An awesome post Andy! Been there.....many many many years ago. So far down in the dumps that I was parked on the side of a country road with a handgun. Sitting there wondering why I should continue on. Marriage was shot, just lost my dad, job was coming to an end..."why bother, no one will care" And what stopped me?......the sunrise came up over the horizon. Sounds hokey, but its true. I figured something or someone was telling me in its own way that things will get better. Threw the gun in the swamp beside the road and went home. That same day I went to my doctor and got a lot of help. Theres always a glimmer of hope, nothing is ever that dark that you need to "check out" like I thought that day.

Andy. I am from a previous existence a Qualified engineer. More recently... Like the last 25 years, I have worked as a Psychiatric nurse. So I feel qualified. It appears Delboi knows nothing about either profession. His mechanical advice is at best sloppy and at worst dangerous. His spouting off about mental health is a true measure of the person. I have not followed all of these wrangles with his channel but I do recall him throwing his wife's own angst and suffering out there, when he felt under attack. I would expect a decent human being to know better. He should be ashamed of himself. Also.. The Black Dog. He was a frequent visitor to my own life until my early 50's... The comments about him having more subscribers raises other issues. It means bad advice is getting out there more often than SOUND technical knowledge. He may be happy and content to spend his life polishing his turds but I enjoy content which demonstrates an high level of skill and Craftsmanship. Peter Anderson is another antipodean who puts lots of thought and skill into his content... Must be something in the water down there.

