As a hint for next time Tom, the map specifically chooses places that don't have Google Street view. So your time debating the likes of Brazil, Portugal, Australia etc is wasted as they're never going to be on the map! Automatically think to obscure, it'll help a lot with narrowing down. The search in Portugal and Brazil was wasted

Streetsigns also tells it can´t be Brasil, it had to be some colony still under some kind of Portuguese rule, but still not a part of Portugal because of the license plates. However, the important part is that fit chick in the turqouise top. I would add three minutes to the round because of her ;P

I recognised Timgad because a couple of years ago I was looking at World Heritage sites in Algeria, which Timgad is. I remembered the lone arch surrounded by rubble and columns as being pretty distinct for Timgad. I didn't remember exactly where in Algeria the city is but I was able to find it pretty quickly on the map. It turns out that reading through random lists of things online can have real benefits!

Obscure countries according to Tom: Portugal, Australia, Canada, Brazil. I guess some could be called that because of remote areas that they have, but not really compared to Cape Verde, they are rather known.

Tbf to Tom, the signs in Cabo Verde are exactly the same as in Portugal (which I also wasn't aware) and obviously it's the same language. The plates and the houses didn't look like anything you see in Portugal but just based on the signs it would be worth it to check out Portugal, mainly the islands as some might find them obscure. It got me confused as a native so I'm really not surprised Tom played it this way

I like using cars as a reference, we never had those Land Cruisers in Brasil, also black license plates, can't be Brasil or Portugal. Straight away i've thought of Cabo Verde, and it had a very island ish feel, so i ruled out Angola and Moçambique. The second Cabo Verde tho, picked the Aral Sea lol, looked like one of the non dried out locations.

I guessed a roman temple in Lebanon, which once was a French Colony and is pretty arid as well. So there are certainly options, even if you find all the clues.

I got 16,008 points, so pretty close to yours! First round: I was thinking "this looks extremely Roman/Greek, but also Northern African, so it's probably somewhere near where Carthage used to be", but for some reason I then went to Egypt, thinking it has also been Roman at some point, instead of sticking to Carthage... Second round: Praia is the capital of Cape Verde, so I kinda just went with that, even though I couldn't see any of the names I saw on the signs. I didn't realise Praia was just Portuguese for Beach (I suppose), so getting the right country and only being 150 km away was a real lucky strike xD Third round: "This could be anywh-... anywhere in Kabul, Afghanistan. I zoomed in on the embassy of Pakistan, since the building was gifted by Pakistan. I stumbled upon the Kabul University, and when I couldn't find the faculty of Arts, I just plopped the marker down somewhere. Wrong building, but still over 4900 points. Fourth round: Saw it was Iran on the number plates, didn't have patience to find a place I would probably not be able to find and put the marker in the center of Teheran. Was 4.2 km away. Not bad xD Fifth round: It reminds me of a photo of Nauru I once saw, but I think most pacific islands aren't as rocky as this one. Maybe one of the Solomon Islands? I really don't have much to go on and they seem rocky. I don't think I did get any points for this one. 19,000 km away is literally the other side of the world xD

Tom, Palmyra was a city that had essentially gone rogue from the mighty Roman Empire in 270 AD. It became independent and formed an empire that lasted for 3 years, but was eventually beaten by the Romans, whom later burnt the city down and left it in ashes.

Palmyra still has a photosphere of the ampitheatre on maps! (can't link it on youtube). Palmyra as a whole was not fully destroyed, certain parts of it were either fully or partially targeted. The ampitheatre was mostly destroyed, but many of the tetrapylon's columns were not original so hopefully it eventually can be restored, like they are restoring other of the destroyed artifacts.

1st round: the photographer's name made me think of a country with French history, so I had the hunch it might be Algeria. Didn't find the right place but was 200km off. 2nd round: also searched the whole Portuguese coast, then realized it would be a more obscure lusophone country. Checked out Equatorial Guinea first but then found the place on Cape Verde. 3rd round: Got a mile off in Kabul, couldn't be bothered to search the whole city 4th round: correctly guessed Tehran, but didn't find the right location, 4km off 5th round: Guessed Western Sahara bc of the deserty coast. Could be worse.

Great job:)) I, for one, could not guess where it was at all cause the street name just said 22nd and the infamous prison was a library specializing in Law:) I was really confused as to how you found out it was Tehran but it was just kinda lucky cause the plate just said Iran and you thought it was Tehran:) Here's a tip if you ever stumble upon a non blurred registration plate like that in Iran (which is highly unlikely) If it's got 2 of the same number or a 0 in that little 2 digit section it's the capital. 11, 22 and so on, also 10, 20 and the likes of em. بیا تو!(Get in, but translated to farsi xD)

I got 19989. Got 7 miles away in the first round cos I remembered my old Latin teacher telling us they filmed Gladiator in a Roman colosseum in Tunisia. I figured Tunisia wasn't obscure enough so I went with eastern Algeria near some hills.

