Hi, I’m Patrick. I’m a freelance science writer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training and a master’s in clinical exercise physiology. I used to work in the clinical setting as a certified athletic trainer, physical therapy aide, and a certified strength and conditioning specialist. I just found your channel a few days ago. I'm teaching high school Anatomy for the first time and your videos are saving my life! My students love you already. My B.S. is in Kinesiology. I worked as a personal trainer all through college which was awesome and made what I was studying so practical in my daily life. I took every opportunity to build my experience and took on all the most challenging clients other trainers wouldn't or couldn't handle. I specialized in working with special populations, injury prevention, and rehab. Did that for 12 years and loved it. Looking back I should have gone more the clinical/therapy rout had I known more about all my options back then. Fast forward some years (I have three kids now and I currently teach Art) and it's been a good while since I've had to study or use more in-depth Anatomy & Physiology. When the opportunity to take on the Anatomy class at my school was presented to me I said yes and then started to freak out. lol. But you are making my life much easier! Thank you, thank you!... I'm studying medicine in my third best language, so the language thing really hit home. In Sweden your colleagues were called "sjukgymnast" (sick-gymnast) before but I think they changed it to the equivalent of "physical therapist" last year.

I’m currently working at a chemist been a pharmacist assistant for 2 months and just finishing my year 12 I’m currently on break with the year 12 studies picking it back up in March as my semester finished some weeks ago just to throw more insight into it I had anxiety issues and was homeschooled for years I’m now 21 sorting myself out feeling better but when I’m finished completing my year 12 I’m going into sports medicine it’s something I’ve always wanted to do medicine as a whole has always fascinated me for a while I wasn’t sure what career but since I love watching sport why not put both of them together sports medicine so that’s my dream to be a sports medicine physician that’s how I found your video/channel can say I’ve taken out a lot of positives from watching this video of yours very encouraging I appreciate it 😊

In Canada, Athletic Therapy is not the same as Physiotherapy, ATs are still newer and not as well regulated or defined in how they fit into the health care system. Their scope is a smaller subset of the scope of practice for a physiotherapist. ATs have a similar scope of practice to registered kinesiologists and certified exercise physiologists, but they don’t have a unified governing and regulating body.

I want to be an Athletic Trainer, do you recommend taking any AP classes in High school, if so which ones?

If you can take anatomy and physiology as a high school student, for sure do that! Otherwise, there aren't many class-specific advantages. Even a hard science class like AP Biology won't be a huge advantage for AT since so much of the major is in getting clinical experience. The Krebs cycle doesn't matter when it comes to learning emergency management, ya know? I passed a handful of AP classes just to reduce how many GE classes I'd take in college (Spanish, US history, English, enviro sci). Having less classes and more time helped ease my workload a bit, since those clinical rotations were so demanding.

Also, (not saying you shouldn't take any AP classes), but I know tons of people who are majoring in AT without having any AP / honors classes from high school at my university. I wouldn't stress it too much.

Totally. Reach out to different clinicians in sports med and ask if you can shadow them. Get experience in the field to figure out what kind of job you'd like to do on the day to day.

I have my BS.c sport management undergrad degree! Currently I am doing my masters in MS.c coaching science in sport. I really want to do a PH.D around sport medicine. Do you think it’s possible? Or do you have any suggestions on a PhD around sport? I am living in Ireland, Dublin too.

That's a great question. There are certainly PhDs in athletic training, but the biggest advantage of a PhD is the ability to do research and teach at that level. If you want to be a researcher, do it. If you want to do something clinical or in hospital, consider a different program. I got my MS in exercise physiology and it was a great way to explore the more academic side of sport science.

1) I feel like European high education is much more rigid than in the US! I got my Master's degree in pharmacy and our elective courses were something like ''Pharmacy informatics'', ''Physical chemistry methods in biomedical research'', ''Spectroscopic identification of organic compounds'', ''Pharmacoeconomics''. Nothing as cool as ''Conflict mediation''! 2) If it's not to personal of a question how much did tuition cost to get your B.S. in Athletic training? You don't have to be specific, mid 5 digits $, high 5 digits $? I hope it's not 6 digits! I heard all kinds of stories from my America acquaintances! I'm from Croatia and tuition for collage is basically free as long as you complete semesters on time. At least in medical and pharma field. There is a huge surplus of Economy and Law degrees and some of them have to pay maybe up to 1000$ tuition per year. I even got full scholarship from Croatian government for my PhD in Vienna with only requirement being I have to work in Croatia for 5 years after graduation. 3) 9:45 You should've said that! Now I want to know!!

1) Awesome, thanks for sharing. As someone in education, I always love hearing how other countries do education. I would've loved to take more specific, in-depth classes like that Then again, my non-degree classes like conflict mediation or Spanish have all been useful in ways I didn't predict at the time. 2) I'm open to it. I think talking about money decreases the taboo. In 2007 when I applied to universities, the public schools in my state cost $21,000/year (much more expensive now), while the private school I chose was $45,000/year. After all my scholarships, awards, and RA work though, my final 4 year debt was $72,000. I'm jealous of your system -- how do other Crotians feel about it? 3) Someday.

@@Corporis After some stories I've heard $72000 sounds manageable! We live in totally different systems! I know ''free'' education and ''free'' healthcare aren't free, it's all payed with our taxes but I feel it's a lot more fair. My friend from Philadelphia had an appendectomy and his insurance only payed about one third of the bill. He ended up paying just under $19000 for an appendectomy!! One of the most basic surgical procedures!! After my appendectomy I walked out of the hospital with $0 bill and 3 week of payed (75% of my salary) sick leave. With my higher education I was able to get a higher paying job and that means a higher tax bracket. Will I pay more than $72000 during my time in the work force? Quit probably, but I still have more than enough for a comfortable life in upper-middle class by Croatian standards and did not start my adult life with debt. And the craziest part of it all to me is that in average citizens of the EU pay 15% more taxes than in the US.

Strictly speaking, you do not have a sports medicine degree... as far as I know, the only true sports medicine degree in the US is from University of Western States - which I find extremely odd considering how popular sports are in the US. In the UK, generally people who run out on the fields for injuries or medical attention are physiotherapists (doctors sometimes, rarely sports therapists), but in the states you would call them physical therapists - they are synonymous with each other. To my knowledge there is no allied health profession in the UK called athletic trainer, the closest thing we have to an athletic trainer are `sports therapists` who have to undertake a 3 year BSc (hons) in sports therapy; however they are not yet considered allied health professionals by the HCPC in the UK and thus "sports therapist" is not a protected title in the UK at the present time, though they have been trying to get on the HCPC register for years.

Man, hearing about your nutrition experience is disappointing, because registered dietitians don’t use those tools. As a practicing RDN with an MS in Nutrition and Dietetics, I regularly push patients with injuries that protein/energy intake is not enough, they have to put in the work to heal. I had hoped that sports medicine received better nutrition info than I got for exercise and movement. Dang.

I agree with you loud and clear. The gap between good and bad nutrition education can be large, and I feel like mine was pretty poor. From your perspective, what does good nutrition education look like?

@@Corporis Good question. Generally, macronutrient (energy, protein, water) recommendations are a range, based on the pt’s actual or ideal body weight (depending on status). I think that would be useful for sports meds to know. I wouldn’t worry about micronutrients. Even doctors tell me they feel over their head about those, and send one of us in instead. I think the most frustrating part of all is that you seem to have had someone who either didn’t know what they were talking about, or didn’t care, and every student deserves a teacher that is knowledgeable and cares.