I lived with my family in four countries in the world, raised two sons, one an aircraft engineer, one a degrees professional, currently doing a second degree. I have three beautiful grand children. My point is that, these issues are not a death sentence, the problem can be if it's not managed, be it self managed or through outside intervention. Lucky for me I am strong enough to self manage mine. Anyone who is not managing, or is perceived to be not managing needs to reach out for help. It is there, we all need to help each other. But as someone who uses an obsession with motorcycles to beat an obsession with alcohol caused by a life that was full of anxiety and depression caused by a disfuctional upbringing, your channel has helped. It's dealing with th real that gets us through. KZbin is great for this. Real people, passing on hard won experience, without any of th tinsel we have on th box. Your channel is a creative act, and needs an audience to complete th circuit. I watch because I can see you understand life's ups and downs. But an obsession can be terribly distructive if its allowed free rien. Interesting to see other posts about DBs supposed sanity. I am a Clinical Psychologist, and this short article that I published may help some. Depression The word ‘depression’ is very confusing. It can mean sadness, as when your faithful dog dies or your spouse leaves you, or it can mean something much more sinister - a feeling of absolute hopelessness with no future to look forward to. Sadness is natural after a significant loss, but it is usually short in duration and after a grieving process it fades away. However, when your world is black, where you see no future, when you have no energy, and there is no hope then we are talking about what the medical model calls ‘clinical depression’. Of course, depression is a ‘painted’ word. What I mean by this is that when your doctor tells you that you are suffering from depression then at a conscious and subconscious level you amplify the symptoms that you believe that you should have to fit this diagnosis. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. We focus on what we believe depression is and amplify these feelings. In the not too distant past there was no depression. The doctor would say that you were melancholic, or suffering from melancholy. The change in name came about when the pharmaceutical companies started to promote anti-depressants (anti-melancholy does not have the same impact, does it?). Depression is not a genetic illness, neither is it a biological disease. The increase in the rate of depression revealed in studies shows that depression cannot be a biological disease carried in our genes. Genes do not change that quickly. Despite the explosion in genetic research and gene mapping, and high hopes of finding a gene for everything, no 'depression gene' has been found. Neither is depression caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. This is why antidepressants are so poor at treating it. That people with depression have a chemical imbalance is not in dispute, but it is the depression that causes the imbalance, not the other way around. Depression is not an event; it is the result of an often lengthy process. A typical depressed client has a history of stress, along with a number of emotional challenges or frustrations that have not been satisfactorily resolved. Our minds do not like unresolved challenges and will often generate urges or desires to distract its self from the real issues. For instance, some people turn to food for comfort, and the more they eat the fatter they get. And as they become overweight they become unhappy with their obesity and yet they continue to eat. This is why diets don’t work! The desire to overeat is driven by unhealthy emotions at the subconscious level, and if these emotions are not resolved then the cycle continues. Myths about Depression Myth 1: People who become depressed have weak characters. Some of the strongest people in history have suffered from depression: Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemmingway, John Keats, Martin Luther, Mozart, Nietzsche, Tolstoy, Mark Twain, Van Gogh, and many more. Myth 2: Depression is shared equally by both sexes. Depression is diagnosed in about twice as many women as men, though some of this difference may result from men’s reluctance to seek treatment. Myth 3: Your age has nothing to do with your likelihood of becoming depressed. Individuals thirty to forty years of age are most likely to get their first major depressive episode, although depression can also show up in children and the elderly. Myth 4: Depression does not destroy your desire for sexual romance. Major depression can disrupt the normal functions of your body, causing decreased sexual interest and hormonal changes, as well as an increase in headaches, joint pain, muscle pain, stomach aches, and digestive problems. Myth 5: You can be treated effectively for depression by the use of medication. Even the most modern antidepressants (SNRIs) have a poor profile for relieving the symptoms of depression; and some studies indicate that they may be no more effective than placebo. Unwanted side-effects include: Nausea, Dry mouth, Dizziness, Insomnia, Sleepiness, Constipation, Increased blood pressure, Excessive sweating, Tremor, Headache, Agitation, Muscle weakness. For many, the side-effects are as bad as or worse than the symptoms of the depression. Please note, if you or a friend are currently taking antidepressants you should never just stop taking them. They do have an effect on the brain and it may be better to slowly reduce the dosage over time. Always check with your doctor first. How you can help a depressed person? Never tell a depressed person to ‘Pull yourself together’, or similar; for it’s pointless and negative. It’s assuming that the person has control over their mood or emotions and this is not the case. Instead, you must provide them with love and respect, for they require reassurance. If the depressed person expresses behaviour or communication that they may be considering suicide or self-harm, then you must seek professional help as soon as possible. Never assume that the person is bluffing or seeking attention. If they are seeing a doctor or therapist then talk to their carer and see how you can help. Therapy is often more successful when a team effort. Remind the person that their negative emotions are transitory. Negative thoughts, just like positive ones are never constant. They do rise and fall. How can a psychotherapist help with depression? This depends upon the severity of the condition and how many associated psychological challenges accompany it. Mild to moderate depression can be relieved relatively quickly with a combination of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) supported by hypnosis. Severe depression, especially if there is suicidal ideation will take longer, and the therapist will often work with the referring physician. CBT can be very effective at changing abnormal responses and behaviour. Ultimately, how we respond to thoughts, perceptions, and events is based on what we believe. If we have flawed beliefs, then it follows that our responding behaviour will be flawed. By identifying the problematic beliefs and correcting them we resolve the response issues.

The way youtube is getting, it doesn't really freaking matter how many subscribers you have-quality over quantity. Your video a few years ago over getting an XS11's transmission apart was my lifesaver that gave me the confidence to do it myself. (I'd NEVER taken a gearbox apart.) You also responded and helped me keep cool during the re-assembly process that can be a PITA getting the shift forks back in place. Today's society of instant gratification and shallowness is creating a plague of depression since many people don't have a conduit to ground themselves. I have my faith-and it also helps to just throw yourself into something that keeps your hands and your mind busy. Motorcycles are perfect for this!

