The "Lights Out" game mode has been a bit lacking for many of us, but I had one match that was really enjoyable and I wanted to share it. Survivors had a bad start but went on to put up a great fight.

As a killer, I found myself playing over 70% my matches in lights out. I usually will play 5-10 matches with a different killer each game, then get off. I also found myself much more immersed, and not focused on the gens, survivor health states, etc, but just playing for the chase. It was much less stressful, and actually felt like I was playing a horror game, not a party game.

I absolutely loved it too, really fabulous mode for killer, that intense listening was really fun. It made injuring a player such an incredible death sentence if they didn't get far enough away I couldn't hear their whimpering, or if they stopped so early they were still bleeding. So happy not to have to deal with SWF or flashlight gangs or DS or whatever other garbage survivor "meta" is.

As a killer main i really enjoyed this mode, especially as pyramid head since it felt like we were trapped in Silent hill.

I enjoyed how useful sound was in this event. Often I could hear survivors before I saw them. This gave a new utility to Plague, Legion and Huntress as they excel at quickly injuring and pressuring injured survivors

Legion was where most of my losses came from, a lot of people talked up Legion but I think that's false mostly, and they're going on KZbinr opinions and don't actually play the character. In Lights Out survivors were always so spread out I'd land the hit from Feral Frenzy and then realize there was nobody else around, so I'd have to cross half the map just to see another pulse and by then it was too late. I found the ability to be mostly useless. Cenobite was my king during this event.

@@onezerotwo Legion felt strong because of their tracking and easy ability to injure survivors and keep them injured. I almost never was able to injure the whole team with the power but I think the strength came from how easy it was to catch one or two survivors by surprise with it. I agree with the Cenobite pick though! He seemed great with survivors not looping as effectively as they usually do

​@@onezerotwo That's Legion's basic weakness. Spreading out will always counter them. Basic positioning isn't a perk, lol, so the same tools that counter them in the regular mode will counter them here too.

I think it'd be sick, when a variant of this mode comes back in the future, if they allowed survivors to bless totems to create illuminated areas inside the boon radius. Just to add some kinda unique light vs darkness gameplay.

Xenomorph was the most fun to play as and against in this mode, just with the turrets giving some agency back to the survivors.

I liked not having to think about perks or addons, it was sooo nice. At the same time, I won almost game I played as killer and lost hard every game as survivor. It didn’t help that people mostly picked killers that are really strong in this mode.

Every single one of my killer games went the exact same: one person died early on, I catch two of them together and hook them both, and then I catch the final person before they got hatch. I played like six or seven lights out games as killer and only one of them went differently, and it was that the final survivor found hatch.

i mustve played at least 20 or 30 matches of lights out and every single one of them was either a 3k or 4k, no joke. Playing as some killers there really isnt much challenge at all. Blight moves too quickly for survivors to react and so doesn’t really have any downsides in the gamemode. Wraith is simply overpowered icl. His only pre chase counterplay no longer exists and its much harder for survivors to locate loops. Getting bodyblocked on a gen isnt even a survivors fault anymore because they simply cant see you coming.

Yeah the event was very killer favored not to say the survivors couldn't win but in soloq was hard as hell with a team it was a challenge I think the event was good though since it's a start for more stuff like this

got from bottom rank all the way to Iri 1 just by using this gamemode alone in half a day, coz I won every single one. not to mention there's entirely no MMR, I was getting a lot of 100-500 hour survivors as compared to the 1000hour and above ones in normal mode after i hit rank 1 I just used the mode to farm BP and let the survs go

I played this mode entirely solo and I loved it, in fact I had pretty much given up DBD until this mode (I played maybe 1-2 matches a month if that) and I am now back to playing DBD daily due to this mode. I get why people hated it but for me it was refreshing and gave me a reason to actually play DBD again even if I died pretty much every time as surv

I played lights out only, I had a lot of fun, I think it would even better if you couldn't see your power on hud, most killers have visual indicatros if they are charged up etc. I really liked that the mode was putting way more of your focus on environment and the details

