No matter how dark your dad may have been, it does not mean he did not have European ancestors. You cannot tell how African someone is by their skin color.

Tammy Henderson My test came back 95 percent African and my skin is light brown. I was shocked when I got my test. I started watching a lot of KZbin videos where people had 15 to 20 percent European and I was lighter than them. I am only 3 percent European from 3 different regions. I've seen a South African lady on KZbin who was very light come out 100 percent African. They do have indigenous African tribes who have light skin but are not mixed like the koi san people of South Africa and some igbo people from west Africa. I have downloaded my raw DNA to Gedmatch and I do have both Koi San and igbo ancestry.

I have been treated all my life as "not WASP". Most people thought I was Mexican. Their faces and tone of voice would change, weirdly, when I told them my mother was Hawaiian. Like somehow that raised me in their estimation?! Somehow I was a more exotic or "more better" minority? I have never understood that. Meanwhile, most people thought my thin, light-skinned mother was from the Middle East or India?! And she told me she was 3/4 Hawaiian. My Dad is white, with German and UK ancestry. So I was shocked to find my highest ethnicity NOT British Isles or German, but Scandinavian! Something I hadn't even considered. Instead of being 35% Hawaiian, I am only 23%. But it is the race/color/"differentness" that everybody sees. I understand your initial feelings. I don't quite know what to tell people: "Well, actually, throw in my Russian/Finnish ancestry, and you're not looking at a South Seas girl, but a North Sea one." I think the important thing for mixed-race people like you and me is to stick with what you identify as, even if that identity is multi-faceted. I don't fit anywhere; have no posse. I am too white for my Hawaiian cousins and I was raised Mainland. I am too "other ethnic" and "not one of us" for other minority groups, and have no pow-pow, no luau, no dojo, no nothing - nowhere to go and no peers. I am glad you are still embraced by the minority group you most identify with Best wishes to you. Thanks for your courage. BTW, Mom just got back her Ancestry results. I don't show any African, but she had a trace amount of Benin/Togo. Wow.

Why be dismayed about your genes 0? By some stupid legal system imposed by European racists, we are never White unless we're 100% Euro. As if Euro is pure, and all else no matter how little makes one impure. I'm more Euro than Afro (56%)-(40%) yet no immediate 100% White relatives or ancestry. Very mixed people marrying very mixed people for several generations going back into slavery. Some through willing relationships and I'm sure, some not so willing. We're human. I relate to being Black American only because my family shared in the misery suffered by African people enslaved here. I know which side of the family ran away from us, and which side embraced us. But I refuse to accept an absolute racial basis for my existence. I fill out forms by checking several boxes, because that's who I am. And I'm damned proud of it. BTW, my wife is 100% Mandingo from West Africa and has a creamed coffee complexion.

I felt similar to how you felt when I first took my mitochondrial DNA test from Africanancestry. Per Africanancestry, 92% of African Americans have African mitochondrial DNA lineages, but I was of the 2% who had a Native American mitochondrial DNA haplogroup. It shattered me and felt less African, even though my mom always told me our maternal ancestry descended from indigenous women. It took me about 6 months for me to get over this shock. That was nearly two decades ago, and I've embraced my results. However, unlike people who get African maternal results, I don't have a homeland nor an ancestral community I can visit and be embraced 😕.

The reason that your African percentages are smaller and diverse is that your African ancestors have been here from a long way back. So they mixed with each other, all from different parts of Africa and that diluted the mixtures. I am that way with my European ancestry. I have bits of everything, when I thought I was mostly 2 ethnicities.

I don't have any clue who my biological father is or any of his family but I do know that my bio mother was born in Portugal and all her family before her was born there too. The results from these can be very interesting but you know what? The same little girl in you, who told those bully's "I'm African American!!" Was standing up for her right to be proud of the blood that is in her and standing up for her right to be proud to identify with whichever part of herself that she wants to. I hope you let go of some of your baggage about this. You're mostly African, the reason you don't have a large percentage of a specific region is because of the way the slave trade worked. There is a difference between race and ethnicity. For me personally, you can be 0% African but ethnically you can still identify as being black because that's about the culture you grew up in or you adopted as you got older. That doesn't have to do with DNA. But with regards to talking about rape . . . there is no reason to think about it because you don't know what happened. Legally a slave couldn't give consent so almost all sex is ambiguous, even sex between two slaves. I went to a plantation house once and they said the family "breed" all the females to one male slave because for whatever reason most of his children were male and they wanted more male slaves. When he was in his 60s they would put him with 13 year old girls. That is 2 slaves, but that isn't consensual on either side and just because a woman had children with a white man, that doesn't mean she viewed it as rape or was unwilling, no matter if she could legally consent or not. I'm of the opinion that everyone is equally related to good and bad people so I try not to judge my relatives too harshly overall and remember only other slave system to rival the slave system in the US was the slave system of Ancient Rome. So many Europeans have slave ancestors too, and if you want to count serfs who were slaves in everything but name then all Europeans, except for maybe Queen Elizabeth, are also descended from slaves.

