As a life-long car-modifier, I wanted to say that in general you don't want to buy a "resto-mod" unless you are going to work on it yourself. It isn't that difficult to figure out what modifications were done to a car, if you have a basic knowledge of wiring and the workings of aftermarket engine management, etc. It is however very time consuming. I'm sure Wizard "could" have figured it out, I think he turned the job down because he didn't want to charge you for a very time-consuming job that another shop probably could do with less cost. This just reaffirms my opinion that Wizard is a man of integrity who keeps the interests of his clients in mind. The challenge will be finding another good shop to do the work. So many shops, particularly "race shops" or shops that specialize in modified cars, operate without any integrity whatsoever. If I couldn't do my own work, I would have dropped this hobby years ago.

it would have been cheaper for them to remove all of the "mod" and do it themselves. ive built many engine-swapped cars with custom harness work and it's best to just rip it out and start from scratch. that way you know what's going on

That FAST EFI is USB , download the software and take a "laptop" and USB Cable to a Dyno with you and that should sort out the box. It has a base tune from the factory. The base tune might not fuel correct for the size of engine in the SuperBird. that would make it lean at idle(possible the cooling problem). Once someone connects to the box it should show connection issues. hope this helps, Thanks for the video.

IMO the best place to start would be pull the entire engine electrical system out, start from scratch. It often takes longer and gives a poorer result trying to figure out what previous people have done.

SuperBird cooling issue. Tyler, have the Wizard check the direction of flow for the SuperBird. Some pumps move the water clockwise, some counter. If the wrong pump is installed, it will never cool well, but at a glance look like all it well. My buddy had a racing pump on his Vette that did this and was difficult to find the problem.

The cam in that motor is likely the culprit. You shouldn't need an auxiliary vacuum pump. The stock street Hemi had a lopey idle and was under rated at 425 HP(IIRC), but the headlights worked with the stock cam. Put a milder cam in it (something closer to stock) and it will _still_ have plenty of power for street use. Set the valve lash, too, and it will probably run much better.

A lot of the cooling is the design of the vehicle. The Superbird/Daytona was never intended to sit in traffic and do less than 60 MPH. It was made to do 160-200 for 500 miles. It has very small intakes, and this was a sacrifice for aerodynamics (hence the name 'aero car'). The only reason the car even existed was for homologation purposes.

With the race cars I build and work on we use Haltech ECU’s that can learn on the fly. The Holley EFI can as well. However to really get full drivability down right can take hours of tuning. It’s rather easy to tune for power which is what many dyno tuning shops and tuners in general do. Only when your car will cold start, hot start, drive at all throttle positions in various traffic in all weather is your car properly tuned. Anyone saying they can do this in an hour is lying.

You you 2 possibly have the best team to take 2 channels and bring them together. I say this because on the Wizards side he shows us what a shop can go through on a day-to-day basis & tools used & issues found & the repairs & tricks for big repairs & hovies channel takes the customer side of things as he brings problem vehicles to the Wizards shop either good or bad & hovie some how keeps his composure well when Wizard tells him repairs are 5k or more. Funny thing is. That is a super easy car to work on. Though Wizard deals with newer and exotic cars. So I can understand how this isn't within his wheelhouse. Superbirds, even stock ones, always had issues with overheating. It is due to the nose cone. While moving though it will not overheat. After looking at the radiator I will assume it is a 3 core. If you are going to be idling at a stop I would recommend getting a 4 core for it. Since it is setup for race mode. It will barely run at idle while cold.

@@mexicanspec It has a single wiring harness. I am not saying Wizard couldn't do it. It just isn't cost effective for him. That wiring is a nightmare behind the dash. Don't get me wrong. That is very very poorly done in there.

@@mexicanspec Exactly. Stock, absolutely it would be very repairable, even despite its racing heritage. But that's true of most stock cars, even if you can't find the parts themselves easily, the schematics are there. Custom work and custom engines, with no easily traceable source for a custom schematic if it had one, means so much more work for a normal mechanic and while they understand what they're looking at relatively, it's almost like learning another person's art because it kinda is.

