I grew up in an extreme hoarding situation, yes, with animals and the whole bit like on the shows. I was never taught how to properly clean anything. Some people may think, duh! But for others this is so helpful. I learned by trial and error as as young wife and mother. How helpful this video would've been then! Side note: 5 out of my 7 kids are boys! Lawd!

This morning I was deluttering and reorganizing the big drawer at my kitchen sink . I have to tell you that I heard your voice more than once while doing so. The first step was look for trash and one would think that one wouldn't have trash in their kitchen tool drawer, but alas! I did find some. Then I started going through each item to decide if it was something I could declutter and I actually ended up with two plastic grocery bags of things I decluttered! But the one that made me chuckle to myself was when I found items that really didn't belong in that drawer to begin with so I thought to myself, "where would I look for it first?" And then I started to lay the item down to "take care of it later" and I could hear you saying, "Take it there NOW!" You have helped me with so many things like that to help me be able to bring our home under control. I'm definitely now aware of where my clutter threshold is! And another BONUS has been that my husband has now gotten on board with it! A month ago he cleaned out our basement and three sheds in our backyard. Just want you to know you are a blessing!

I learned how to clean a toilet EXACTLY like you do from the book, "Speed Cleaning" back in the 1990's. A well known cleaning service came to clean my MIL's home a couple of years ago and I was totally grossed out to watch them clean the toilet all wrong and start by wiping the rim of the bowl, and then the seat and finishing with the handle! Uggghhhh!!!! 😱 I learned from you, Dana, that Speed Cleaning only works if 1. We have decluttered the bathroom counters and 2. We actually clean the bathroom weekly or bi-weekly or more often than every 10-12 weeks. 🤪 Thank you for all you do!!!!

I used a lot of checklists when teaching our children to clean, beginning with their bedrooms, then bathroom, then public rooms (living/dining, kitchen). I would work with them for the first few times showing them how and explaining my standards, then they would do the job without me followed by my inspection. When I knew they understood the checklist and standards they were free to do the job without the inspection each time. They have all thanked me, now that they are adults, for teaching them how to clean! Keep up the good work Dana, you are helping many people who were never taught how to get things done.

Thanks, Dana! What a great list! I do all of this in our bathroom. ☺️ Plus, since we have ceramic tile on the lower half of the bathroom walls, I swipe around the top of that because it can get dusty otherwise. If they look like they need it, I go ahead and wipe the ceramic walls down too. I make a point to wipe off the showerhead thingy too, because I noticed it gets dusty if I don't. Less often, I get the stepladder so I can wipe the top of the door and the light fixture over the mirror. Again, these areas tend to get dusty, but I usually put this off until deeper cleaning days because I'm too lazy to get the stepladder. And I keep a broom in our bathroom all the time. It hangs on the wall behind the door. I use it to sweep the floor in there every day. I won't walk down the hall to get the other broom, but having a broom handy means I'll do it. If I don't, hair and dirt build up quickly, so a daily sweep makes the weekly clean easier for me. Thanks so much, Dana! I, too, must have a routine in my bathroom in order to stay on track in there.

Way too many wipes for me! I use a microfiber cloth and start with the mirrors, then I do the countertop and finally the toilet working from top to bottom. You can also use a separate microfiber cloth to do the toilet if you prefer. I use a designated bathroom sponge to clean the bathroom sink and shower. I found that using the washable cloths has helped me cut back on paper towel usage. With the cost of everything going up, I found this to be one way for me to save on my shopping bill. :)

In my ideal world, I'd want to use cloths or rags instead of wipes, but now as a mom of 2 little kids, I sometimes only have 1 minute to clean off a surface with a wipe before my children join me, or all heck breaks loose because, you know, Mommy had to pee (so selfish, I know! 🙄🤣). I hope once my children are older, we can go back to reusable cloths!

I’m deep cleaning the house room by room (to sell) and quickly got over my hatred of cleaning. I had trauma therapy last year to get over my hatred of the kitchen due to family members being angry at me in there and not wanting me to be in there while they wanted to use it. It worked and the kitchen’s been clean since. These last few weeks I developed a rhythm even cleaning the walls and ceiling. I had a movie on and when an 80s song played I found myself dancing on the laundry bench before I knew it. I had a cupboard and freezer up against the bench so I didn’t fall off. Don’t like ladders or climbing on benches but I’m conquering them.

Interesting tidbit... there's actually more potentially harmful bacteria growing in the average shower than the average toilet. Personally, I swap the order of cleaning the shower and the toilet, contrary to popular opinion. I use bleach, so I'm not particularly worried about cross contamination. Think about it though, you clean your entire body (including your privates, sweaty armpits, dirty feet), the steam opens up your sinuses and you get all snotty in there, a lot of people actually pee in the shower, brush their teeth, shave etc., and the shower stays damp unlike the outside of your toilet, so the bacteria actually grows faster. Plus, soap scum and hair probably cling to dirt and bacteria too. It certainly seems more gross to clean the shower with the same rag as the toilet, but if you're worried about causing cross contamination (if you use a rag instead of wipes) the shower is the dirtier of the two.