This was the most emotional reveal, ever. You seemed so disappointed. I think I grew up, the opposite. I love different cultures, and speak a lot of languages. And I knew I would have a mix. My dad was from the islands. Other people would say I was something exotic, but my immediate family, except my dad, were just like, you're Black, you're Black, stop trying to be something you're not. I'm proud to be Black. But, I always knew, and was also proud of the fact, that there was more to me, than solely, African. My results were similar to yours when I ran my raw DNA results from Ancestry through DNA.Land's system. There, I got 66% African, 31% West Eurasian, 1.4% Ambiguous, and 1.1% Native American, but that Native is from the islands and South America. However, DNA.Land didn't test Ireland or Norway. And Ancestry didn't test, I don't think Colombia, Venezuela, or the island area for Natives. Ancestry didn't find any Italian (Sicilian), Finnish, or Native. So, it all depends on the test, and what populations they used. I am waiting on my results from 23andMe, right now, while also waiting on results from my mom and my uncle on my dad's side, through Ancestry. GEDMatch is another one that has a whole plethora of calculators to test with, again, with your raw DNA results. It's exciting to me, I love it. If I had the money, I would hire a genealogist, because as far as the family tree goes, I'm stuck at my grandfather on my dad's side. I basically, know most of my mom's large family.

You have recent white ancestors, so no surprise on the percentages. Lots of "British" people have freckles including myself. Also, your biggest single African % comes from South-East Africans (Bantus). This was not an area that African slaves bound for the Americas typically came from. Usually, it was the west coast north of the Congo. So you have more in common with Kenyans and Ugandans than Nigerians or Ghanaians. Yes, you are African-American, but you are also a unique individual with your own make-up. Good luck with your genealogy research, particularly the UK branches.

I just want to thank you for making this video as I'm sure others feel the same way with their results but probably wouldn't have the courage to share it. I had a similar experience being multiracial to the point where I felt exactly as you stated, "disjointed". My results were so splintered and even the biggest chunks, which weren't that big (largest was 30%) didn't match what I expected, so, yes, every time I looked at my results, I felt it showed a big question mark: WHO ARE YOU? For most people, their dna clarifies it, and for me, it just created this muddled picture to the point where I can't even make sense for it. And you only got 2 races, mainly, I actually had 5, so imagine that, if you can. What made me feel better over time was processing my dna through other sides (DNA.Land, Gedmatch, WeGene) in addition to Ancestry DNA and 23andMe. My results actually changed, and together, I was able to piece some of the discrencies and most confusing parts, and in my case, my Ancestry DNA result, seems to have been off, so that can also happen. So, I'd say to try other sites and see if some of that divided and subdivided blood can be put together by other sites that have different dna samples. Lastly, your identity is what you make of it. This DNA will feel foreign for a while, but something else that helped me was learning positive things about each region that made up my DNA, as well as thinking back on what parts of these regions/cultures resembled something in my current life, or something I was fond of. In fact, I think this made the biggest difference. Lastly? Seeing videos of mixed people helped too, to see more dna that resembled my own.

Bless you I can see how upset about being British. But let's consider this, the British n slavery....there was also British and Irish that were also slaves through class, so the chances of two persecuted people falling in in love is higher than you probably think, maybe there's a lot of beautiful stories behind your ancestry, research it and embrace it! After it was a white Englishman that fought for the abolishment of of slavery wasn't it, I'm sure they wasn't all monsters. End of day we are all human good or bad black or white. Much love keep us posted about your research if you go through with it x

C Jamayca Brown let's not lie it's known that there was rape and other disgusting things going on at the time. But think of it like this, the British abolished slavery way before everyone else thanks to a great human being who fought for the freedom of those poor people! So you could pray that your ancestors were there if those times. I understand the mind set of the blacks in America and I totally get it! It's sad to see such a divide in a world power even today! In Europe it's worlds away from the USA! There's still racism where ever you go but in the states it's so behind socially! Go look at history and you will see that the lower class British were side by side with slaves and immigrants. Sad but true that the higher classes treat ppl like that not even over colour and still do

