Looks like we have the same taste in books! I released my top 10 out of 249 books I read this year. I'm so glad I found your channel! You have some books that I hadn't heard of! ☺

oh boy... I'm genuinely glad The Courage to Be Disliked had such a positive impact on you, but I had the complete opposite experience. while I appreciated pieces of it (mostly the things you touched on in this video), I found a lot of the larger ideas incredibly offensive, like the assertions that trauma and depression aren't real, messaging that was... absolutely wild to be reading in 2024. the victim blaming tone of those sections REALLY rubbed me the wrong way, and the fact that the authors' assertions are based on extremely outdated ideas in the field of psychology was baffling to me. the originator of these ideas (Alfred Adler) died almost 90 years ago, so it makes sense for them to be outdated; what doesn't make sense to me is 2 modern authors presenting those ideas as if they're based in current science and understanding, when they absolutely are not. the "Japanese phenomenon" tagline also feels very disengenuous to me since Adlerian psychology is 100% Western, not Japanese in the slightest (it just recently became popular in Japan thanks to authors like this). I don't know... aside from a few bits of good advice, I overall found this book a very degrading experience unfortunately. we know now from modern science that trauma literally alters the human brain's physical structure and functionality; if these authors have never had to experience the devastation of what that's like, or the incredibly complex road that healing from severe trauma is, that's great for them, but writing a book about how that means trauma isn't real and that you can simply "choose happiness" instead of clinical depression was an unhinged choice. I honestly wish I hadn't read this 😬

Ill be honest, the 'Japanese phenomenon' tagline had me raising my eyebrow too considering it was all about Adlerian psychology, seemed like they were jumping on a marketing bandwagon.. I also find that self help style books are almost always like panning for gold, you have to sift through some dirt to find real valuable pieces of info, i've never seen a SH book with 100% good takes either tbh, you just have to be willing to take what hits and leave what doesn't i suppose :/ sooo many of them approach topics like trauma from a 'you aren't always in control of your reality but you are always in control of your mindset' standpoint - i think this is the thing that either resonates or puts people off depending on how they've personally received and dealt with trauma - "you're in control of your own happiness/ trauma doesn't have to define you forever" is a great message in theory but definitely a very oversimplified way of looking at it since it doesn't consider how severe trauma can actually rewire the brain outside of that persons control, so i think it really comes down to the reader's discernment to take what can be useful to them and ignore that which clearly isn't

Omg yes, I had to DNF this book for the same reason. The bits about trauma made me so angry

I appreciate that this might sound quite dense but I wondered if you would be able to make a video for those who are struggling to get into reading, given that we now live in a world completely dominated by short form media that kills every last brain cell. I really love the idea of adding reading to my life and routine but honestly feel overwhelmed by all the books available and the mere idea of trying to concentrate for more than 5 seconds.

I think I DNF'd that book about being disliked because I felt he disregarded or downplayed the role that mental and/or physical illness can have on our ability to achieve things. It was a while ago though so I'm not sure. I just remember that some aspects really didn’t gel with me 😅

nooo not milk fed 😭 i absolutely agree that the protagonist was not a good person but i loved the story. i think some people just enjoy reading despicable female protagonists (rest and relaxation, how to k your family, a certain hunger etc) and some don't and that's fine
