What a special treat for me! I used to live in Laguna Beach and was the Director of an Art Gallery on PCH. I worked weekends, and my reward to myself was heading off at 4pm on Sundays to the San Clemente Pier. Sometimes with friends, sometimes decompressing alone, I watched the surfers and saluted the sunset with a Trestles at Fisherman’s. Thank you for the awesome memories. I now live in the Black Hills of South Dakota, but the beach girl part of me is still there. Thanks for my “fix”!

Having been a professional photographer explains why your videos are so spectacular! You know how to frame a scene for sure. Good idea putting a kneeling pad down when climbing in and out of the truck, it's a must. Thanks for another great post. Cheers.

She's done it. The impossible combination of requirements is actually possible and she has figured it out. The mobility and ability of a pickup, uncompromized by carrying a sheltered standing space, without giving up that utility. The basic conundrum all back country truck campers must stake a decision on is this. Setting ones own balance between getting there at all versus daily living comfort. Standing in an indoor kitchen is a lovely thing when it is blowing sideways outdoors. Getting that, even compromised with fabric, to the outback means there are just places you don't go. Camping in remote spots means you tent or Jeepsleep and hope that rain waits until dinner is cooked. Catherine's magic is she can reset her choice where, when, and as often as she chooses. I'm jealous.

Catherine, flatten your biscuits to about 1/4 to 3/8'' thick, and cook on lower heat. Basically fry bread, and great for biscuits and gravy!!

After 10 years of full-time RV traveling, towing a 23 ft than a 26 ft travel trailer , I am stationary on my own off grid land. After 13 months of stationery, I was getting the travel bug itch. You inspired me to find a used topper and I do now go on trips, usually 4 days 3 nights. I have a 100 watt solar panel and a 100 amp hour AGM battery just a power my devices. Then it's Coleman stove, sleeping bag, and haven't had to use my heater buddy yet. Luckily, I'm close enough to the desert to go down to it to stay in much more moderate temps now that it's winter. Thanks for your inspiration!

Cat, you didn’t fail, you just discovered one way to not make biscuits, lol. Enjoy your channel, your calm manner is great. Just FYI, they used to make small portable propane ovens for camping. My Dad was a propane guy, so we had one. It was infrared too which heat and cook great but uses less fuel.

Absolutely! Good to spend time with family while you can. There are a surprising number of small campgrounds all around southern California - great for short getaways. When my friend from St. George visited she was freaked out by the freeways too. "How does everyone keep from running into each other" she'd say LOL So I told her they do sometimes but luckily not all the time. Our trips in her area often on roads where we'd never see another car so understandable reaction. Second waffle is usually better too LOL. in '63 we talked a H. S teacher to chaperon a surf weekend in San Clemente. We stayed at a motel that was where the little park by the pier is now. My daughter and son in law were married at the Casion. Awesome trip and update!

My journey is similar to yours in a way. I lived in Southern California for 20 years age 13 to 33 going to the ocean Hunting Beach and others on the regular. It was crazy crowded back then so when my son turned 5 we moved to Florida where I lived for 24 years by the Atlantic Ocean. It started getting crowded in Florida too near the end of living there. Moved to Texas for 3 years to be close to my son and Grandkids but very crowded there. Don't do well in big cities or crazy freeway congestion. So come retirement time I thought where would be a place I could enjoy 4 seasons, Mountains, and very small community and so I moved to Montana. I love it here in Red Lodge. Small population, ski resort 7 miles from me, views of Mountains out my window , deer coming up to it, and entrance to the beautiful Beartooth Scenic Hwy. Close to Wyoming border also. Although I am far away from family I do try to visit. I have a sister, nieces, and newfew that lives in San Diego and a sister northern California Santa Maria. They live their lives being where they are happiest and I am too now. Love nature like you and getting to be here where there's abundance is a blessing ❤

Thanks for taking us along on your truck camping outing and filling us in on your surf photography career of the past. The shots of surfers were amazing! I camp a lot too and have done tent and camper camping. Love being in the woods and I enjoy being alone also. I always try to pick a secluded camping spot. I like your no-build truck camper setup. Very efficient and cozy. Maybe oil would work well in the pan for the biscuits. Pancakes looked great. I ate too much for Thanksgiving too!

Hi Cat, I did the same thing the first couple of times I tried to cook biscuits. I’ll tell you what works for me, when you take the biscuit out of the container carefully rip it in half, you just made two biscuits out of one. The thing is they’re thin now so now you can cook them at low heat and they will be done all the way through. I do this a lot to make biscuits and gravy. Trust me, it works. So give it a try.👍

Just discovered your channel tonight Catherine, have watched 3 of your videos, loved them so I am subscribing. I'm an old man, have always loved camping, from a sleeping bag on the ground to very nice travel trailers with all the comforts of a house. I'm recently divorced, sold my house and land and RV and moved far away from "home" for a new life. I have a nice truck and your truck camping has piqued my interest. That would be fun. Sitting around at home alone all the time is very boring. All my family has died and my friends are 1000 miles away since I moved. So I think I need to do like you.

I know exactly what you mean about "too many people" overload. When we returned from a very long trip out west, we flew into the airport close to where we live, I had a panic attack- because going from pure wilderness to absolute airport chaos was terrifying. I prefer to be in the country, away from the cities, away from traffic, to hear the birds sing, that is heaven. I don't know why people love the cities!

Hi Catherine 😊😊 I knew where that place was before you revealed it. I go there frequently for day use, as I have an annual pass. I go to the "Hawk" area a lot, where the corral / windmill is located. At that spot in the park, it is absolutely beautiful, and dead quiet. No traffic noise whatsoever, just the breeze through the trees and the sound of various birds. Sometimes I bring my guitar out there, and just sit and play a bit. Awesome video!

Loved the video because it was about places I am super familiar with since I grew up in Laguna Beach, surfed San Clemente for years, and San Clemente State Beach is one of my favorite campgrounds. I've stopped at Casper on Oretega Highway several times but haven't stayed because they don't allow dogs and I have a little chihuahua. There's a National Forest campground just up the canyon and closer to Lake Elsinore that works. I saw the little single tank Mr Buddy Heater you use. I had to smile because I have the same small one, plus the middle size version, and the larger pro version with 2 tanks, a fan and electric starter. I love them all. I think the best part in the video was the flashbacks of you when you were younger and included a few surf shots. The years I was surfing were probably the best days of my own life, memories forever. Our family surfed a lot. My cousin is Corky Carroll who was in several surf magazine. Great memories.

I'm a big fan of 'charred' foods when camping. Bacon is a prime example of something much better when it is 'over cooked' by the standards of most people. Living in Fl I like having longer days....I remember dark at 5 o'clock 🤔 I used to live in Baltimore....now NO snow and only a few days of early sundowns...12/21 is the shortest day....then they get longer. Have a great week stay safe and keep warm.

My 13-year old daughter has expressed interest in photography as a possible hobby. Do you have any thoughts on how she can get her feet wet? She really doesn't have any experience, not even with a cell phone camera. Perhaps a cell phone would be a good starting point or a basic point-and-shoot camera? If you have a chance, any thoughts you might be able to share would be appreciated - thanks.
