I've been homeless. It's worse than you can imagine, especially if it's winter. Shelters are always filled and if you get a flu, get ready to DIE. Your imagination usually exaggerates, but in this case, it probably underestimates. On top of all the horrible experiences, you also learn how little people care about you. As Louis C.K. said, "learning who your real friends are is a HORRIBLE experience"! It's even worse when you figure out that no one is your friend. Your imagination can't understand what it's like to sleep behind someone's business on a smelly couch some other homeless guy used, unsure of if you'll get arrested for trespassing. Your imagination can't understand what it's like to be stranded and starving, to the point you break into a fairgrounds restaurant to find food, only to find a can of coke and drink that, because it's better than nothing. Your imagination can't understand windchill factor -20F. It can't understand the feeling of, "we don't have any space". The sinking feeling in your heart, when you think you're done for. This is it. This is the ditch you die in.
@hwilliampolenz67135 жыл бұрын
@@manictiger A tip, I used to work at a 7-11 and they throw out a TON of food that would otherwise be edible (for reasons of "freshness"). I used to take home a bunch of free food each night instead of throwing it out (with the owner's consent, of course). Now, I'm not saying you should go dumpster diving at a 7-11, but that's what I would probably do if I had to. Another note, Seneca the Younger had recommended pushing yourself as low as you can, ie, going homeless for a while, just to practice it. The idea is that if you can survive without your normal dependencies then you will be that much stronger and that much more prepared for the inevitable slings and arrows of life.
@manictiger5 жыл бұрын
@@hwilliampolenz6713 At the time, I was WAY too far away from any restaurants, where people usually leave food out. It was also down-pouring. Not only did I need food, but I needed a roof. I wound up sleeping in an animal stable, because it was the least likely location to get me caught. I figured someone might be back for that cooler full of sodas, so sleeping in that restaurant would be a terrible idea. That was day 1. I didn't even know about shelters at the time, but if I did, I still wouldn't have been able to make the distance without getting severe hypothermia.

Hi Josh, Man, I really love your channel, I just discovered you today but I really like your calmness and how you offer the voice of logic, in today’s as you may already know, many people are in fact reacting emotionally rather than logically with whatever situation or conversation they may be in, reacting emotionally is never helpful for anyone as it never solves anything. I’m a gay guy so don’t freak out on me LOL, I know you’re not gay but man, so far, I literally love everything you are seemingly about, your calmness, cool, collective and have a depth to you that I really admire and like, unfortunately, these traits are not often found in many people these days and I find this especially true in the gay community, I actually despise the gay community because it’s all so phony and pretentious, for the most part the gay community has very little depth to it and I am a man who needs substance and meaning, I’m not meaning to blanket statement everyone and put them in the same category, but from my personal experience, it has a lot of growing up to do. Anyway, again, I know you’re not gay and that’s cool, but I can still appreciate and admire you just the same, from everything I have heard from you, in my eyes, you are absolutely perfect as well as handsome. Please don’t take offence to this, I just like to point out good people that I witness in this life like yourself. I find you to be a wise man and eager to expand your experience on your journey. I’ll now leave you with the following quote as sort of reflects what you were talking about in this video and I can only hope that it finds you well. Peace… Keep up the great works and messages. "It is only by going down into the abyss that we recover the treasures of life. Where you stumble, there lies your treasure. Almost finished with my boot camp after a previous career, and wanted to share my fear with you, and it shares a relation to your fear. I come from a low rung is society, poor. My parents did everything they could to give me the opportunity to start my adult life better than they did. Naturally I squandered all of their efforts. But as a father now, their is no greater responsibility. Whatever greatness I may achieve in life, the base is always giving an example for my children to follow. At a certain point, you accept that the past lead you to this point, it’s up to you to pick up the torch, relight it since you burnt it out, and carry on leading the way. You can’t control the outcome, you just learned where you failed in a combined history of your parents short comings, to produce a better result for the next generation. Keep your head up, it’s the human condition. The learning curve will always be more rewarding than the perfect algorithm to solve life.

Hi Josh, Your words are talking to me, two years ago we discovered a tumor in my father's brain, it is a cancer. From this time, I see how heavy the treatments are and how he is changing over time. I understand how you feel, I mean, I really understand because my biggest worry is to see someone else dear to me having something like that, or get it myself. It is something really hard to face, to see your father suffering & changing like this and I still don't know what tomorrow will be made of but we have to move step by step and not over react too fast. One thing I can tell you from my experience: with his cancer, his lifespan was estimated at something like 5 to 14 months. And it is more than 2 years already. So nothing is decided, but what I noticed from my father is that he quickly accepted his condition and stays positive with it. This is his way to fight it and I deeply believe that being positive can really help A LOT. I don't know what to say more to cheer you up but, it is hard, really hard, and you will have your own ups & downs due to that as well and we have no other choice but go through it. You are doing the right thing at the moment and don't forget to keep energy & time for you as well because you cannot help people if you don't have anymore energy. That's a tricky balance to find, but you will find it. Good luck Josh!

I want my dad to live forever and all, and it's been hard just moving forward to figure out what I want. I wish you could stop giving time in visualizing your fears and invest more time dreaming about the best outcomes. You know it's our imagination that serves as the first step to materialization. I took care of her several years until she died. Sickness and death were all that I knew for almost ten years. The tough times were difficult to endure, but I learned to take life just one day at a time. Adversity is something we will all confront sooner or later.

I thought my mom was fine and healthy until she collapsed one day. She was gone before she hit the ground. In some ways I think I'm lucky for never having to deal with the long term stress of taking care of older parents, but grinding without their support can be a challenge.

Our greatest fear is fear itself. But I will take away the quote you've shared. Fear is biggest in our imagination I believe that in a situation more opportunities present themselves to use for coping and that we are so much more capable than we give ourselves credit for an important circumstance that requires our all. I have faith in myself and I have faith in you too..
