"It would be easier if he hated us", she said. "But he loves us all terribly. And if we go on letting him love us, that love is going to kill us. That is what makes him so dangerous" "Dowry of blood", S. T. Gibson. That quote hit me so hard.

I adore House of Hunger. I thought the "love" wasn't really love. I think the head of the household "made" them love/lust her and created a competition for her love between the bloodmaids for her enjoyment. It was a creative book and definitely went bananas at the end.

Every single one of these is on the top of my TBR! I'm so happy to hear your perspective on all of them. I did actually read the Hacienda, but for me it was an all time fave. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

As much as I loved Our Share Of Night (and thought it was pretty plotty!), it makes sense to me that it wasn’t to your taste since you also didn’t care for Silver Nitrate. Perhaps this is because I read them back to back (and loved both!), but I found them to be very similar vibe-wise, in a way I really relished.

I am heartened by your review of The Reformatory. It’s a January book club selection, and I don’t do horror well. I may give it a try instead of skipping January’s meeting.

I absolutely loved THE HACIENDA! I’m sorry you didn’t like it. I will check out NATURAL BEAUTY, THE REFORMATORY, and a maybe few others. I want to read OUR SHARE OF NIGHT, but I’m intimidated by the length of the book. I read A DOWRY OF BLOOD when it was published by a small press years ago. Not my favorite, but I did love the take on the polyam relationship. NATURAL BEAUTY sounds most interesting of the ones you mentioned that I haven’t read yet! And the FINLEY DONOVAN series! Other Adult horror books by BIPOC authors you might find interesting: WHITE HORSE by Erika Wurth, THE DEVIL TAKES YOU HOME by Gabino Iglesias, and CHLORINE by Jade Song.

What about House of Hollow? I absolutely loved it and I also listened to it on Audible and I really loved the narrator’s accent.

Mariana Enriquez is such a fantastic writer, but damn that book was so boring. It was marketed to me as the greatest, scariest horror novel of all time. But I ended up snoring throughout the entire thing.