First time beating Tom! 1. Went for Algeria off the bat because of the roman looking ruins and the guy's name sounded French. Also it looked very north African to me with regards to terrain. Didn't want to look for the ruins, thought it would take way too long and I wasn't even so sure on Algeria. 4,320 points 2. Saw Portuguese, ruled out Brazil and Portugal based on the map and went looking for islands in the Caribbean. Couldn't find any there, knew there were some in the Atlantic and found Cape Verde. Learned that "Praia" probably means beach, which makes sense cause I knew "playa" was beach in Spanish. Boa Vista was the second island I found, looked at all the street signs and confirmed. I got the right town too just by ruling out the places that were listed on the signs, and confirming the inland-looking environment. 5,000 points. 3. Kabul University. Looked for the arts building, couldn't find it. Saw the social sciences building looked very similar but I second guessed myself and went a little further up the road. Heartbreaking 4,999 points. 4. Saw the iconic Iranian license plates and hedged for Tehran considering how built up it looked. There was a mountain to the north, which confirmed the city in my eyes. Went a bit far north on a wild guess. 4,994 points. 5. First thought was Mauritania because it sort of reminded me of that one bald guy doing the train across the Sahara. Compass was pointing southward to the sea though, so it couldn't be. The rock looked black, which I associate with volcanos, so I looked for an island off the coast of Africa. Sadly went for the wrong coast and guessed one of the less inhabited Comoros islands (had no idea what they looked like). 58 points. Total of 19,371. Not too bad at all imo, that last guess really hurt though.

Definitely vote for more games from different types of maps. 1st round: Saw the Roman-esque ruins & landscape and thought somewhere not far off the Atlas mountains, settled on Algeria in part due to the photographer's name but selected a wrong landmark a couple hundred miles away. 2nd round: Saw Portuguese, went to Cabo Verde initially because of it being obscure, saw Sal Rei so got the island, took a little bit to orient the three sets of signs but got it. 3rd round: Saw snow, checked the photographer name, was confused, panned, saw Kabul University. Fortunately Kabul University was a big landmark when zoomed out. Took a while because of the labelling of the building as social sciences so was second guessing myself! 4th round: Saw Iran on the number plates, but had to guess Tehran and tried to find a street with the similar shape. Went 5 miles too far out of the centre. 5th round: Also has Namibia vibes at first but decided to go the southern part of Western Sahara because of the rocky deserty coast and thought it may have been Mauritania. Could've been worse! Looking forward to Wales reloaded!

I got a perfect score on the first Cabo Verde round because I recognized praia as the capital (although I think that's just portuguese for beach), and spent a few minutes searching the islands. Interestingly I also guessed Syria for round 1 and Namibia for round 5, I remember seeing abandoned mining building on the coast of Namibia in a top gear special or something.

I also guessed in Namibia on that last one. Feels validating to see Tom make the same mistake. For what its worth, I think Namibia was on my mind that round because the Skeleton Coast there is famous for lots of destroyed ships and I was trying to think of desert places where there would be lots of broken down stuff.

Tom, you usually beat me in these play-alongs, but I had you this time with 19000something - close to perfect until the last round. One thing I noticed that helped: the description of this Geoguessr map says you will only get rounds in countries without official street view coverage. This means you'll never get a round in Tunisia or Brazil, for example, which helped immediately: (round 1) clearly Roman or Greek ruins, looks like Northern Africa, can't be Tunisia because it has street view coverage and I don't think we're in Egypt. I know the Romans built all along the Southern coast of the Mediterranean, so at this point Libya, Algeria, and Morocco are all candidates, but I think Libya has less area that looks like not-deep-Sahara and so I started with Algeria. It's a big country but most of it is Sahara and the Romans were only along the Northern part. Also you can see mountains in the North in the photosphere, so we're not searching a huge strip of land. In a few minutes I found two ruins sites marked on the map. The first one didn't correlate since it had too much modern city built up around it, but the second correlated well and was marked "Roman Ruins" on the map. Put in my guess, got it right. (2) From the look of the place, the Portuguese signs, and the knowledge I couldn't be in Portugal or Brazil (again, because they have street view coverage) I immediately was thinking either Cabo Verde or Sao Tome. Some map searching led me to focus more on the former because there were more "praia" and "porto" locations there (plus it looked less forested). After a few minutes of searching I noticed the same Baia das Gatos that you noticed at 11:40, and figured that was good enough for me to make a guess and probably be close. Wrong island, but right country and not terrible points. (3) was very easy. (4) Easy to see we're in Iran. Iran is a big country and has many cities large enough to support big hardware stores, and I was not clever enough to try to read the Persian writing on the license plate and conclude we were definitely in Tehran. Still, I zoomed in on Tehran, found a north-south street with lots of yellow shops, and eventually found one marked "tool store." It wasn't the right tool store, but I was only a few miles away, pretty close to where you guessed. (5) I'm over 19000 points by this point, so have a chance to get a really good score if I get this. We're clearly some place warm; there are some fair-skinned dudes wearing shorts near what appears to be an African local who might be selling seashells. There's a dilapidated wooden structure I think might be an old oil rig, so I'm thinking some place such as Equatorial Guinea or Angola that has lots of oil. Trouble is, it doesn't look anything like Equatorial Guinea since there's almost no vegetation in sight, and I don't think it's Angola either because the Sun is slightly in the South. I looked at Cabo Verde again but most of the islands had more tree coverage and inland water than it looks like we have here. I glanced at the Caribbean (too green), the east coast of Africa around Somalia and Djibouti (nothing correlates), and the southern coast of Yeman and Oman before giving up after about 15 minutes. I didn't like any of them, and left the guess in Yemen. Was very wrong. Lesson learned: the southern islands in Cabo Verde look more Mediterranean whereas the two larger islands in the Northeast part of the country look more desert-y.

