I've probably spent more time staring at the world map than I have the opposite sex, but how well would I fare if you asked me to draw the outline of a relatively obscure country such as Ecuador or Gabon? well, the results are in, and they're mixed..

WorLdle has a mode where countries are turned in a random direction, and also a mode where there is no picture at all (so you have to guess country by its proximity to other guessed countries). Much more fun. There is also Globle, which is where you keep guessing countries, and the closer the correct country is, the more it turns red.

This little game Tom is playing with himself is excellent in highlighting the differences of *RECOGNITION vs. RECALL,* and how easy the former is compared to the latter. Edit: Tom even acknowledges this at the end, but fret not Mr. Davies, this is not just your brain working strangely, but all of ours as well.

It very neatly outlines why reading over your textbook or your notes is far less effective than doing practice problems as a study method. When you read something over you think you understand it when really you recognise it, whereas forcing yourself to recall it doing practice means you’re more effective at recall on the exam.
@RoseJetExhaust

I feel like recognition is potentially the more useful skill in the age of Google? I often know that I know things but can't think of them until I've spent 5 seconds googling it vs. spending probably a lot longer memorising thoroughly
@RoseJetExhaust
@RoseJetExhaust 2 жыл бұрын
@@Emmet_Moore True, many things are not really that important to know right off the top of your head without e.g. Google. However this is debatable and I think that not everyone would agree with you. Especially with things and topics that might benefit you in your personal life, really knowing things (recall) is probably better. But I agree that there are many superfluous things we are taught, whereas boomers would disagree along the lines of "eh but we had to learn all this in school and it did not hurt me".

If I have to find a hotel in a new city I always draw a basic map on a small paper and put it in my wallet. Once I've done that I often don't need to look at it because the drawing process puts it into my brain. Also this is highly useful if my phone run out of battery/credit at a crucial moment.

Try Globle! It is a Wordle inspiration game. It is Worldle without the outline, but you guess on a Globe. When you guess, the darker the color (dark red being the darkest) and green being the correct. The farther you are from the mystery country, the wighter the colour. Try it on your next video! I really enjoyed this video! Keep up the great work.👍

You should consider turning on territories next, as territories are also on Worldle, not just countries. It makes the whole thing a lot harder, as your repertoir increases significantly and they have you guessing places you've never seen before.

For Equatorial Guinea - yeah, that island is, indeed, weirdly far north to the mainland area - but maybe even more interesting is the tiny volcanic islet called Annobondown south - it's even futher away from mainland Eq. Guinea - and, more interstingly, that little piece of rock is the only "land" territory of Equatorial Guinea the equator actually passes through.

The way you gave yourself 5 for that Gabon thing (which has equatorial Guinea as a neighbor which you had minutes before) and then only 4 for Somalia is beyond me 😂 No hating, I would be way worse, but Gabon was wrong on so many levels, just drawing a kind of circle is not 5 Tom :D Let's be honest and compare it to the equatorial Guinea round both 5 points. There you got 3 boarder right, they are just straight and you knew it has an island to the top side. The coastline not so much. That was a very good 5. But Gabon not the coastline, no inland boarder really, the before mentioned neighbor Guinea cuts a rectangle out of it top left. I guess you knew it had no island? :D However I absolutely love the format, it's so engaging, otherwise I wouldn't have written this comment ig, great video!

Here's an idea for a video: a combination of the 'worldle' format and the drawing countries from memory; and would require collaboration with someone you know, perhaps one of the ones you mention if they are up for it? So the other person gets a randomly generated country, has to draw it from memory, then the other person has to identify the country just from the drawing. Could be done 'live' or the drawing part done beforehand, and either way then pass it across to your editing guy to deal with the carnage! Obviously you could then flip it and do it the other way around.
