Not only was slavery an established institution in West Africa before European traders arrived, but Africans were also involved in a trans-Saharan trade in slaves along these routes. African rulers and merchants were thus able to tap into pre-existing methods and networks of enslavement to supply European demand for slaves. Enslavement was most often a byproduct of local warfare, kidnapping, or the manipulation of religious and judicial institutions. Cool! I am igbo and we Africans vary in skin color and physical traits. Also, realize that percentages can be skewed because you only receive 50 % DNA from each parent. This means that a sibling or other relative's results can differ substantially.

Melody on the Move Melody, Creole is not a race, it's a lineage and culture (by lineage it just means you descend from colonial Louisiana settlers, regardless of race) I'm from Louisiana and there are white Creoles and black Creoles. White Creoles are only European and are French and Spanish and black Creoles are the black and French type you describe (sometimes they also have Spanish and Amerind also). Didn't know if you knew.

Hi, you are a pretty lady! Lovely personality, too. What is your Southeastern Bantu %? That is where the Ethiopian will get picked on AncestryDNA. Melanesia is a Polynesian country. Could be Native American mix who knows? (Asians and Native Americans are closely related). I'm blasian. Biracial. African American/Creole on my father's side. Asian (Taiwanese) on my mother's side. On 23andMe test I get 27% African (pretty much all West African) 21 % European (mainly French, Iberian/Spanish) 2% Native American 48.5% Southeast Asian 1.5% East Asian (Chinese). Loved your video!

Did you know that, white settlers in South Africa took slaves from Western/Central countries to work the fields in SA? The 'original' peoples of SA are the 'Khoisan' people. But because of the influx of slaves from other parts of the African continent, there is a huge population of peoples from Bantu language groups, from Western/Central Africa. So it's not impossible for you to share a lot of DNA with peoples from Bantu people in SA. The passing on of genes isn't absolute. Some genes don't get passed down to you, simply because we all have SO many ancestors! I have seen people with deep dark skin doing the test and seeing like over 30% european and when they look at their genealogy they only see black people in their families and hardly any whites! But that's just because every black person with that trace amount of european, passed it on to the next generation but not every individual will get the same amount of a certain type of DNA. It's a bit of pot luck. The test is really effective for matching living people with eachother. The ancestry thing is a 'gimmick' it gives you an approximation of where some of your ancestors might have come from, based on their database of collected DNA. Which is veeeery little and not significant. all ancestry companies are obligated to put up a disclaimer that the test determines yiur ancestry with less than 1% accuracy. The results say very little about you but, it is still fun to see where a portion of your genes might have come from and how these genes migrated throughout history. That same information you can also get from history books. But the test is fun and interesting for many other reasons: I saw a vid of Mayim Bialik and she did this walkthrough of how her genes travelled from 180.000 years ago, east Africa to present day America. The tests are for fun: they don't determine who you are or where you came from.

Other than west central Africa slaves were brought over to the west from Mozambique in small numbers. But the Bantu who populate South Africa also populate central Africa where majority slaves came from Congo/Angola area.

I’m half Irish. The Irish never owned slaves. They were mainly from Great Britain. When the Irish immigrated to America the British were none to happy. We did not have to go through the horrible things your ancestors went through, however they treated our ancestors as a diease. I really happy that you are happy with your results.

My Great Great (I think its 2nd Great) Grandmother is black and married my Great Great Grandfather in WV and they had a bunch of children , there was love between BW and WM and marriage . Congratulations on your Ancestry Results ! My grandmother on my mom's side told me about it when I was a kids , she said people thought she (my GG Grandmother) was Indian , but she was black . I’m curious, this looks like you gave us the overview but do the results get more specific than saying Ghana, or Nigeria etc? Because the time that your ancestors would have been in those regions, those countries didn’t exist. Then deeper than that, to use the example of Nigeria, there’s a difference between being Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba, culturally but also these groups look different. Also, one final question, someone told me that when you use these DNA services that the company actually keeps your DNA profile on record, indefinitely, do you know if that’s true?

The MAJOR slave transporters were the Portuguese who took them to Brazil. The slave trade to Brazil lasted considerably longer than the slave trade to the Americas. Slaves takn to North America were a comparatively small percentage, with far far more going to South and Central America and the West Indies. The Dutch and Spanish were also involved in the slave trade. It also needs to be understood that the saves were not CAPTURED by gangs of Europeans. . They were captured by other Africans, then imprisoned near the harbours, on the west coast of Africa, and sold to the European traders.

I've always been skeptical about the ancestry database. idkw. but I am. you can also do your family history through genealogy. I have a client that studies genealogy and traced her family lineage all the way to Europe.

The database is not a direct representation of your actual genetic ancestry more like which populations carry those genes today and have submitted their info to the database. East Africa is a perfect example as the northern regions have gone through an almost 50% population replacement within the last 28,000 years and thus if your ancestry test pulls up east African your actual ancestry may well be from the middle east.

