it is because a fire ant colony only accepts 1 queen

It's pretty common for Fire ant colonies to have multiple queens

It depends on the species, some species of fire ants like solenopsis geminata are known to be polygynous

Less productive or was not fertile are the most probable reasons. The telling fact will be when they are down to the last queen. Will they keep her alive or kill her also.
@Antsusa3773 ай бұрын
They would not kill the last queen

@@Antsusa377 Oh yes they some times do. For no other reason than they are in kill mode after the first 5 they put down. Takes a bit for all of them to realize this is the last queen.... Some times they self exterminate as a colony this way. I hope not but they are able to do it.

I grew my largest Lasius Niger colony this way, they started with 4 queens, and now almost a year later, there is only 1 queen.
