Accidents happen, but it's also possible for young ferrets to suffer from genetic insulinoma. I bought a pair of young ferret kits at the same time, and while one went on to live for a good 6-7 years, his sister died in under a year from insulinoma associated with a particular breeder on the East Coast of the US. While it may be shocking to see a ferret die so young, it doesn't automatically mean mistreatment by its owners.

I have 8 ferrets now, fostered three others, sadly lost five, and I worked for a ferret rescue for a while, and still am great friends with the owner of said rescue. I've had rats, hamsters, rabbits, cats, a lot of dogs, as well as birds for pets longer than I can remember. Please, you know something, and I know something, but we don't know everything. Did you know that ferrets can have green eyes when bred with a mink? All for larger, sturdier hunting ferrets. My friend will be getting one.

I am so sorry for your loss as well....we had a small albino about the same size "Jethro" that died over a year ago for reasons unknown still today. I had one prior that died of old age and still have four today :) greatest pets ever!

I have one that used to get sick frequently... I almost lost her a couple times, and discovered it was the kibble that was too hard on her intestines. (Too much grain product in the food, and not enough protein) I now feed mine jarred pure chicken & broth baby food, (about a half jar each per day), and about half the normal kibble, and both are thriving... make sure you put the vitamins in their water too... it really helps keep them healthy! Checkers is almost 8 and Demon is now 5, :D

I'm sure it was. Mine didn't seem to like being warm and cosy, preferring the cold floor. He slept in a hutch with a mezzanine chamber and a ramp. This was in a cold garage. He was very happy curled up in the straw.

Ferrets love playing that way. A lot of ferrets LIKE being picked up. Me and my ferret play that way, she runs around my bed and ill roll her on her back and tickle her tummy then pick her up and she crawls on my shoulder jumps off my back onto the bed and we just keep going XD She loves it.

They are amazing pets. When I had an apartment, they were amazing, I could let them run out on the front lawn grass (With me out there, and them in a harness/on a leash), and set up a small shallow pool for them. Don't ever let a baby get near your ear or nose though... the cute will destroy you.

it can, when the ferret gets too rough, but most of the time when you're play fighting with a ferret they'll bite very gently ^^ I love ferrets

@britecrystal I had mine for about three years and she died of pancreatic cancer because my dad kept feeding her cat food which is like candy to ferrets. After that I had a hard time feeding her the regular all meat ferret food. She was such a cutie.

Ferrets, at least standard breeds, are sort of prone to disease. Their immune systems aren't that great. I was given one by my aunt, he was a year old. My brother took care of him, is cage was always neat and he had a fairly balanced, controlled diet. One day, he wasn't acting like his usual self, so, mom took him to the vet. He had some kind of intestinal virus, the doctor said and he was kept there over night. He died that next morning. The vet explained what I have stated above.

when they are little, you train then not to bite, so when they do when they are older it's just a little nibble. It doesn't hurt very much

haha i was just having fun with ya. they do have a slight odor, but keep the cage clean and you can only wash the ferret like once a week or his skin will get dry so keeping cage clean helps keep ferret clean. mine lived to be 5 y/o and got brain tumors. some live to be over 10 but most do not. they are just as cute and fun as you see in the videos. their yawning is so cute and they sleep well. i found one that had been neglected and paid $50 "used". if he doesn't work out give him away.

Not all dogs do. It really depends on what they were bred to do, the personality, and the training, not saying youre a bad owner, I for one have a schnoodle (poodle/schnauzer) and he tries to attack my ferret, yet my puggle doesnt really care about her when shes out and about. It really just depends on the dog. Definately though, advice to all, the first time they play let the ferret sniff the dogs but and then put them down on the ground to play DO not keep your eye off of them and stay close.

@TheMimz11607 There are a few things you can try but ultimately its pure patience. You need to understand the reason why its biting you is not to hurt you but they play very rough with eachother. You must be consistent with your training methods. You can use something non toxic like lemon juice on your hands to deter by taste. You can also associate biting with bad things like going back in the cage or blowing in the ferrets face as they find this unpleasant but not cruel. They learn quickly.

@heyimchara we use this stuff called "Laxatone" and "Furo-Vite" The laxatone is for the furballs you cant get it at a local vets office and Furo-Vite i guess u cant get from a local petshop or ask at the vets, just give a small but to them every morning (( thats what we do)) and if they dont like the taste dip a little bit over their mouths and theyll lick it anways, *Furo-Vite = Vitamans* *Laxatone = furball provention thing* lol!! hope they stay safe

to stop biting, or punish in general, the best way is to "scruff" them by holding them up by the skin on the back of their necks for a second or two and saying NO loudly.

BUT the cats played with her, and the ferret scared the cats at first tho so she was pretty smart and stuff, i say get one, and soon we were able to let her walk around the house on her own and she loved it, there a great pet i say!

@caopizhenji... they are a lot of work in upkeeping! make sure you read up on it before you get one!!! they require 2-3 hours of your time a day, but they are awesome little fuzzballs, and I think they are totally worth it :) at 1.5 years old, they still play like that though :D