I played pig for most of it. Its insane how fun it was to switch up targets and do reads on people, especially with the drill melee that has a loud attack noise

i feel its more like a test. its a mode thats rather easy to implement and will cause the least amount of bugs. its like putting the toe into the water to check how warm it is. Lets be optimistic :)

This is by far the easiest LTM they could of done, it's so simple so that's why it's lackluster. Remember that this is their stepping stool to more and great LTMs

0:30 Had a similar thing happen to me,coincidentaly on Lery's too Playing Alien and one of them gave up and offed themselves in a hook,and the other three would gradually disconnect after a painfully long match

i think its not a bad dev direction to try out new stuff, i like if we have modes from time to time that don't have to be seen as competitive as usually. i got spooked a lot in this mode and people were a lot more chill. also i liked that it just went a week and that they put it in a new queue slot and did not replace the normal queue

I remember my best game on survivor was the very first one i played - Duo Queue with ignorant teammates vs. Myers. I beleieve i flashlight and grab saved one of them 3 or 4 times 😂. It was all in good fun though; i ended up getting facecamped in the end because the killer wasnt too happy about me playong super altruistically, but i was his only kill. Best match on killer was one that came after a long string of demo matches on yamaoka (i got the same map 6 times in a row and just stopped playing nicely- primarily by just playing in a comp playstyle because i was bored). It was a group of comp players that i recognized some of the people on their friends lists. Ended up playing it seriously and having a great back and forth with them, and in the end i got everyone. It was a pretty nice boost in confidence that we all took each other seriously and played well, and obviously because i had fun and so did they, i ended up letting the last two survivors out after downing them.

Those guys were cracked for real! As Survivor I found it was the most painful thing ever. As killer it felt way too easy if you played nice (like Otz did here, 12 hook). I usually ended up meming with the survivors One game I did meme too hard as Sadako tho and got destroyed massively though.

Lights out was a breath of fresh air honestly, I found myself actually getting scared as survivor and not being incredibly stressed as killer for the first time is quite a while, I don’t doubt they’ll bring it back but I do wish it stuck around longer

That final survivor might've been going for the achievment "Left For Dead" which is very difficult to get under normal circumstances, requiring you to complete the final generator and escape after everyone else is dead. Very unlikely outcome unless the Killer takes pity on you and lets you leave.

Honestly if they did what they had removed, the offering that changed the lighting, instead of just a fog I think it would’ve been way better. Darkness vs just a black wall with the lighting practically unchanged.

It was a 50% bonus to the most used side, and 150% bonus to the other side. But, with offerings disabled, you couldn't get any additional bp multipliers.

I'm not one to jump on the "killer sided/survivor sided" argument, but this game mode? I don't think I had a single match where all five gens were done. It was a 4k or hatch escape. Every match. I gave up on this game mode so fast.

as a killer i agree it was pretty obviously killer sided. i probably played 100 games as killer during the event - it was extremely easy to find survivors all the time via sounds, but they never had any idea i was coming. they should have made it so survivors did not make any noises while injured.

Honestly, by far the best part of lights out for me was the simple lack of flashlights, being able to pick up a survivor in the open without looking for people saving was so freeing.

i genuinely loved Lights out, it was so much more fun than the regular game. there weren't 1,000 game mechanics to think about, it was just good old fashioned hide and seek. i think they could make it a permanent game mode if they just give survivors a few more extra tools to work with. the killer needs to be slightly less undetectable (they kept running directly into me all the time) and the survivors need to be able to hide a little better (it was extremely easy to find everyone due to injured sounds)

Whilst far from the strongest killer in this mode, I was a HUGE fan of playing Myers!! Getting to check where survivors are by stalking (since you could stalk beyond your view distance), and being able to be in T3 with no terror radius really gave it a jumpscare feeling! I really enjoyed this event overall, I'm excited to see what else comes next! (Also I hope they add the lights out modifier to custom games!!!)