Embrace what your DNA revealed who you are. You should not be disappointed. I'm very very dark skinned but have and had many relatives even a full sibling that looks similar to you minus the freckles. We love each other no less. Before I had the ancestry test I had purchased a few African art objects for my home. LOL after the test I realized not one art object was from a part of Africa where my African bloodline comes from nor do I know what their traditional art looks like. I had never thought of where my white forefathers came from but it explained an incident when I had a 2 hour flight layover in Shannon, Ireland. I exited the plane to go into the airport and inexplicably was overcome and compelled to run across all the concrete and I ended up next to a fence and reached down dug my fingers in the ground and triumphantly raised my hand with some dirt. When they asked what the apparent crazy man was doing I could not explain it. Decades ago I was at a movie and in the middle of the movie during a dramatic moment musically they played an Irish lament once again I was inexplicably overcome and sobbed crocodile tears where normally nothing moves me. After DNA testing, well now I know. I got a small piece of Connemara marble and a few pieces of Waterford crystal and I need to research my few pieces of African art I always had a feeling that one piece did not belong in my home and brIngs me no blessing but had ignored the feeling as the piece is beautiful, now I wonder if that piece is made by a historical enemy as I realize the people ancestry identified me as belonging to may actually have moved or were driven from other areas of Africa. Also I have found myself more tolerant, less judgmental and try to look at all sides of an issue. To date I also have not found rape played a part in the mixing of the races in my family tree. Family lore has stories of loving relationships. Looking back now I can see evidence he white forefathers attempted to pass on all they had as an inheritance upon their death to their black children and it took a generation or more before it was all ripped away from them in the 20th century.

Vanita Braxton My African percentage kept me sane. I love hearing I'm 75% African. Love it. Although, I would have felt that way about 85%. I took the test initially to find the truth about who was my dad. I cried that night. I will never know. And since I have let it go; I'm not getting any younger. My older sibling's dad is half German. They would be 60% African and that's wonderful. I'm glad I took the test. Numbers aside, I have not changed; I'm still me.

Whatever I say from this point, is not meant to be rude, nasty or degrading in any way. Your a very beautiful woman, obviously of African origin, but you also have to remember that you have a lot of European within your DNA, there is also the fact that your Gene's play a huge part in your Ethnicity, so, if the European side of your Gene's is more dominant, as far as I see it, you will have lighter skin. I have watched a lot of these video's on KZbin and find them all fascinating. May I ask you why you feel your African side should be more dominant than your European side ? Why do you feel disjointed because your highest DNA result shows you at 25% Europe and not say 75% or above African ? Your still the same wonderful person, whatever your skin colour. It stands to reason that every single person on this planet is a huge mix of DNA/Gene's, I have not yet come across a person of colour who is 100% complete African in all the video's I have watched on here. The mix of skin colour of people of African origin is very mixed from Very light brown to almost Black or very black in a few cases on here. All these bits of DNA that have been given to all of us through the generations, make us who we are today, we are not what we think WE should be in most cases. This may be easy for me to say, but at the end of the day, each and every one of us should embrace who we are, we cannot change something because we may not like it, specially something as complex as DNA and Gene's, they are a part of us and for that reason, each of us should celebrate our own individuality.

My guess from watching programs such as "WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE", it sounds as though you need to research your family tree, as that would give you a lot more answers to your questions or thoughts. I sincerely hope that you find the answers your looking for. Good luck with your research and take care. it would be nice to hopefully hear how you have got along with your search, but that is up to you if you decide to put more information on here or not. I do not need anything else to hinder me. I can deal with a little of this and a little of that, but, please let me see my portion(s) of Africa. I can imagine that preparing to open my ancestry DNA results is comparable to getting ready to walk down the aisle to join my groom. My mind is electrified with nervousness, a bit of fear, and an abundance of joy! I don't need anything to get in between me and those points in Africa. I am about to be reunited with the motherland. I am doing this for my parents generation and the rest on the line all the way back to my first captured ancestors. I have mixed emotions as I listen to that imaginary drumroll. I plan to get DNA tested. I keep putting it off, but I don't know why.

vegetarian_life and bubbles That makes sense as Italians that came over to America (especially in the south) back in the day were considered "colored" and were sometimes even labeled "black" on the census forms (same with many latinos). Italians were only allowed to marry other Italians, Latinos and black people so I'm sure there was a lot of marrying going on between those 3 ethnicities back then. (Strange (sad) fact: the biggest lynching in American history was done to a group of Italian men who were accused of killing a white police officer in Louisiana). Anyway, you should get your DNA test done. Being from Louisiana you probably have all kinds of mixing going on in your blood.

