a nice wood tv dinner table/tray I use to eat meals on if needed.

In your opinion if you were living in the rig fulltime how important is 4wd to get to spots where you would not be crowded or hassled?
@jeffhayden27373 жыл бұрын
Thank you for reply
@tripperdonnie3 жыл бұрын
Very important! without 4wd you are always paranoid, a small rain can trap you for days, a little snow for weeks. Sometimes you go down small hills that turn out to be much steeper when you try to go back. Plus you break an axle or driveshaft you should still be able to drive out.
@tripperdonnie3 жыл бұрын
@Andy Larson I cut a piece of plywood just small enough to fit in the access hole. I mounted all the electronics before sliding it in, then just had to hook the battery cable to it. I did make one mistake tho, my fuse breakout box is inaccessible without pulling the plywood mount out. The plywood is screwed into the top bedrails, it holds up nicely.
@tripperdonnie3 жыл бұрын
@Andy Larson I have a heavy gage blue extension cord that runs from the inverter to the campers AC plug on the passenger side rear corner of the Alaskan, you can see the extension cord running just below the Alaskan door. The inverter supplies 1500 watts of 120V power to the original AC breaker box there (2 x 20 AMP breaker) and that gets distributed thru factory wiring to all the plugs in the camper. All the 12v items run through a non factory 12v fuse box just below the inverter that you can't see.
@neoprotwo3 жыл бұрын
Over 600 Watts of solar on a little Walmart battery!! Show that beast of a system some respect and get a Lithium battery, you could probably run a 200ah battery easily with that setup! Lynac makes some good batterys.

How does the 3/4 ton handle the weight of the camper?
@tripperdonnie3 жыл бұрын
It has air bags (30psi) a 4 wheel leaf springs and does very well, without the camper this truck is WAY to stiff. On my 2003 Duramax even with air bags it feels a bit heavy, but the Duramax has much softer suspension and still drives decent.