The Azorean Islands and Madeira are both owned by Portugal. My mom is from Sao Miguel and we're going to vacation there next summer, she hasn't been there since she moved to the U.S at 8 years old!

Tom, you should read the description of this map. It says "no countries where GeoGuessr would normally take you in an average round", so you can exclude Portugal, Brazil, Australia, etc, right away. The creator also has an image linked in the description that shows what countries are possible.

Compasses in photospheres usually don’t work and „obscure countries“ means that only countries are used that don’t have official coverage. Hope this helps.

The Cape Verde one was insane. Watching KZbin on the TV I go to my wife, that looks like the place we went in Cape Verde on that tour, and then you mentioned it. Insane. The only place I've ever been correct about on your channel. I reccomend going here. The beaches are fantastic

I got 13,453 points. 1st Round: I knew straight away this was Roman. It was clearly North African, and looked a lot like Leptis Magna, a famed city that the Roman Emperor Septimus Severus was from. I took a guess there and was wrong clearly. I didn't account for no ocean. 2nd Round: I was looking for a place that spoke Portuguese and was somewhat African. I settled on the former Portuguese colony of Angola. Dead wrong. 3rd Round: Easy enough to find, got it 19m off. 4th Round: Knew I wasn't going to find this street in Iran. I guessed Tehran. 5th Round: I thought this looked almost like Antarctica. However, you can see the heat swells in the distance, as well as the men not wearing heavier clothing. I guessed Eritrea.

Really enjoyed playing along this one. Got Kabul and was in Tehran but further from the spot than you were. Wrong portugese island (saw a single familiar word in the azores and just guessed there). The other two I was totally lost, and since I clicked the challenge link without seeing the restrictions of the map I also made some dumb placements in geoguessr-street-view countries like Greece for the last round.

I got the last one because I have been in that exact location a couple of years ago! Me and my mate were driving around the whole Island of Sal by ourselves on four-wheelers and stumbled upon this place, we had the same reaction as Tom! I love your videos my man, cheers from Denmark!!

This was a fun set. I got 19090. Round 1: Recognized the roman amphitheatre. I guessed it could be North Africa and plopped it in Tunisia. 4091 points Round 2: Scoured the Portuguese coast, but didn't find anything. Then I scoured other Portuguese-speaking islands and found Cape Verde with similar place names so plopped it. 4953 points Round 3: Kabul University so pretty obvious, but I couldn't find the building so plopped it on campus: 4999 points Round 4: Saw it was Iran from license plate. Guessed Tehran and plopped it: 4989 points Round 5: Absolutely no idea. Guessed somewhere on the coast of South Africa for some reason which was obviously wrong: 58 points

round the start of the video you went to Palmyra, I was interested because over where you were guessing was the baths of Diocletian. What's funny about that is the fact that I worked with a group to make a replica of it in minecraft of all things for a latin project. It didn't turn out great, but it was pretty interesting. Palmyra was a desert oasis and a good spot for trade which is why the romans were interested in it, If I remember correctly

Kabul is actually quite high, at 5800+ feet... the US Airforce practiced touch and goes here in Denver Colorado (The Mile High City) to emulate the conditions and elevation of Kabul. Wizard on Sir!

17,493 for me, first time doing one of these and not realising it was locations typically covered by Geoguessr. Round 1 - Thought it looked like site I saw in Libya once, so assumed it was a Roman site in North Africa. Scoured Libya for a while but then I picked a location close to the Algerian border in Tunisia. Round 2 - Did exactly the same as you, searched the Portuguese and Brazilian coasts, and then Madeira and the Azores, but forgot Cape Verde existed, so picked somewhere on the south coast of Portugal. Missed the Tui vans though, great spot. Round 3 - Bang on, same as you Round 4 - Pretty much the same again, around the streets of Tehran for a few minutes before picking a street that was 3 miles away. Round 5 - Open sea to the south and the dryness made me think it was one of the Canary Islands. I remember hearing Fuertaventure is the most arid, so chose a location on the south coast, so managed to get 2000+ points in that last round.

I got the first one as it seemed like roman architecture in a potentially north African landscape and the person who took the photo was french. I went straight to Algeria as french is one of its national languages and was occupied during the roman empire. The lady wearing the head scarf then further solidified my thoughts that is was north African .

I beat you. It was because of the first round. On the middle rounds we were equal, but on the last round I guessed horrible as well. I thought it might have been Kazakhstan or a country by the Caspian Sea in general, because of the surrounding terrain. The lads didn't really add up with the guess, but I said screw it. I reckoned you would fail on that round as well, so I felt confident over all.
