The same thing happens with Cold steel knives and their Secure Ex sheaths, made of glass reinforced nylon called FRN or Zytel. The glass particules are harder than steel and the friction dulls any blade. I made mods on my secure ex disassembling them and putting a leather strip inside where the edge touches the sheath.

There's nothing wrong with the knife. It's an excellent blade! Have a custom leather sheath made for it.

Thanks for the info about the sheath. This was on my WTB list until hearing about the sheath. 😢

I truly believe when you Buy a new Knife and especially above the 100 dollar price point you should ABSOLUTELY be able to use it right outta the Box, I purchased a RAT-3 last year and it ha a Butter spreading edge on it and I had to sharpen it immediately before usage on anything other than Toast. The RAT was only 50 bucks though in 1095 steel which I really like and right behind 154cm. Cool Video my friend Semper Fidelis

The factory edge on most knives aren't keen enough . My Cold steel SRK san mi 111, was pants ,but the SK5 variant was razor Lion steel ,fällkniven, Bark River razor like knives I could shave with them .

Wrap the knife in sandpaper and slide it in and out of the sheath. It will rough up the inside giving it a better surface to glide along at the edge. Because the surface at the edge is smooth. Meaning there is more surface area to catch along the edge. Therefore dulling the blade. Additionally. You could just sand down the edge line of the sheath. To make sure that the edge is not contacting with the sheath it self. All you need is a bit of double stick tape and some sand paper.

Before you complain about edge retention did you try sharpening it about 4 times. it's been proven that factory sharpening can burn the edge. Vg10 is a very good steel for this type of knife. People have used it for years until the super steel crazy started. I prefer tough over chippy take a few hours to sharpen on special equipment. I believe people that don't really use stuff repeat lies they hear on social media. Suddenly people believe they are true. I'll take easy to sharpen over super edge retention. In my experience every super hard steel I've used is just gimmick for charging more money. I wonder how many people really carry and use $200+ knives? I bet not as many as make statements and get offended on KZbin. I really do like this design really very useful just not easy to carry when your a short guy.

I appreciate your comment. And to answer your question: I’ve owned a knife for 5 years and I’ve sharpened it hundreds of times. But I will try again. I like the knife and VG-10.

Lol, I used to be exactly in the same spot @ 9:25 ... I sent my first one back cuz I thought it was soft (more than a decade ago) but then I missed the actual blade. It feels amazing- the balance, the control. So I bought another... Anyway, YES, the sheath is the culprit, dulling your edge just like the Cold Steel secure-ex sheaths. Use it on a cutting board and the edge will do fine. Glass filled nylon sheaths destroy edges.

Went ahead and ordered the knife. For me, it's a perfect fixed blade martial EDC. Making a custom Kydex sheath for it is an easy fix and worth it, in my humble opinion... Good video too btw!

Have had mine for close to 10 years now and all of your experiences with it I have. Very difficult to get a good edge and the damn sheath dulls the edge. I thought I was crazy lol. I'd spend what would seem like forever to put a hair popping edge on it and all of a sudden it would be dull.

No issues with mine, ended up getting another sheath anyway. The sheath from the factory is made from a injected nylon glass material it will dull your blades just like the cold steel sheaths.

You're not alone, I got one a few months ago and reprofiled to 30 per side on a Worksharp elite and I have the same issue. It's constantly dull and you're the first review to say so. Ive been wondering what was wrong using it so little but after spending an hour+ sharpening, only to have it struggle with everything but tape pisses me off, especially at $120 (also from a authorized dealer). I still carry it, except I exchanged the g slip for the tech lock on my Bastinelli Mako so I could wear it canted left hand @ 8 o'clock. I guess I'll just toss it in the case with the rest and carry my newest fixed blade....A Microtech Socom Alpha in M390 (which has also strangely went from hair popping to not hair popping from only resheathing). Maybe I'll just stick to my Crkt Minimalists so I can spend the 30 secs a day to get them razor sharp again? Idk. Great review. Subbed.

Yeah, this sheath sucks. I had this problem with basically all these glassfilled plastic sheaths. Exactly this knife's, cold steels, beckers. All those sheaths are detrimental as fcuk. I have no idea, why they still use this material. Make yourself a kydex one.

That SUCKS about the sheath! But Spyderco SUCKS AT MAKING SHEATHS. I just made a replacement in kydex for my Subway Bowie, and I had to do so for my Enuff and Swick, as well. The retention SUCKED.

@@knifedr.3689 Thanks. As for street bowie and stock sheath situation: 1. with any fixed blade you can draw and re-sheath the knife while applying light pressure towards the spine. That should let you avoid this issue completely; 2. If this is a blade used for self defense, how often are you actually drawing the blade ? I think the design itself will hold its own in self defense no matter what edge it has in my opinion (for example - you dont have time for self defense to draw like mentioned it No 1. but it should still work great for combat); 3. obviously for its price it should work no matter what and this sheath is just not optimal.

For combat blade my two suggestions are xl vaquero serrated, or the large G10 Espada. Both are the best pocket sword you can find and can carry even in gym shorts in Florida. I know because I have. Fix blade are nice but reach is more important. The vaquero is like carrying a knife with over a foot of reach in a very small package. Just remember Lynn Thompson carried a vaquero. He's one of the only knife designers that really trained with his designs. Plus he has trained with the best alive. Even if you don't like him you can respect the level of training he has.

For fixed blades, I like a 4 inch blade that's good for piercing. I love my Tops Lions Toothpick and my Bastinelli Silence Slim. For folding knives- the cold steel voyager or frenzy.

Do you know a company that would make specific sheaths specific to the type of knife you have: also according to the company you bought it at like spyderco?