I bet you wouldn't have a problem with a paternity test! 😂 That aside, this gives people(ESPECIALLY descendants of slaves) the ability to find their identities and that is empowering and liberating. That is MASSIVE. And it's MUCH more reliable than a family's guesses, assumptions, or memories. The history of the slave was obviously wiped out, so the trail is very short for most African Americans for instance. Science is OBJECTIVE so, I would place more confidence in it.

If you get an African DNA result of 100% Cameroon that does not mean your ancestors originate in Cameroon, it just means that in their database TODAY 100% of their samples carry your same markers. Or on other words you come from a population that lives in Cameroon today.

So from the time of the end of slavery, there has been interracial relationships since then. 152 yrs since the end of Slavery that there have existed Interracial relationships. I'm only 19% European, but that's a significant amount when taking in account the last time I had a European ancestor which was about 1850 something.

31% is too high to come from slavery. That means that you're mom was likely 60%+ European and one of her parents was full blown European. This means that you have a full blooded European ancestor born well after 1900. So it's quite possible that it was a love story after all.

Thank you for saying this. I spoke with a geneticist and she told me the same thing. People whose ancestors come from a master slave relationship have less than 12.5% European in them today if they married only people of color. Slavery ended in 1865 over a 154 years ago! That is six or seven generations ago or one's great-great-great-grandmother! For people born after 1940 and have more than 15% European in them, this means that the mix is more or less in one's immediate family (parent or grandparent). Gens do not divide into equal parts: 50%, 25%, 12.5% and 6.25, etc. They are somewhat off with a person of biracial descent being 54% European and 46% African/Black. African Americans have the problem where a person who is 25% W/75%B marries someone who is 12.5%W/87.50B! This combination can have multiple outcomes. Do this over several generations, then you can indeed get a 33/67 split like the one above. People should also be aware that the category of North African is in principle it's own racial group, but is often put with Africa as to not cause confusion. In my case I got a 20% W/77B/3% Other split. I was told by the geneticist that with such a large percentage that my grandmother was most likely white and my mother biracial. I am 53 years old, my biological mother was 16 when she had me, placing my grandmother's birth shortly after WWI! WWI is 50 years after slavery. Thus, my question to my biological nanna is what was she doing at the Cotton Club or during the roaring 20s! For millennials, you are eight times more likely to be a product of an interracial union which was not one of rape. Over the last 60 years, there has been a ten fold increase of interracial children being born! As much as people want to be made at white folks for raping enslaved black women, this idea is starting to be misleading as black men are eight times more likely to marry across the color line as black women. The better question should be is, "Nanna what were did you come from and who was great-grandma?!"

The result would be that your GRANDMOTHER OR GRANDFATHER would be white or your parents bother had a racial mixture of at least 25% or more! That is your great grandparent was white, making him or her born at the end of WWI or WWII--not the Civil War! This means it is time to let these slave narratives go and ask ourselves what our grandparents and great-grandparents were actually doing!

Those eyes you have don't only exist in Asia (though mostly) but they also often appear in Africa, particularly Khoisan people. They actually also appear in Europe (particularly northern Europe) and variants of 'Asian' eyes also in Western Europe. It's just that East-Asian people with eyes like that are more seen in the media so people associate those eyes with Asians. By the way, Irish and British people are very mixed with each other too (they're like, right next to each other) so the majority of your 'Irish' is probably your British.

I love this as a tool to see that everyone is honestly the same. There is no homogenous ethnic group out there and it's a beautiful thing! I think what people may fail to recognize though is that in cases of like, Africa or SE Asia, these nations mentioned would be more for the relative location because your tie to that region may not have existed as a nation at all yet! And my only hope is that people don't start using this as "oh but my DNA test said I'm 2% asian so I'm not racist and I can therefore represent asian culture."

The Khoi-San people of Southern Africa have Asia features, rather Asian have Khoi-San features based on the “out of Africa” theory. So one can have features that are common in Asia and not have Asian ancestry, as those features though prevalent in some Asia countries, are not exclusive to those populations. No feature is exclusive to any ethnic group, some features however are common and/or rare to certain groups, Melody Alisa.

Khoi-San are considered to be similar to the earliest humans. Yes, they have high check bones and somewhat "Asian" eyes. Mandela was partly Khoi-San, you can see it photos.

Take a 23andMe test, too. My Asian or Native American didn't show up on Ancestry, either. I did get West Asian, mine was Caucasus, buy my mom got Asia Central, and West Asian, on Ancestry. Then, on 23andMe, I got Southeast and East Asian. I was just like you, because I thought I would have some too, because of my features. I think the Asian is related to the fact that my mom shows up about 14% Eastern European, Slavic, Balkan, Finnish, and Siberian, on GEDMatch and DNA.Land. I got Finnish, Eastern, and Balkan. So, the Asian is related to that and the Native American. On my dad's side... I'm half West Indian, though. Lol.

Ethiopia was not involved in the transatlantic slave trade so u won't see it from that side. If u have that genetic pool it might be do to some pre-Atlantic slave trade events in the African continent
