The scene in the basement between Buffy and Spike really highlighted something important: before his soul, Spike was EVIL. Abstractly, obviously we all knew that, but Spike was painted as such a sympathetic character. He was in love with Buffy, protected Dawn, and was shown to be goofy at times and even helpful to the gang, if begrudgingly. But he was still evil. It just wasn't shown on screen which is part of why Seeing Red was so disturbing. Him referencing what he had done to girls "Dawn's age" and how he liked his victims to cry when he abused them shows more than just killing for blood. He hurt them and was sadistic about it -- and what he almost did to Buffy, he also did to other girls less fortunate. Just like Angelus. But that's NOT who he is with a soul. For this reason, it's easy for me to put a divide between Spike with and without a soul. People hate him for what he tried to do to Buffy (which I understand. I still fast-forward that scene when watching the episode) and yet, they don't hold what Angelus did against Angel. Both were the worst of the worst as far as vampires go. If Angel deserves redemption (and he does. I love Angel! I actually prefer him to Spike), then so does Spike. Just something to think about.
@Girl4Music Жыл бұрын
Well, Willow, who has a soul, who is even human, she’s also very sadistic. Her soulless vampire self is even more so. It’s not that I don’t agree that Spike is or can be too. It’s that I just don’t think that being ensouled/soulless really makes a damn bit of difference when it comes to him. I think he can be that evil/good regardless whether he has a soul or not. I don’t think it’s all that significant. And you said it yourself with Angel. If it really was about the soul, why is it Angel informs Angelus/Angelus informs Angel? If it’s demonic possession, then how can he/they/it/whatever, experience the other? It just makes no sense to me because demonic possession doesn’t work like that. Demonic corruption can… but that’s something else entirely to what they trying to convince you a vampire is. Demonic corruption is about the person. The human what once was. And with Spike especially - his human informs him so much more than his demon ever does. Yet he is supposedly not “William” anymore. It’s confusing and frustrating that half the lore contradicts the other half of it depending on which “vampire/demon” it is. And this only ever matters with the significant vampires. Your average patrol kill? Not even a thought. If it’s really demonic possession that’s happening then Spike shouldn’t just have the acknowledgement of lack of self-awareness as a soulless vampire when ensouled. He shouldn’t have any awareness of anything his soulless self did whatsoever. He shouldn’t even be PRESENT in the experience of it. But it’s precisely because HE IS why he even has a soul now to begin with. 🥴 that’s how much the “soul” doesn’t even matter with him ‘cause odds are he’d still be the same way with/without it and then the Angel/Angelus dichotomy doesn’t make sense. It’s some wonky ass lore. It really is.

@@sirmoonslosthismind there’s nothing realistic about this show’s vampire/demon lore. It’s a supernatural show. The rules in it do not apply to real life in any way, shape or form. There’s been debate after debate about this subject: especially Spike VS Angel so it’s not just me that thinks this way.

@@Girl4Music I think of this way. >Humans are born with a soul. As such, doing the right thing comes naturally. They need incentives to do the right things. >Spike's personality of "needing to be loved" (by family, friends, and in relationships) stayed with him even when he was turned. Really beginning to heat up now, with Warren appearing again to Andrew to try and manipulate him, and Quentin Travers looking for Giles too. Funny when Willow confronts Andrew and brings him back to the house, with Anya reveling in the 'good cop, bad cop' scenario with Andrew. Interesting scene with Buffy feeding the bag of blood to Spike, she did the same in S4 Something Blue, that time with disdain and reluctantly, this time we can see by her facial expressions she really cares that Spike makes a recovery. Spike and Buffy have a real conversation about feelings and her attitude to life now, we can see these are now on a different level, so much more meaningful. Great scene when Spike grabs Andrew through the wall and bites him. Xander works out that the song is 'the trigger' to Spike's behaviour. Again the way the writers are using Principal Wood, we just know there is more to him. When Spike is chained in the basement he tells Buffy of how cruel he could be as vampire, which is hard for her to listen to. However, Buffy knows deep down that Spike has changed, and gives a great speech to him telling him this. Then of course we see the Shrouded attackers break into the house, and Spike has now gone missing too. Buffy eventually make the connection to have fought them before, which she did back in S3 and realises it is The First Evil. The Watchers Council prepare to the attack, but are blown to pieces. So now Buffy is alone in this fight. Great last scene where Spike is on a type of crucifix and is bled to open the Hellmouth and the form of Buffy says 'want to see what a real vampire looks like' Another great episode Building towards the Show Finale.
