I must say, a lot of your advice has been really helpful over the years (converting hoodies to medieval hoods, proper layering, etc.) My own budget costumes are much richer for having watched your stuff. So thanks mate, and keep doing what you do!

Converting hoodies to medieval hoods? I need to look for that video! Do you remember the name?
@TheMadPoetHimself3 ай бұрын
It's an older one... I believe it's just called "Turning a modern hoodie into a medieval cowl." Really simple guide for a DIY hood (I still get a lot of use out of mine).

Not just the story of the character wearing the costume... but a representation of the originating culture, real or fictional, from which that character hails.
@markfergerson21453 ай бұрын
Yep, at a glance you can say “you’re not from around here, are you?”, plus mismatched “details” like pouches made of different types of leather in different styles (for example) might mark the wearer as someone who travels a lot and has to replace gear at need… or possibly as a thief…
@Non_Descript_Individual3 ай бұрын
@@markfergerson2145 Or, think of a more official-unofficial incognito scenario; In case an an enemy regime might otherwise notice you in their territory in a way that might normally be attention-grabbing, the indecipherable ambiguity to be found in the appearance of a man adorned with all those multicuturally diverse items would effectively obfuscate any clear signs of who he answers to in the carrying out of whatever spy duties he might be sent out to perform (or whatever his clandestine mission might be).

Also, this advice speaks to my old SCAdian heart! Wear. Your. Garb. I'm fortunate that I have a "RenFam" crew who LOVE garbing up and going to events - Pirate's Creed concerts, renfaires, vikingfests, CelticFest, an on an on. I get to wear my garb LOTS.

After having watched the cloak video, I made myself a rawana cloak. This last Wednesday, it was going to rain, and the temperature was going to drop. So, I wore my cloak to work. I also have an orange witch hat. When I got off work, it was raining. I got my purse and backpack on, put my cloak on over it, and my hat. When my coworkers saw me, I got teased about being from Middle Earth. I agreed that I was the tallest in the Shire. And it kept me dry and warm since I lined it with a cheap fleece blanket.

In short, form follows function. Also, great, now I need a ruana cloak.

6:50 I think the long hunters are the best historical example for fantasy adventurers. 17:32 a breastplate should only cover the ribcage. There is a reason why “large plate” brigandines are built the way they are.

I think it would be awesome if you reviewed costumes from medieval movies such as any number of robin hood movies, king Arthur, even a knights tale. Talk about what's historical and what's anachronistic and what works and what doesn't.

I'm glad to have one dense video to go over as a reference, as your videos have helped me think about these things as a fantasy writer. I can't use all of your advice, but the big thing about writing is that you never know what detail is most useful until you're sitting down to write. So, thank you.

There really aren't any LARPs close to me, but we do have a small ren faire nearby. I need to get more garb made and find more venues to wear it. I find your videos super useful, even if they are focused on male characters; the basics still apply.

I haven't gone to a Ren Faire in several years but I'm seriously starting to question "authenticity" with vague fantasy. In my case, I have a wonderful wool Franciscan robe (seriously, I was at one event when the skies poured rain, and the wool was better than a modern rain jacket) , But the question of the "accessories" (do I need a cincture, or a leather belt, or do I need Birkenstock sandals vs. soft sole Medieval looking boots) is something that I really start to think about for the next Ren Faire I might be attending.

This is all such excellent advice, and I'm not disagreeing one bit......but i have to imagine people in the old days probably did wear or carry things simply because they thought they looked cool.....of course i realise relying on that excuse would definitely take away from coherence of your outfit.

I'd love to bring them back in one form or another, but probably not exactly how I was doing them before. They didn't do as well as my normal videos, so the algorithm was actually getting confused, I'd have one video that did very well, and one video that did half as well in the same week, every week.

Also if I could get a discord invite that would be awesome, i tried the and it said expired.

2:28 Interestingly, I've seen women in mideval art with a belt at the hips, and holding a hand bag because pouches will pull your belt down if you have it lower. But I have not seen any men wear it at the hips. So even though ladies have the choice, why choose the one that makes you carry a purse? Embrace the pocket life fellow ladies!!!