I put an electric fan from an '88 Lincoln mark viii into my "74 Camaro. It keeps the car running at 160. Those OEM fans pull quite a bit more cfm than any aftermarket fan will.

Yes KSR is great but he's more Holley efi I wish I still n KCMO I did alot with FAST EFI stuff it looks like one the old one's I'm sure it need to be updated with the newer software is alot better at self tuning the Old ones should be a easy fix though

@@CoRRemixz Yeah, I don't know either of them, but with enough experience you can figure it out. At least enough to dial in the fuel tables, and fix the cold start / cranking fuel tables. Is the fast efi one of those "self learning" type? I was wondering if the guys who built it just installed it and let it sort itself out, and that's the best it got, with no real hand tweaking at all. Even I figured out how to get my car to start right when retuning it myself for E85. Not bragging, itcs just part of the process. If that's not done, then I wonder how messy the rest of the tune is.

The first gen was early self learning but very cured did act very quick but the 2.0 was alot better it looks like a first gen to me !! that motoec had no self tuning !!!Kenny Detweiler done that motor it made 1456 hp in 1997 thought that was all the power in the world🤪🤪🤪 now the car makes 4000 + has been 3.62 218 n the 1/8 on radials !!! crazy how times changed look up the blue Malibu that Mark Mickey from M&M transmission drives 🙂🙂 had a lot of fun with that car late 90s early 2000's

I used to run a race shop. Every restomod that came in with that ecu was a nightmare and a headache. Keep in mind we were used to tuning with Link, Motec, Haltec, HP Tuners, AEM, and Cobb software among others. I remember a beautiful 70 Chevelle SS 454 that the XFI was removed and the car ran better on a Holley carb 🤦‍♂️

Here you go Hoovie, comment I found re identifying the car a little better. All super birds had vinyl tops to conceal the special glass insert. Daytona chargers had unique rear glass to the body (also compare to charger 500 rear glass)

Superbirds and Daytona's was and are still notorious for overheating issues while sitting, know 2 owners of these one has a Superbird the other has a matching set Dayona/Superbird. And because of the small grill openings the radiator does not draw in enough air through the fan to cool the coolant. When you are in forward motion it is fine but if you let them set for over 10 minutes the temp guages begin to rise very quickly. Both have told me and let me ride along and they have to plan a trip by taking it with their regular cars and so time themselves at any stoplights. If they are over 10 minutes then they have to either plan another route or scratch it.

The condition of your Hemi Superbird seems great. I would pull all that modern crap out, and make it all factory correct. Find a real 70's 426 Hemi block, fit it with the Hurst 4spd (or 727 auto whatever it came with originally), original torsion bar suspension up front and leaf springs in the rear. And some nice Goodyear Polyglas tires. Graveyard Carz can help you out. If it's a real Hemi Superbird, it deserves this, right?

Any race car should have a harness installed. I'd have passed on the resto-mod with red flags like that. A halfway done racing setup is either a headache putting it back to stock or a lot more money finishing it so it will pass an inspection. His other race car, that's an example that's what you buy. It's done right and can be taken out tomorrow. This is a bit of a franken-beast, and TBH, it's designed for oval tracks at 180mph. Not your typical road course. Handling on these in corners is legendarily bad.

Have wizard check compression for ratio and remove valve covers and measure cam specs degree. Then you will know what you need to do to make it more street able or daily drivable. Hopefully the compression is not above 10.5-1 so a cam swap and a tune is all you need.