Not sure why you are shocked? I have cousins and my aunt (my dad's sister) that look similar to you, same for my grandma (my dad's mom). They are from my dad's side. African American/Creoles. They were originally from Mississippi and Louisiana. Before moving out west to California and northern cities like Chicago, IL. My grandpa (my dad's dad) was dark skin. On my dad's mom's side (my grandma) .....was very mixed, mulattos, medium to light skinned, etc. Her father was a white Frenchman (my great grandfather).. Anyways, to the point. Many Creoles from the south USA and the Caribbeans are pretty mixed. I came out 28% African on this test, all from my father's side. So assuming that my father takes this test, he'd be around 50s% - 60%s African (depending on DNA recombination). If you were to have a child with a non-Afrodescendant person, that child would have similar African %s as me 20s % - 30s% (again, depending on DNA recombination) . There are many biracials that are in that range for African, because their black parent is heavily admixed themselves. I get about 20% European (mostly French and Iberian/Spanish) and 2% Native American. These coming from my dad, too. My other half is East Asian (37%) and Polynesian (13%) , adding up to 50%. Coming from my Taiwanese mother. Good video and cool results!

NaturallyFreckled. I am African American, but what I have found out is America is one of the few countries that considers you Black (racially) if you look White. The one drop rule made you Black in America in many states, but biologically that doesn't make sense. It was done for social, political and economic reasons. The one drop rule was designed to assure a continuous source of enslaved people and to maintain power. You look mixed and anyone with common sense will recognize that. Most of us African Americans have a mixture in us to some degree or another so we are not pure Black racially; however, our Ethnicity is African American. Even if you had an African country with a large percentage, it wouldn't make much of a difference because the African cultures are extremely different than ours even though we did bring some of our culture with us to America and it is reflected in many things. It is good to know where we come from, but our culture is really American more so than anything else. Now what your friends might also see in you are characteristics that are more European. If you have European genes, your oral palette may be different so you may pronounce things differently. You may not have an African sense of rhythm. You may prefer melody over rhythm. There may be a lot of things about you that seem more European. If that is the case, you now know the reason. Embrace it. Be yourself and don't be disappointed because you can't find a larger African Ethnicity in your ancestry. It won't make you any different. You are who you are.

What people don't understand is that a disconnect is the only natural way to feel when that other part of your DNA has had NO PLACE in your life until that moment. However i dont want this to sound mean but ive been watching alot of these videos and you know no one wants to click a boring video and so to be totally honest when i saw yours i clicked and my first thought was she will have a high rate of european never did i imagine it would be dominant because you still look black. it does make me think of my Aunt who is much brighter than you are and my grandmother both so makes it even scarier for me. but i have to know about my Grandmothers history she is said to be mixed with Indian but i've said every since i was a little girl that thy say she was indian but she looks like shes mixed with white. And because i've seen so many light skin women with 80-100 percent african ancestry on so many videos, I didn't even register your light skin, and didn't even notice your freckles until I read a comment about it. Darling, if you're that discomforted by your ancestry report, find and hire a professional ancestry tracer, (sorry, don't know what they call themselves, geneologist, maybe?,) and let them track down your relatives based on what you can tell them and show them from your known records. They will likely be able to better explain what your ancestry report means and they might be able to "fill in the blanks" for what your report does NOT show. Now, you are a black woman. You identify with that. You identify your mother and father both as black. So, there you are for YOUR identity. Black American with African ancestry from the west coastal region and the southeastern region. Yes, you have some western European ancestry and we don't have to say how that got there--you know or you suspect. You can't do anything about that ancestry anyway, so don't worry about it. Can't be helped and you aren't responsible for what it is or how it got there. You ARE who YOU define yourself to be, and you have already done that. Rejoice, and go from there. You know more NOW than you did last year about who you are and where you came from.

