Took me a song or two to get used to his voice (haven’t listened to a ton of Geese so Cameron is pretty new to me), but he had me hooked by song 3. His voice is super interesting, not pretty but super expressive and genuine. He also reminds me of Rufus Wainwright who has an angelic voice quite contrary to his, but the song-writing and use of voice register changes feels like Rufus. Truly an enchanting album, glad I was able to find it so soon after it released without it being on my radar.

AVAA, huge fan of Geese. Funny story, my buddies and I went to go see Geese during the fall of last year in Norfolk, VA. The show was in a bar/pizza parlor, kind of hard to describe lol. Anyways the layout of the stage, given it wasn't a "real venue", meant Geese were actually hanging out in the room behind us. So they bring their equipment out and have to meander through the crowd to get to the stage. It was awesome, maybe 50 people in the audience? About halfway through the show Cameron pulls out a pizza costume, proclaims "I'm a pizza", and proceeds to play a few more songs in the costume. I saw them again a few months ago as an opener for King Gizzard. They're excellent live. The drummer, Max Bassin, is an absolute machine.

AVAA, this is my album of the year ahead of Night Palace (which I listened to because of your review). I think listening to $0 was the first time I realised I might actually be hearing to an all time great song while it's fresh. literally couldn't wait for the album to come out after $0 released. Cameron is such a lyrical and production inspiration.

Love this album! Going to pretend that my comment referencing it had some part in this video being made. Also, I saw Geese live not long ago and they very much indicated they were staying together and have new material in the works.

AVAA!!!!! One of the things I loved about the album is how honest it felt in coming from the perspective of a younger artist. One of the things I wondered going into this album (and you had mentioned this in the 3D Country review) was whether or not such a young artist would have the wealth of experience to make a full-length, vulnerable, singer-songwriter album compelling. It obviously worked out alright, but I also loved how he engaged with this idea in the music. When he talks about Nina (Simone I think) knowing "what it is to be a mountain"--aka having an omniscient perspective--it feels like he's admitting to the limitations he has as a young songwriter and the insecurity that creates. Same with saying he never survived the "cancer of the 80's" as many of his idols did. Even the way he talks about love often boils down to moving towards or away from something (as in "Love Takes Miles" and "Nausicaa"), thereby gaining more perspective on whatever he leaves behind. Great stuff that definitely made me consider my place in the world and what I can and can't offer as a young person.

i feel the same about solo artists breaking off from bands so i didn't listen to Grian Chatten's Chaos for the Fly last year. this year i did and was BLOWN AWAY. and it puts into context what Grian does vocally across Romance

The Voidz is a band Mr. Professor Skye. In some interview that I can't find right now, Casablancas called the Voidz more of a band and the Strokes more of a solo project. He and Amir Yaghmai (guitarist) talk about that in another interview in Flood Magazine. Also, if Cameron Winter's real name isn't Cameron Winter, he's been preparing for this "Cameron Winter" bit for upwards of 3 years, which isn't totally out of the question I guess, but probably not (I think it is his name). Also, Geese is still together, they just performed at "Geesefest", so I think the flock remains... Gonna watch the video now, trusting that it will be an AVAA I think Nina is either a lost love or like a stand-in for ideal divine femininity - just like empathy and understanding and compassion and also indifference and passivity and so on

AVAA! I interpreted $0 a little differently, especially the GOD ISSS REAALL part. I think he means being a $0 man, someone without possessions or possibly being homeless, has nowhere to turn other than to god. suddenly after someone making him feel worthless, this realization of god being real is super intense. plus immediately after is this heavenly blissful instrumental… much to think about.

I love Geese! Haven't listened to his debut yet though. I will do that in the next days. AVAA! P.s. Winter Cameron said this about going solo: "I feel that if the band had made this album with me they would be punching down as musicians, they would've had to supress too much of their own personalities to fit within what I was envisioning, also they would've had to stay kinda quiet" He answered on Reddit to some fans. From what he wrote, it doesn't seem Geese are going to break up or anything like that

AVAA! I just assumed that Cameron is singing about Nina Simone. I can tell he’s a fan of her from his Spotify playlists. Not sure how it relates to the actual lyrics but maybe he’s just heavily influenced and feels like he’ll never be as good of a musician as her? “Nina, I’m not nothing but when you lie on the piano, I am reminded I am stupid”.

avaa. just wanted to say what the other two pedals do haha : one of em makes the things that hit the strings sit closer to the strings so that when you press the keys they sound softer and gentler since they don't travel as far and hit as hard. the other one is kinda like the sustain pedal but it is more selective, it only sustains the keys that are pressed down when you hit the pedal not any keys afterwards while the sustain pedal makes everything you play sustain as long as it is held down.
