I looked at your oldest videos and was shocked to see your dark hair and then subsequently learned about your hair loss condition. I found your other videos concerning your journey with this hair loss and I can’t help but respect and admire how calm and chill you are about it all. I mean, I’m sure there’s been some element at some point where it might have hurt you or caused you to feel negative about your appearance just like the rest of us with our insecurities…but your demeanor at least in your videos is just so positive, stoic, and easy-going. I really enjoy your ability to go with the flow. I guess it is what it is, but lucky for you, you truly rock the bald look and your glasses add a funky and fun accessory to your face in such a cool way!

I just posted a remark re stress being a trigger. The person I know who has alopecia was going through a stressful period. Another well known personality also developed this condition during a stressful time. I wish this young doctor would check into that possibility....and take or do something about the stressor in his life. Bless him he's a good soul.

As a person with chronic illnesses I find it heartwarming to hear about you, as a doctor, sharing your story with alopecia. I find there feels like such a gap of experience between myself and the doctors/GPs I see because they have never had to experience medical issues that are quite life changing. I have sadly had really negative and sometimes plain ignorant interactions with them, making it hard for me to trust them, and want to reach out when I need help. Thank you for the bravery in sharing your story, you look awesome and I love the care, thought and nuance that you show in your work and reaction videos. Sending lots of good vibes 😊

He’s a handsome guy, good proportions, good bones, But! the eyeglass frames are too dark, too harsh, and make it real hard to find his eyes. Transparent or very light metal frames would provide an illusion of eyebrows with the way the light would subtly play, without hiding or detracting from his eyes. JMHO.

I have male pattern baldness and it started in my 20’s, I tried several treatments for years and even hair integration technique which aggravated my situation and then I came to a point that I decided to shave it when I’m in my mid 30’s, I’m 57 years old now. I still can remember the very day I shaved my head and I have to drown the noises in my head when I was about to enter my workspace. It turned out ok. I do relate and brought back the memories when I saw your video shaving your head in the bathroom. And you rocked that look. And thank you for shedding some light as others will need it on their journey. I know your case is different but I can sense your honesty and that made you even more like-able and relatable. Emotional and psychological sides of hair loss are often severely overlooked by people that are not affected by it, including healthcare professionals. I hope you've had a good support system and was able to fall back on your extensive knowledge on the topic when things were getting rough. I am absolutely sure your patients receive the best and most compassionate care from you, not only because you're a good doctor, but also because you actually have first-hand experience relating to hair and autoimmune issues. I have suffered from both myself, and I'm glad you're sharing your personal experience, providing medical information simultaneously.

Its not just an imune system caused condition, its also a mental journey you have to put up to. Its quite true that people only value this when its happening to them personally. It must be difficult existing in the plastics industry with a visible condition, like alopecia areata, and I’m so sorry that you’ve had that burden placed on you. The fact that you’re being so transparent about it will help more people than you know, and I am in awe of your courage. I truly hope you also find some healing through that process. Additionally, and I hope this translates with the correct intent, I believe it puts you in a unique position to truly understand and empathize, in a way many surgeons can’t, with the needs and concerns of your patients. I’ve had to undergo multiple corrective surgeries following a severe dog attack on my face, and it just so happened that my surgeon had also experienced a facial dog attack the year prior, which perversely helped put me at ease before the initial emergency reconstruction. I’ve found immense healing through transparency about various issues, and more importantly, I’ve connected on a level I never expected with my community. Through sharing your story, you’re helping to remove decades of ignorance that led to unnecessary stigmas about *relatively* common concerns amongst the broader population… on KZbin no less! Kudos to you, sir! You’re a bonafide hero!

Gary, Thank you so much for sharing your alopecia journey. You are giving courage to many in your work for others and in what you share of yourself. Thank you. We have alopecia in our family. So I understand vicariously how frustrating and distressing it can me. For myself I transitioned recently (at Norwood 5 in my mid fifties) to my current configuration of bald plus beard. For me it was one of the most liberating, and confidence-boosting things I have ever done! I remember going into the supermarket the evening of my big chave, and two young guys (hip, style captains) who usually served me in the bottle shop came out from behind their desks to check me out. They were enthusiastic told me, "You rock that look! You looks way younger!" For me as an older guy, testing these strange new waters, it was a great moment. And I want to say that you, Gary, look great both with and without! Thank you again. Health and Peace, Paul

Great video on Alopecia. It’s a very mysterious condition. I developed it in my mid twenties also. Previously asthmatic allergies came up first. Environment and stress factors but I also had swollen lymph’s on one side . I was working such long hours and moving alot at the time so I never had time to address it. When I quit my crazy hour jobs day job/ night job and environment and moved out to the countryside it gradually grew back .

I think you’re totally rocking the bald look 👍🏻 my husband, age 28, has started to get a receding hairline over 11 years ago. Because all four of his older brothers had lost a lot of their hair in their early twenties, he tried to prevent this with a medication he had to take everyday, starting with it when he was 15/16. Maybe his hair took a little bit longer to start to fall off or it wasn’t as rapidly as without it, but you couldn’t really see, that it really worked. So last year, when Covid hit, he decided to try to cut his hair a lot shorter, down to 6mm at the beginning, and now he is also shaving it. And it looks way better than his “longer” hair with the typical bald areas men get. Of course he would love to have all his hair back, sometimes he thinks, that I don’t find him attractive anymore, but for me that never mattered and also, seeing his brother’s hair loss always showed me what probably end up happening to his hair sooner than later. I can’t imagine how shocking it must have been for you, seeing your hair fall out more and more over time, and knowing that something you perform regularly on patients, a hair transplant, wouldn’t be an option for you. I also have an autoimmune disease since 2009. My body attacks my central nervous system and my bones in my lower extremities. So I pretty suddenly went from a healthy, extremely athletic teenager, to a pretty sick, not being able to walk or stand, wheelchair user. And in the beginning it was devastating, but you learn to accept the new challenges and to see the positive, although it sometimes can be quite difficult to find those. I’m sure you feel the same way, because you seem to be a pretty positive guy and you can totally laugh about some of the comments you get.

