I did this experiment in April this year. I now have eight little bulbs.

I am so glad it worked for you. Now the challenge is to grow them to blooming size.

April is in the beginning of the Northern Hemisphere growing season. I suppose for me in South Africa it will be in September or October? I am keen to try this. Your opinion will be valuable on when I should try this. Just bought bulbs that was taken out and couriered to me.

@@altastretton1768 You are correct. Start this project in your spring. I don't think it is too late. If you have a bulb or two to spare you could do a trial run now.

@agreenerview Please help! Two of the bulbs arrived with soft spots. I had cut it away with a sterilised knife and had dusted some cinnamon on. How do I prevent it from destroying the bulb completely. Think my mistake was not ordering in the dormant time. Most do look healthy. Only two had rotten spots.

@@agreenerview Right! It seems these baby bulbs are slow to grow.

Interesting! I don’t plan on propagating my amaryllis that way, but was sure interesting to see how it can be done. Thank you!

Thanks Jeff, I bought 5 bulbs about 15 years ago. I live in Windermere, Florida. I have some in the Garden and others in pots. Some are lifted and others stay planted. Mine bloom in April through June all on their own. If I kept some smaller bulbs (the teenagers) to put in a pot to size up, I will get a bloom or 2 mid-summer. I haven't accurately counted, but I think I have over 100. Not bad for not really trying. But I think I'm going to try your method of division. Fascinating. Thanks for sharing 👍 ❤Peggy❤

Thank you Peggy, Bulbs naturally want to grow pups. Sounds like yours are doing great.

Hi Peggy, fo you grow your hippeastrum entirely indoors and manage to make them bloom?
@agreenerview Жыл бұрын
@@MrDudaro I think her potted amaryllis are outdoors. If given a lot of bright light, good potting soil, and proper watering, they could be grown entirely indoors. They would do better outdoors over the summer. They will still need to go through a dry dormancy period for a few months before they would bloom. They need to mimic the dry mountain environment they naturally grow in.

Where do you store the amaryllis while you wait for it to get sprouts? Can you store it in a covered porch?
@agreenerview Жыл бұрын
I use a closet that is in a cool room and I use a shelf in an attached garage. The temperature can drop down into the 40s and 50s F but should not get colder than that. If left in a warm room they may sprout early and you won't even know they are growing. I leave some in pots and I take some out of the pots. That doesn't seem to matter. I do put the ones out of a pot into a paper bag.

So if I live in the southern half of Florida I should probably keep it inside in the air condition? I don’t have a “cold” room
@agreenerview Жыл бұрын
They don't have to be cold but cool is better than warm. Even though they are dormant, they are respiring. If left in a warm place they will shrivel up and dry out.@@chantalchung9928

Can they stay in dormancy for 6 months?
@agreenerview Жыл бұрын
Hi Vickie, They can stay dormant for a long time but since they are alive, they are consuming carbohydrates and nutrients all the time. As time passes they will consume anything they can to stay alive so the flower bud will die and then leaf after leaf will die until the bulb is dead. If the bulb is strong and healthy going into dormancy it will easily last 3-4 months with no problems. If kept very cool they will last longer. Six months is a long time so only strong bulbs in good conditions will bloom and be healthy at the end.

Cut in top to down. No down to top.
@agreenerview6 ай бұрын
The basal plate tissue that makes up the stem tissue in the bulb is located at the bottom of the bulb. It is where the roots grow down and the leaves grow up. If you cut from the top down, you will only cut leaves and not the stem tissue that must be cut to make this type of propagation work.