I would start from scratch. Source a date code correct 426 hemi, get rid of the cage, electrical boxes and aftermarket suspension pieces and put it back to stock. I’m not a fan of the super bird/daytona but the modifications done by the previous owner(s) did not do the car justice by any means…

Lots of people think putting modern high power high tech stuff in an old car gives you the best of both worlds BUT most installers are idiots and they have no clue how to make a car work together - especially amateur home garage builders. Garage builders and flippers put 80% of the car together and the remaining hard stuff goes into a box or gets lost. The more stock and engineered a car is the more reliable and proper it will work. Advanced car builders can mix and match parts from anywhere and with enough work can make the car run right but this comes from years of experience. I think these electric conversion idiots are delusional, they think putting a couple Tesla parts in an old VW will save the world and make them cool but these people are often more dreamers than car people and the vast majority of these cars they built will fall apart and never work they way they intended. I do classic Porsches and I have found when a car comes in loaded with aftermarket parts that runs like crap - the more aftermarket junk I remove and replace with original parts - THE BETTER THE CARS RUN!!!! Most aftermarket parts are just an attempt to sell you something, be extremely critical of aftermarket parts before you buy.

Cars are built to a price point with limitations in order to earn the company a profit. When a person builds his own car, he can do it to his own standards, sometimes far superior to the factory and other times far inferior. It all depends on the builder. Young people get nervous and will get screwed over by poor mechanics. I have improved my Ford's suspension performance, frame rigidity, engine performance and braking substantially. Porsche has higher standards so to top Porsche you had better know your stuff. Also, just from age, all cars need gone through and rebuilding to run well 50-60 years after they left the factory. You would not be able to find original parts. Your only choice is aftermarket. My VDO and Auto Meter gauges are running perfectly.

@@jamesmedina2062 all I do is air cooled Porsches - so no need to change poor quality engineering on exotics, Ford on the other hand - yup lots to upgrade and revise on an American car but the mass production on those was 100x that of Porsches. I can say confidently at this point in my career I can top the original design of Porsches and improve on them but I get paid to do this full time. You can also get OEM original parts for 50-60yr old cars! But you have to hunt and search daily - here is an odd example… ball joints for the earliest 911 should be made with grade 12 fasteners but the new spec manufacture Sebro builds these ball joints in Germany with a common weaker grade 8 fastener so there is a chance of your front end breaking at some point (I did it on a race car) so my solution is to find NOS parts for the 67S cars I build - finding the right best stuff is a nightmare for a repair shop and a challenge for a car builder.

The comments show that there are a lot of people here that have no idea what they are talking about. One thing that you have to remember is that Dodge is the most expensive muscle car to buy parts for. So for all the people saying just take everything out and go back to stock, Dodge parts are expensive but big block parts are twice as expensive then add the word hemi and the price goes up exponentially. That's assuming you can even find them in the first place, less than one percent of 1970 Dodge/Plymouths were hemi's. Even if he could find all of the parts to take it back to stock, it would still be a "Frankenstein's Monster" and would never be worth what a "numbers matching" car would be.

Change the flexible accordion coolant hose, it might not seem as though the turbulence created by the ribs would be significant but it actually makes a huge difference in flow! While this wont solve the overheating issues it surly will help!

I’ve seen this car since Hoovie dragged it home and I have to say, the more I see those rims, the more I really think they work, especially all shined up. As for all the electrical problems, rip it out and invest in stock wire jig harnesses. It’ll pay out in the long run and be much easier to work on.

The superbird might have MLS head gaskets. Improper plumbing flow on aftermarket intake?? Pressurize the Coolant system over nite. Run it @ high idle for a few minutes with tester still connected. Pull the spark plugs. If the gaskets seam to be it. Order a jar of Sodium Silicate on line or a Pharmacy. Drain & flush coolant. Add the jar of sodium with water only to the system, drive the car for a hr or so ( I drive or run them for 4-5 hours) Drain the coolant system, remove radiator hoses and intake heater hose 24hrs. I did my old bmw 633 and drove it 5 years with no flaws. A Ford powerstroke , A few Gm 4100 motors as well. Even some closed coolant system marine motors. Try it. To carry on but Also to add, Some MSD ignition systems Don’t last.. or cold start carb leak down or jetting. it could have a cam designed for a high stall converter with a 1000-1200 rpm idle. Lack of pure oxygen. To better describe.. ( At a lower idle you would have water intrusion between cylinders if it was in a boat) and possibly worn distributor causing pick up issues. ( low rpm/timing issues) popping through the carb. Ah, The good old days. Now back to my 40k mile 5 owner N62 intermittent vanos issue with 0 fault

Neat video, Tyler. Kudos to Wizard. He knows what he doesn't know, and is up front. Well done indeed. It is funny, but when these cars were new the Hemi was a hard sell. It was expensive and when tuned to be livable on the street it was slower than a 440 6-Pack.

