I live in Utah, too--our ferrets liked tunneling in the snow for short periods (snow is pretty much the same temperature everywhere) but you have to be careful that they don't get lost, and be aware that they can get cold very quickly. Keep an eye (and a leash) on them at every moment--otherwise, they could freeze to death. There's a video on KZbin where people filled their bathtub with snow for their ferret to play in--you might try something like that!

Amazing! Look at the length of that tunnel! My ferret doesn't like the snow. You are so lucky you have such ambitious diggers!

Much like liquid water, snow can be any temperature that supports the state. True that snow will take longer to change temperature than air, but if you put snow in a 50 below environment, it will eventually reach 50 below in temperature (conservation of energy requires it). Snow can make good shelters because it insulates well and will be kept solid from the cold on the outside, while allowing the inside air to warm up.
@pear2apple16 жыл бұрын
Thats cute! I hope mine enjoy the snow too. I may have to bring snow inside for them to play in it. They're both afraid of water, so who knows how that will go!

ferrtes in the midwest/east coats tend to grow a lot thicker winter coat then the ferrets here on the west coast due to the difference in weather, as long as theyre not out there for a prolonged period of time its perfectly fine to let them have fun in the snow :)

Ferret's were bred to be hunting animals. People went send them into rabbit warrens (systems of tunnels) and the ferrets job was to chase the rabbits out into the hunters net. Some people still use them for hunting, but mostly Ferret's are kept as pets, but they still have a love for tunnels.

@beberosa1028 IIRC those things originated in high latitude, high elevation areas so they're pretty well equipped to deal with cold weather. Wouldn't be surprised if that's part of the reason for keeping ferrets cool being an issue with taking care of em. (Or so I hear.)

They're as likely to come back as a cat, meaning you never know. Mine were almost always leashed. I let one walk around loose one time and he spied a hole under the porch and beat me to it. He came out after about 1 1/2 hrs, with me shaking the treat cup for him and offering raisins, but he was no worse for wear. Had fun exploring in the dirt.

@beberosa1028 old comment is old, but Ferrets originate in Germanic countries and the Netherlands, with the Mynk being from Russia. They are very well equipped to handle the cold. The reason their bodies are shaped like that is for burrowing, and their fur gets very thick in the winter time. It would be mean NOT to let them out into the snow once in a while if you lived where it got snow.
@ThisIsHuas13 жыл бұрын
@Hedgepook depending on the environment if they would die or not. They were introduced to New Zealand to control rabbit populations or something & there are still feral colonies of them living semi wild, but that's because of the climate there & the abundance of food sources.
@Rita197215 жыл бұрын
Ferrets have a very distinctive smell about them. It's not repulsive in any way. When my ferrets are around, I can always tell it from the odor in the air. My husband says that they smell horribly. My daughter totally disagrees with him and thinks that they smell good. At the pet store, their cages have terrible odor coming out. I think it has to do with their diet. I want to tell you one thing - their bowel movements and urine don't have a strong odor whatsoever (vs. cats or dogs).

@sanchofirestorm Black footed ferrets are an exception. And they're also an endangered species, so by numbers, they're a poor example when referring to ferrets as a whole. BF ferrets are found in the wild, yes. But the common domestic ferret (originating in Europe) is not able to survive in the wild. (Or hasn't been known to for approx 2,500 yrs.) Another exception however, is a ferret/polecat hybrid, which is able to survive in the wild, as seen in New Zealand and Australia. I hope this helps.

ya i take her in after a second and when she warms up i take her out again and then she warms up in the house and goes in her cage or plays etc.. snow is not the same everywhere. some places are more icy and snow is different in different places.

@mrsgarfield1998 Ferrets sleep when theyre BORED. My ferret had the run of my house and he was awake 15 hours a day. If ur ferret is sleeping all the time then ur simply not playing with it. If u have time 2 dedicate 2 playing with your ferret and let it out of its cage id say no less than 15 hours then get one! They are amazing.

Ferrets have been kept by people as pets and hunters for a long time. People would tie a cord around them and send them down rabbit holes to catch and kill the rabbits for meat. Digging and looking for prey comes naturally to ferrets, so they are in HEAVEN here!

@JncGwen Don't be! as long as you don't stay out longer than 20- 25 minutes then your fine! I know it seems weird but ferrets do better in the cold than the heat! Don't worry, worry more when you take them outside when it's warm. If its over 89 degrees keep your ferrets INSIDE!

@skaterboy0206 Not exactly. I'm pretty sure ferrets tunnel, in snow and dirt. It's kind of exactly the thing they would do in the wild. It's certainly not abuse though. When I was a kid our white pet ferret escaped the house through a dryer vent in the middle of winter, plenty of snow on the ground. We thought she was dead but we found her eating cat food on the porch two weeks later, and she was even fatter than before.
