I am using aquaponic method as close to the natural bio-filtration system. It is different than mechanical filtration system that regularly remove waste from the water supply to make the pond clean .This Bio-filtration systems will leave the waste in the water, but convert it to a less toxic nitrate that is safe for the lobsters.

Actually it is the beneficial bacteria that produce the nitrates. As the waste decomposes it produces ammonia, which a set of bacteria turns into nitrites, and another set turns into nitrates. However nitrates are still harmful in large quantities, the reason why yours works is all those plants and the algae on the sides use the nitrates as a fertilizer. So you keep putting in food they will keep thriving.

just a tip. Be sure to monitor the acidity in your water. Those cinder blocks contain alkaline that overtime will leach into your water. When the alkaline builds up enough it will kill everything in your pond. I learned that the hard way. It would be better to use something other than concrete or cinder blocks. Natural rocks work great.

Great set up! Great use of the cinder blocks. Unfortunately, I have about this many in a 10 gallon tank and I found this looking for DIY crayfish hides but apparently no one is dumb enough to their blue lobsters get out of hand like I have. They got along insanely well for a few years [multiplying and multiplying] until the original queen died and I was stupid and stirred up the muck in the bottom for some forgotten reason and now just about every mid to adult sized lobster is maimed in one way or another. I haven't ever vacuumed because I don't know how to avoid killing the babies. Because of this I also don't do water changes which proves that these guys can live just about anywhere that isn't outright toxic. The water is finally under control and clear and now I am looking for hide ideas. I was balancing subway tiles on rocks to create levels but one collapse too many told me that the next could end in injury and to stop risking it. 10 gallon tank-20-30+ visible crayfish and countless fry (sea monkeys). Because they don't share space after a certain age I have a lot of wasted space using traditional aquarium fish hides and would like to start over. How can I avoid pouring babies into my plants when recycling the water? Any suggestions on how to house this many while utilizing the space individually? Now that many are injured [the fighting stopped long ago] I am going to have an even harder time trying to give these homes-and I never asked a fee but got no takers. Not even from fish stores. So until I can rehome them I need help keeping them safe.
