Very nicely done. Don't be afraid to stray from diatonic chords though. Your resolutions can be much more impactful if you lead into them with some dissonance.

In case that is too complex or you don’t understand, adding in extensions such as the 7th, or 7 with a flat 9th, or bringing in diminished chords are a few greater ways to add or build tension before a resolution.

This was lovely. You clearly have great potential :) Just a detail in case you didn't know: waltzes musical phrases develop every 4 measures. If you take a Chopin waltz, let's say his Op. 18 No. 1, it has a 4-measure introduction, then he goes up in 4 measures, goes down in 4 measures, and so on. This is very characteristic in waltzes and you shound try to male your musical phrases 4 measures in length.

As a 19 year old composer this is some very solid stuff for your age! You have a nice sense of form and variation, and your understanding of dynamic tension is very clear. A few notes of my own that could help in future pieces: I think you have the capability to explore more harmonically, you demonstrate the ability to understand modulation and voice leading in measures 28-31, try to expand out of that into some more key centers possibly. No need to change key signatures unless it helps you understand it conceptually. I like the moments like measure 12, it stands out most the first time, and i think you could have a much more dramatic build by having these smaller cadenzas like that in the middle of pieces in a chopin or lisztian way. The pedal per measure can get a little repetitive, try to experiment with even just a staccato variant of the basic waltz you establish. Similarly, varying the waltz by changing the voicings of your chords could do some good to create some movement. Keep up the good work and don't let people dissuade you from delving into composition 🙏

Really like the melancholic, sentimental flavour of the waltz without being overblown. Em is one of my fav keys. This is rather accomplished for a 14-yr-old. You clearly have the potential! Keep it up and keep composing!

very beautiful! i have been composing for years and years now and i say your style has a lot of potential. in a personal opinion of mine, tension through dissonance is a huge emotional factor in music, especially when it climaxes and resolves into a harmonic phrase. i could see a lot of emotional moments and tears in your style with that factor, seeing as it already is very musical and melodic. this is a very beautiful piece, thank you for sharing!

This is awesome dude! I really like the flourishes of 32nd notes and the chromaticism at 28. The main theme great and I like how you sped it up during the middle part. The only thing I will say is I dont think there is much form? Also, that accel. at the end should be changed to a rit. but you probably knew that already. Finally, I think it's a bit unnecessary to have dynamic markings on both hands. Anyways, this is really good especially at 14 years old and im excited to see what you write next!

Study Ebenezer Prout's "Harmony: its theory and practice" 16th impression or later, and diligently complete every exercise within, also have by the side "analytical key to harmony:etc" which is a rare case of every exercise being completed by the author himself, it'll hreatly aid you in understanding harmony, and eliminating your flaws, by directly comparing yourself to someone who is better for every step of the way. I recommend you minimize composing while studying it, as in your current state, you are at great risk of developing bad habits and training your ear to accept mistakes as acceptable. I also recommend you learn chromatic solfege, and that you study hard to recognize tonal center by ear using it, as that is the most important skill a composer could have. As you are still young, you are blessed with time, I recommend you utilize that by not rushing too much, you don't need to be a good composer immediately, instead take your time to hone your skill until you become a great composer instead.

Nicely done. It's a good melody. I have a few suggestions, maybe you'll love them. I think that you make the proportions a bit better next time. It feels a bit suffocated, maybetry making measure 15 a half note and a quarter note instead of simply quarters. Try adding 4 more measures after measure 17, It will make the build up a bit more satisfying in my opinion.

Constructive criticism for most of your pieces I’ve heard. 1. Please don’t always clutch to the tonic in your pieces and try to find harmonic development. Staying in one place, repeating mostly the same idea over and over gets very repetitive and boring. 2. I get for most composers bad ideas need to be made for good ones too come later, but I think trying to find some more interesting now melodies would definitely make the pieces well.. more interesting. 3. Don’t just base most of the piece on one idea. Leave room for other ideas and possible development. This will give your pieces balance. 4. Again to try and make your pieces better, disassociate with typical and very predictable progressions that don’t lead anywhere. Instead try and create direction in your pieces.

i didnt feel the development to bigger chords and octaves, with the accents, accelerando, and fortissimo were as impactful you wanted them to be. thats not to say the idea isnt there and obvious, but instead that its left feeling to me a little straightforward and its power is weak. maybe you could consider somehow building up to it more or using some dissonance as other users have suggested. personally, i struggle alot with keeping them from being plain, and its the texture that i struggle with. something that helps me is looking at what older and well accomplished composers do to make texture. i dont mean youd have to get down in the weeds too much and 'study' the scores (though you could if you want, i myself struggle with that) but find a part of a composition you love and try to see what the composer does to make it something other than the skeleton its built around and try to bend those same techniques around parts of your composition. i find its much easier to grow your 'composing toolbox' when you can collect *real* experience through doing hands on things like this as opposed to reading textbooks (for me at least). i hope you take my solicitation lightly and that its helpful