No one ever accuses Chinese or Indian people of being anti-European when they celebrate their heritage, so why do people do the same thing with Black people in the States? Why would we celebrate the darkest part of our history like it was the happiest time of our lives???? You really should examine your thoughts and words for a minute! I mean really think about it from our perspective for a change! 😒

You are a beautiful looking lady. You know even though your British % is the highest the combined African % is still higher. It's just that your African ancestors settled down in different regions and there was a lot of mingling and marriages within the different groups. They are all still black nonetheless. Your British is the highest because there was very little mingling with other ethnicities with your British ancestors and they do not have different categories of British territories in comparison to Africa.

Ur reaction reminds me of my husband, we are not even allowed to discuss his results, I am 87 percent african, I am light and have freckles and people would assume I am less african, like my husband, he thinks, i should redo it. I am so proud to be Nigerian 32 percent, I am working on finding out what tribe I would belong to.

The good news is you can trace your family on Ancestry. Why are you ashamed to be so much European? You are very pretty and smart.

it really isn't so surprising that the single largest genetic contribution from someone of mixed African and European background is British. During the period of slavery, slaves from diverse African backgrounds mixed with each other, as well as with white Americans, who were overwhelmingly of British heritage. Basically the many smaller groups of African ancestors, who together account for the majority of your DNA, mixed with mostly one group of European ancestors I guess the your reaction might be considered illustrative of the powerful legacy slavery has left our country.

If you have two ancestors who are mixed, it just could be that you get more of the European DNA from them than African. It doesn't necessarily mean that you have more white ancestors than you thought you did. Watching a video on how DNA is passed down would probably help you understand it better. Ancestry does have a video on it. They have an entire playlist on DNA also. Genetic inheritance is really random.

Don't be upset thy you have a large amount of European. Be proud that you have such a diverse background and such a rich history of both African and European. Not many people have such a diverse background and at least you have Irish 🍀 in you. Having British back ground is similar to having Irish because the DNA is so similar so a lot of your Irish DNA could have been mistaken for British. Plus don't forget Northern Ireland is apart of Britain as well as Scotland where you could have gotten the freckles from.

girl youre still black. and most dna tests dont show exact percentage results. if you have a sibling, their british percentage might be non existent or even higher. dna is a game of chance. you might have actually had two european ancestors, and it just so happens that when you were created in your mother's womb, your european dna was a lot more prominent. regardless, youre 70% african so youre an african-american. dont feel disheartened and start questioning your existence. it is ok!

Sis. STOP IT! YOU ARE NOT BROKEN! YOU ARE NOT LESS THAN FOR ANY REASON! You are the divine expression of god's love and greatness and everything that it took to make you you was ordained by god. All our African ancestors were not saints and all our European ancestors were not devils. They were all just HUMAN. That's all we are HUMAN. We don't get any super powers because we got this heritage or that heritage and we certainly don't get any special gifts if we have more of this or less of that. These ideas were created by the warped minds of a class of elites whose fortunes rested on the backs colonialism, slave owners ry and the exploitation of the poor back in Europe. That's who created all these ideas about race and color and that these things influence our being in some fundamental ways. Divest yourself of these lies and realize that in your genes you carry the evidence of god's truth. We are all one race and one big extended family. Cats and goats can't have kids. So those European and those Africans were all really of the same tribe, HUMAN! Is your heart right? Is your mind right? Are you working on yourself to be the best person you can be? I have a hunch you are, so my sister, I want you to love and accept every inch of yourself and know that you are surrounded by love this morning.

We are all the human family,, one love. Out of Africa is all our story, but at different times and with subtle changes to our looks and nature. I'm 5% British which was an out-of-rhe-blue thing too! I know you're in between in your mind now but you are who you are as a person, that's what really counts. And you are beautiful just the way you are.

Due to the way genetics work women who take DNA test are only getting results on of half of their total ancestry, their maternal ancestry. Men taking these test get analysis from both their maternal AND paternal sides. To get a more complete analysis you would need a test from your father. Unfortunately you mentioned that he has passed on. If you have a brother that could be tested that would be your best secondary option for a paternal genetic search to complete your total ancestry analysis.

If you have that much South Eastern bantu ancestors, I bet your ancestors came from Madagascar. The slave voyages rosters, list quite a few ships from there that went to New York, Mass, Maryland and Rhode island. I was shocked. Here, I will give you a link. P.S. My dna results came back with similar results, only the highest percentage was something called "Basque". I know how you feel. www.slavevoyages.org/voyage/search

63% African and you're complaining...girl get a grip. You don't have to have a large chunk from one Area. Europeans took Africans from many countries and when we got to where we were going we mixed. So, to have a bit here or there in normal.