I started watching his videos because his lack of hair gave him this ethereal beauty, stuck around for the quality of the content. Fiiiiinally found this and have closure. People are often very attached to their hair as a part of their identity / self-expression. I hope he understands how handsome he is, not despite, but because of his condition.

Thankyou Gary. My nephews journey with Alopecia Areata has been very similar to yours. He started to lose his eyebrows when he was around 10. At 17 he was completly hairless; I hadn't seen him for a while and I was shocked, but so proud of his bravery. He had steroid injections which he responded to very well; however in recent months (his now 25) it's all gone again. I'll follow your story and hope you get some results. In the meantime Joe has a girlfriend who loves him for how he is x

I've had this condition for just over a decade. Currently I have hair, but I've had steroid shots for minor lesions. This condition can take a toll on your self esteem, anxiety, and ability to socialize. It hit me during a pretty significant developmental stage. The hair has come back and fallen out randomly. Cudos to you for sharing this and remaining optimistic!

As someone that has been in the hair industry for a very long time, I find this subject so very interesting. I have had clients struggling with hair loss. I have tried to help them navigate through the emotional loss of how they use to look to how they are becoming. I love how you have adapted to the you that you have become. I salute you.

Thank you so very much for sharing your journey. I shaved my head last Fall. My hair hasn't completely fallen out. I have patches here and there that grow v-e-r-y slowly. I don't want to walk around with patches, and was tired of wigs, so I finally got the courage to shave it. Like you, I have almost no eyebrows. But, oddly, my lashes are full. I have no leg or arm hair. All the hair on my body just up and left. I'm a black woman, so I just say I'm one of the Dora Milaje from Wakanda.😀 Enough rambling. Thanks again for sharing. BTW, you have a soothing voice.

Thank you so much Dr. Gary for this video. I am 52 year old female, and lost my hair from the age of 3…..I had the steroid shots around age 5 or so, I did get some growth on the sides for awhile, but never a full head of hair. There were also UV treatments with some concoction that had to be rubbed onto my head prior to having the UV, and I remember they gave me headaches. Over time, I’ve lost my eyebrows eyelashes and body hair. I haven’t sought out treatment for this matter in a long time. I do notice that when I got two trigger point injections (again, steroid) some of my eyelashes came back for a visit but then fall out again. But I’m not confident that any long term steroid use is a good thing. I have accepted this as my life experience and self love has been a hard lesson learned. You are so encouraging and I wish there was more of this 40 years ago! Thanks again!!

I'm so impressed by how calm and accepting you are of your condition. Personally, I think you look very handsome without hair but I know it's not how you're used to seeing yourself so it must take a healthy dose of adjusting to get used to it. But even here, back in 2020, you spoke about it so calmly and objectively. I'm not sure I could have done that. Anyway, I love your videos and your professionalism, and you totally rock the hairless look.

Thank you for coming forward & sharing your experiences! Im also a young male experiencing hair loss, so you sharing this really helps me realize that I'm not the only one & means a lot. I'm still not sure exactly what I'm experiencing. I was born with a small, nickel sized bald spot on my left temple that was always just seen as a birth mark. Then almost a year ago seemingly out of nowhere, i developed a much larger bald spot (about an inch in diameter) right behind the one ive always had kinda behind my left ear. I had long hair & literally ALWAYS wore a beanie & one day I cut my hair low & noticed it then. It's grown maybe 10% in size since then like within the 1st 3 months. I have absolutely no idea where it came from. I have absolutely no other hair loss or thinning. My mom has an auto-immune disease (sarcoidosis) & I feel like I could as well. Still waiting to get a chest x-ray. I did have a crazy homeless guy break a beer bottle over my head not long before I noticed the bald spot, but I didn't even get a scratch from there as the hat & hair (afro) absorbed most of the force. I have heard that trauma can kill hair follicles, though. The only other thing I can think of is the fact that I started going to the gym & working out very aggressively & taking creatine. I'm lost lol. So be glad you actually know what's going on with your hair! Lol.

This was so helpful. My son, who’s 3 started to lose patches of his hair during summer time July 2022. He started swim class then and I thought maybe it was that. We saw pediatric derm and told us he has alopecia areata. He has lost all his hair, eyebrows and lashes in the course of 6 months. His hair completely gone in 4 months or so, lashes and brows within the 2 months. It was fast and it makes me very sad as his mama. They started him on steroid oil, topical but nothing yet. He’s been on it for a month, going on 2. Thank you for this video. You look wonderful without your hair. You are brave!

You're very brave to put out this much needed video. I commend you sir. See, I'm not happy about your autoimmune condition. Not at all. But, I feel that all hair transplant surgeons should have experienced(on any level, even minor) some degree of hair loss. Why? Well, if they personally don't know about the pain that could affect their performance. It's probably insane to feel like this, but it's still how I feel and that's never going to change. Thank you Dr. Linkov.