I know that there's some problems and Otz and this team worked together to make this a fun game, but this video honestly looked more fun then normal DBD. Like, besides removing all the annoying meta shit of waiting out dead hard and decisive and all that shit that makes DBD more tedious than intense, I just noticed that the game is so much more quiet. Without a loud noise notification every 5 seconds, the game's audioscape becomes a million times more intense. Just music, screams, pallet drops, and killer noises. It sounds so much more scary. If the base game/killers were more balanced, they spruced up the darkness to be a little more visually appealing/spooky, and they gave survivors a unique tool that only exists in this gamemode (maybe a mode exclusive item or something) I would legitimately think this is the better version of the game (and might actually make me tempted to reinstall).

I really enjoyed playing both killer and soloQ survivor, even if I didn't escape often as survivor. I think the community just seems to be burnt out and jaded in general, I think I was the only person I knew who enjoyed it

i think the mode should have made it so finishing gens lights up parts of the map and slowly unlocks your perks so as the game goes on it ramps up, or even the opposite the survivors are trying to turn off gens and slowly remove perks making it harder and scarier the farther in you are

This mode feels good as a Survivor and a Killer. Long as the Killer is playing for fun and not Tunneling/Camping it brings the Horror aspect to life once more. No more teabagging. No more Locker Stun into Flashbang locks. No more bodyblocking with Endurance. No more 23rd 2nd chance perks. The stress and fear is back baby. Is it Killer-sided? Yes. But it is meant to be. You are called a Survivor for a reason and this mode reminds you what terror is.

I thoroughly enjoyed Lights Out. I’ve played DBD for 3 years now and I felt it was a refreshing and simplistic way to play the game. And I actually had some jump scares which felt good. I hope it stays!

I enjoyed playing killer alot survivor was rough in soloq with a team it was fun but still insanely killer sided not having anything to counter the killer in anyway made the powers of each killer 5x stronger which is fine if they made some of the items a bit more frequent like for instance the flashlights were a great way to fight back and even the playing field but i think in the entire time of the event and atleast 35 games i found a flashlight maybe 4/5 times the majority of the time you would get a toolbox which is cool for gen repair but the sabo boxes were worthless unless your were wasting time following killer because you had no idea were hooks were before the did medkits were good to for the free heal but i think a good change for the future would be instead of locking loadouts out give the survivors a set of loadouts like a healer a gen build a sabo etc and we can pick what we want from those set loadouts idk just a idea

Sadly this time I can't agree with you Otz. This game mode was great for me as solo survivor. First time for a long time I experienced DBD as horror game. I think the biggest issue that people have done (and that's why they disliked this mode) was to experiencing it as regular DBD but darker with no loadout. WRONG. If you treated this mode as new game at all and feel the fear of unknown as survivor you could be really spooked and excited about every match. From k1ller side, my girlfriend for the first time tried new k1llers on this mode and really enjoyed it, because she could try them without counter perks or bots that know everything, only pure power, knowledge and experience that she gained without worry about anything

Is this gamemode perfect? No but i do hope it returns with some slight tweaks. Like say every minute or so you get a flash of aura reading for both sides. Killer sees the survivors while survivors see the killer & teammates. Its just TOO much stripped info and the no perks just is asking for killers to tunnel. Also BHVR, please you should not be able to pip or lose pips in alt gamemodes.

it was already very easy for killers to find survivors as we had permanent gen auras. also i never tunneled once, i hooked everyone once before anyone got a second hook, and i was still able to get a 4k every single time just because of how easy it was to find them

now i dont play dbd anymore but i returned a lil it to try out this mode it has potential to be good i feel like if they made it a rogue like it would be so much cooler, like every so often u get new reworked perks to chose from and they are all a once time use like survivors can get 1 on gen completion can u can only hold onto 1 at a time, and once u use it that ones gone, and maybe 1 on killer hooks

crazy to see ur unable to understand by what im envisioning, ill do a long explanation of what i mean so ur able to envision it as well, imaging going into a match of lights out u complete 1 gen as a survivor (1 hook state as a killer) u then get an option to pull up a 2nd ui and u get to pick a random perk now these perks would be changed to have new lights out mode styled perks doing some unique stuff and these will all be a one time use thing, and u can only hold ontop 1 at a time so u cant stack them up @@coletrainhetrick