With a big block, high compression engine like that HEMI in the super bird you NEED a mechanical fan and a shroud. I’ve run into it time and time again, electric fans just don’t move enough air through on a hot day in traffic or idling for long periods. I figured the wizard would have recommended one but I guess he really doesn’t mess with old performance stuff much. like the idea of the overdrive manual trans, that’s a great upgrade for any older car that had a 3 or 4 speed in it. The rest of this stuff is a little much though.

It depends on the fan. Many modern engines produce more heat and are cooled by an electric fan. In fact, who even uses a mechanical fan anymore? I'm sure the fans you came across were the cheapest thing someone could find, and not sized for the application.

Hoovie, go to the far corner of the wizzards shop and locate a garbage can. Remove that Fast control box, the wiring that goes with it, the intake and cam and throw it away. Call up jegs and get a edelbrock intake, cam and 2 dual quad carbs. Then It will run right again and have vacuum to run the brake booster too. You'd have been better off buying a hemi cuda than that, but there can be hope for it.

my thoughts to. the Superbird and the Daytona where both known to overheat while sitting at idle because they just don't have enough grill to intake air. Went to Talladega many years ago and they did a parade of old Nascars on the roads around the track and quite a few of these where in that parade, and I remember at least 2 of the probably 8+ Superbirds and Daytonas had drivers turning there car off if they stopped for more than 30-45 seconds.

@@zach2beat I had not initially considered this but maybe the fan turn on settings are controlled by the ECU. If that is the case it could explain the explanation given here. Technically that is related to the "tune".

It's not that he couldn't build a racecar. It's not knowing how everything has been done already to troubleshoot it. The only real way is ripping it all out and starting over and that's not exactly economical time or money wise.

Nah, sending it to someone that can make money off it as content Is a better idea. While the car is simpler to work on and figure out then some modern pile of junk, There is more to it then just trying to fix it. This is why cletus or Tavarish are a much better option.

Race shops (actual shops that build race cars) will also know the parts and requirements needed to pass inspection. If you want to race it in proper events, there's literally a half an inch thick pile of regulations. For instance, some inspector says your roll bar is mounted 6 inches too far back or your fuel cell is in the wrong location - back to the shop it goes. There is no wiggle room - you pass inspection for your class or you watch from the stands.

Your hemi sounds fine. Hemis are not like modern computer controlled fuel injected cars. Their idles are naturally rough, especially when cold. They can be temperamental even after being warmed up. They can load up and stall. To clear a flooded hemi, just put the pedal to the floor and crank it over, when it starts to ignite a few cylinders just back way off on the throttle. I used to drive my hemi cars with both feet.

Sooo ya got a Superbird unit body rebuild, some correct running gear, and a cobbled together bunch-O-parts. One look under the hood and, the battery is re-located, torsion bar suspension gone, scrap vacuum pumps to run the headlights, a pile of poor choice/installed electronics, but hey you got a chrome custom radiator hose and a running 426 Hemi.

Terrible advice. Believe absolutely nothing you watch on TV. You will never see a Mark Worman restored car at Barrett-Jackson or Mecum for very good reasons. Find a professional restoration shop rather than a guy who turned his hobby into a TV show.

@@danielmarek4609 I have a close friend that before closing his shop in Los Angeles( after almost 30 years) and only working on his own cars, did some of the greatest Mopar Muscle car restorations ever seen. He even did the 3.4 million dollar 71 Hemi Cuda convertible. He's probably had 15 cars through his shop that were incorrectly restored on that show. This Worman guy is a collision shop owner that took his Hobby and turned it into a TV show....

If you don't understand the mods, or have problems with mods then take them off and go back to the original, or close to it. I bought a 69 Mustang that had mods and have been taking them off one at a time to make it more streetable.