Hey Andy, Back in 2007 my back broke itself! I was diagnosed with degenarative spine syndrome (whatever the fuck that is!).. I had a major opp to repair it and by 2009 i managed to learn to walk again.. Then because of all the strain i put my body through i gave myself a massive hernia and had another opp for that!! Then a year after that i was told i had Skin Cancer!! So even more opp's for that, to be told that luckily it hadn't spread.. and.. After all that shit i was then diagnosed with some shit called Sarcoidosis.. as well as Ostio Arthritis! So i thought Fuckitall and went back to work! I lasted 2 years there!! Until my back fucked itself again!! and was told i couldn't have another opp because there was too much scar tissue and it would fuck me perminently! And as if all that wasnt enough... This time last year i ended up in a Coma in hospital and when i woke up i was told ive contracted some rare kind of Type One Diabetes.. Which is trying to kill me on a daily basis!! Then.... Quite unexpectedly! I went to try and stop my Daughter's Steroid & Cocain fueled Ex Boyfriend from hitting the shit out of her and He turned on me, thus putting me in hospital with a mild heart attack and some nice cuts and bruises!! So.. To say my health is a bit on the Fucked side at the moment would be an understatement!! lol.! I have (at the last count) 17 bikes... (they make me happy!).. Some of them are in bits down the garage, some are in my house! Every day i wake up i try my best to at least get down the garage, even if its to sit there in absolute fucking agony (I do a hell of a lot of Meds!!) and try to fix something.. Or i sit here and watch the likes of Your good self, Matt from the Workshop and a few others and it gives me a much needed smile! So Thanks for that mate.. Depression can be a right cunt when it wants to be..The best meds for it are Loads of Motorbikes!! Trust me.... Its true.!! Thanks Andy...

I know I'm late to the party, but the reason I watch you and Mat at the workshop is because the information is correct and the fundamental engineering knowledge is bang on. Its said a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, and this basically describes youtube. I read some of the comments in the video this is about and the negative ones had nothing to do with engineering or mechanics. That in itself speaks volumes. As you say, books are a good reference source but we now live in an age where this is pretty much undermined. I still remember my metal work classes at school, where I made a chisel and that encompassed fundamental principles of metallurgy which where the starting point of higher education. That has been lost to kids attending school now. There is a legitimacy of knowledge which has been completely eroded by the availability of the likes of KZbin where anyone can spout crap and not be held to account. My qualifications (motor tecnition, City and Guilds) mean that if I get it seriously wrong and someone gets hurt or worse, I can be imprisoned. My knowledge is supposed to keep people safe. KZbin is just, at its worst, opinions. The problem is that its human nature to agree with whatever you may think is true in your own mind to begin with, hence 'I can't see a curve on the horizon, so the globe must be flat'..... And ego steps in and says 'I'm right, I knew it all along, and this intelligent sounding dude just CONfirmed it on KZbin'. I'm not as thick skinned as you, so I don't really post in this bullshit producing platform. I'm glad you and Mat do tho....

GDay Andy, thankyou for having the courage to talk about mental health issues and raising peoples awareness of them, my wife Jackie has fibromyalgia and depression and anxiety and ptsd sort of come along with it, I suffer with chronic fatigue depression and anxiety and probably ptsd aswell, life takes its toll on all of us in one way or another, I look at it from a bike perspective(bikes are far more than a grouping of mechanical parts and things)if our bikes need a service we make sure we get it done, if we recognise they aren't running rite or making a different noise we investigate and repair it, if unfortunately we drop our bikes we fully investigate and repair them accordingly not just ride on with the she will be rite attitude, not just wash and polish our pride and joy, we worry about what's going on, on the inside, thats what we have found with our conditions, is that for our ages and mileage we sort of look alright on the outside, my wife more than me of cause, and most people don't see what's going on inside with us, but if we see someone with a broken leg or arm etc, its pretty obvious somethings not rite and people will generally help accordingly, I think we all need to slow down a bit(not on our bikes of course) and check on each other a bit more, Jackie and I have 5 acres in Katanning WA, but this is TOO much for us to maintain now so we are in the process of downsizing and moving to Albany WA, we are trying to alleviate as much stress in our lives, mental and physical, and only leaving the healthy stress whatever that is, like healthy cholesterol? Anyhow back to the bike stuff and once again thanks for all you do on your channel, God Bless and Love and havagreatday Bruce and Jackie Johnston.ps Love the Hats

