What are the sizes of the drums used for each pond? The drums in the front look like 55 gallon drums and the trash can looks like a 32 gallon trash can. How much PVC pipe did you use for this set up? I also want to build a backup generator just in case of a power outage. I’m trying to build something like this in my back yard to become more self sufficient due to all the rising prices here in the US. I’m also planning to build a chicken coop on my property too. Thanks for your help. I appreciate it!

@roydeichmiller74372 жыл бұрын
My roommate is thinking of raising some type of fish for food in our backyard. She doesn't have a clue where to start leaning how to do the whole fish filter/pump ect setup on a small scale & later take it to another level as experience is gained. Plus living in Colorado can be brutal in the winter so not sure if having a tank setup outside would be wise even under a roof like your setup. Cool idea about growing duckweed in floating baskets to feed your fish.
@BackyardHobby2 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, living in colorado is kind of hard to raise fish, it has to be indoor & need water heater to maintain right temperature during winter, but nothing is imposiible if fishkeeping is your passion. Thanks for liking my video.

I'm using an 18 foot dough boy with new liner, center drain for cleaning. I have unlimited water. I will use the so called waste water on the garden areas. I like the duck weed cages. I plan on using solar for aeration, an solar lighting to attract bugs, It does work well with blue gill fish. I need to cover my pools with netting or wire for bird protection.

Thank you for sharing this! How many kg do you estimate you are able to harvest annually from this setup? How often are you able to harvest for food? Very keen on being 100% self sustaining in the current global context. Thank you for your time & knowledge.
@BackyardHobby2 жыл бұрын
It depends on how strong & how big your filtration when it comes to stocking density. On my 1000gal tank setup i can stock 300 tilapia that has weight of 2lbs each. 300 x 2 = 600lbs = 266kgs annually. I only harvest whenever my family feels like eating fresh tilapia usually weekend when were all together.

What do you do with all the mosquitos forming from the filter tanks?
@BackyardHobby2 жыл бұрын
Those are midgets( blood worm larvae), they are beneficial, they’re breaking down fish waste into non toxic form. Mosquitos wont survive in running water.

@@BackyardHobby Well considering it was not said(or originally said) by Mother Teresa, and you're saying it's not a joke........ Are you willfully or accidentally wrong? It taste like salt water fish, thats the advantage of growing your own food. u know its clean and free from toxic. Yes u can start small and upgrade once youre getting the knowledge, i started watching legit youtubers and asking questions frm comment section, thats how i learned.

If you had unlimited water you would just flow water through the system. That's my plan. Solar water well pumping as much as 50 GPM through several tanks.

i hv a seperate tub for breeding with 1 male to 5 females ratio, i harvested fry and raise them in a 30 gal aquarium, within a month they will grow as fingerlings & ready to b transfeered to the 1000 gal tilapia pond.

@@BackyardHobby I wish I were smart enough to breed tilapia I need to figure it out maybe part of the problem is I am not smart enough to sex them and set up a proper breeding tank or maybe I need warmer water or something. I am smart enough to have a lot of fish but too soft to kill them on a schedule and the bigger they grow the more I want to keep them. Oh well.