@ahrivixen5594 my problem with this idea is that this only further encourages tunneling, this would be lopsided for Killer because less survivors mean stronger Killer and irrelevance having these rogue like abilities. Also by making it so that it's based on guns being finished, this heavily encourages Gen rushing, especially having three survivors on the same gen just to get the first perk as fast as physically possible.

the thing is, nothings already stopping tunneing as is, so that argument doesnt really matter atleast in a rogue like version of lights out where u can pick random one use perks u might get the chacne at something like an improved ds, and thats true however killers would be able to also get their perk equally as fast since it would just be a hook state, which can easily be done, theres fine balance that can be fleshed out, but i think that direction is a much better one overall, then u can toy with things like oh making the first gen take a lil bit longer, adding more hook states to survivors, these are all possibilities (tbh in general i think gens should work like cyphers in identity v moble game even tho the game is trash it has some good stuff to it) @@coletrainhetrick

As someone whos stopped playing the game cause I've not been enjoying the direction of the game, I thought this gamemode looked neat and reminded me of old dbd. Many videos I've seen seem to stress how hard survivor is or that the gamemodes gimmick got old quickly (though to me I think survivor should be hard and not completely team base IMO but that's another discussion). Honestly lights out looks like its the most fair games of dbd since there's no perks and everyone has less information to go off on except for SWFs of course. Maybe the devs should actually rethink how much information they give players in base game cause it feels so saturated like hand holding players often causing players to not concentrate on matches. For example survivors seem to have to be more aware of their surroundings cause there's no terror radius to warn them. Lights out also gave me an idea about how item maybe should be in base game. what if survivors get to bring in items to the trial as normal but instead the item spawns in a chest somewhere on the map? Anyway I hope the devs don't scrap this mode as a throw away experiment and actually build upon it with different iterations.

i actually really liked Lights Out Mode, not because of the undetectable shit, but cause of the lack of perks and items. if they added THAT as a game-mode, id play that a LOT. like yeah some killers are better than others without perks or addons, but in general it felt like when playing either side, i was relying much more on my actual game-sense then anything else to get me through. for Survivor it was tense and rewarding when i looped a killer for 2 or so gens, and for Killer it kinda proved to me that like, i AM a decent killer-main, and that sometimes a survivor team will just bring cracked perks/items that i can't compete with.

i will add whenever i did play survivor in this Game Mode, it was in a SWF. i suppose soloq would've been far more annoying, but that's soloq even with perks.

Funnily enough the mode seems similar to playing old dbd with the dark map lighting and minimal hud info. And to some extent less powerful perks (or in this case none).

I feel like not being able to see gens, hooks, or downed survivor auras would have been a bit more fair since everyone is actually blind.

this game mode actually brought me back to how launch dbd felt, everyone was stumbling around in the dark, game was actually kind of scary, and the game wasnt full of 5 meta loadouts trying to out sweat eachother

this game mode was fun when the killer understood how much of an advantage they had and that they could chill and go for silly plays that would otherwise lose you the game. in my survivor games i mostly hated it and played chill killer games instead that, i think, were fun for everybody

Lacking!? I loved lights out I ranked up a bunch of killers during it. It's so nice not to have to deal with all that survivor bullshit and just play the game. It's the best time I've ever had in dbd as a new player, very very sad it is over. It was funny to see how incompetent they all are at the actual core gameplay without all the crutches that perks are for survivors, I don't need anything to win games on M1 killers if I just play smart and listen, they don't seem to be able to do anything right without their toys. I did get utterly wiped out by a few teams tho, so, there are definitely survivors out there who can play the hell out of DBD, even in the mid-ranks where I am.