I can tell you from experience it's not always shit. Things get better even if there isn't a straight up cure. The hypocrisy of this bus driving twat knows no bounds. Bashing the shit out of his head stock. The whole lesson on the syncro bandit gear box lmao. The evidence is endless. A question mate have you ever had to deal with a patient with steel lodged in their eye? Harding of screwdrivers dangerous that's basic physics. In 1987 my cousin drove to Devon one summer night, sat at a popular view point looking out to sea, ran a hose from the exhaust through to the window, sat in the car and started the engine. He was found dead the next morning. He was 25 years old. He left a note to explain why he decided to bail out of life. He always seemed joking and cheerful but this was that "put on a brave face and pull yourself together" act that depressed people perform because they believe that nobody wants to help them, or worst still, give them a damaging insensitive uncompassionate lecture along the lines of Ralph McTell's "Streets of London" song, to give them a guilt trip for suffering from depression. The effect on the family was devastating. His mother, my aunt, went on to work for the Samaritans for a few years.

I've never been one to show weakness although I probably have more weaknesses (both physically and mentally) than most and mental health has grabbed me in the past and I still get anxiety every day, I'm not moaning about it, never have but I deal with it as best I can and I'm sure you do too Andy. What we have proof of is that Delboy's channel, although presented quite well (better if he removed that smug self important smirk off his face) is largely a 'Misinformation Channel' thereby only of use as a source of mild entertainment to those 'in the know' who are strong enough to stay awake in the face of extreme boredom, (something I haven't managed yet)..... or the masses of 'spanner keen' people looking for that quick weekend service on their bikes. Fair enough 'til Delboy's Garage tries to impart more advanced knowledge in furtherance to KZbin's success ladder, the cracks show, the misinformation gets more serious yet by 'careful channel control' he can advance to his perceived 'Higher Level'. It's obviously very important to him and I wish him good luck in his search for that hallowed glowing halo but don't mock someone's mental or physical health as a tool to get there because the head of that axe is very loose indeed.

Been slowly raising awareness of the existence of the Black Dog Institute here in the UK, letting people know what the patch and badge, that I wear all the time , mean. Already had a couple of people say to me that just knowing that someone is prepared to listen to them is a great help. As for DB, I was made aware of his cringe worthy channel by Matt on The Workshop due to the Evans coolant fiasco. As an engineer and machinist for over 30 years in the motorsprt industry,I find DB lacking in basic understanding of engineering principles. If he understood he would not make alot of the comments he makes. What I find more worrying is the poor advice he is passing on to people that don't know any better, who also believe they can do mods and maintaince on their bikes.Example, video i saw today, using general purpose grease on stainless bolts into ally head, instead of using an antiseize product. After spending '2 weeks' getting the exhaust 'stems'(not studs) out,and cleaning the threads out he puts grease in. Top job!

I have learned plenty of other thing's from his video's and I appreciate the effort that he put's into his video's. I do, however, understand the frustration of seeing something that seem's wrong, commenting on it and then being villified, by people who are only interested in their version of the truth, because they believe that will make them monetarily richer. In that situation, I wonder which one of us has the mental health problem?

The issues have a lot of history. I can’t understand why people think I stand to gain from this. Surely if I wanted to ride his coattails, his words not mine, I would be sucking up to him. But he has publicly stated that he is a mechanic with 37 years experience, owned a number of bike shops etc etc. It is so blatantly obvious that is is pure fantasy that when I see the lack of ability and understanding of the most basic things it makes my blood boil to know that he is deceiving his viewers and providing inaccurate information under the guise of training, which is what he is delivering whether he admits it or not.

As a person who has suffered from depression since the age of 15 , and will struggle with it until the day I die, I have had a lot of time to learn that how a person treats others with mental illness says a lot about their true nature. Having witnessed DelBalls behavior through your own interactions, Matt's hilarious encounters at The Workshop, and his own videos, I can safely state that Delballs suffers from a mental illness too, and it manifests itself as a classic case of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
