📜 Video Description 📜
At Carrot Corner we frame the mental game of poker by breaking down the human psyche into three main modes of operation. Mode 1 is instinct, Mode 2 is the chatter of hedonistic demons and Mode 3 is explicit rational deliberation. In this video we review 5 hands I played recently. The final hand illustrates a spot in which I fell prey to Mode 2 thinking. Do you have poker demons and if so how do YOU keep them at bay?

Your ability to range from interpreting solver outputs with game theory applications, to how to adapt/ignore those outputs based on player tendencies/real world factors, to self-knowledge and emotional control in a concise and coherent manner is excellent. Thank you for your dedication to education.

I think you are probably correct. My biggest demon is seeking action when card dead or playing with a bunch of nit lords. Like I didn't study poker to play steal the blinds and flop and fold. I study poker to be put in the blender and have to make tough decisions with my money on the line. Actually now that I think about, maybe seeking the brutality of poker is my biggest demon. Btw I am not a 1 trillion bb / 100 crusher at 3 billion NL. I am a slightly winning player at 25NL ( bankroll restrictions ). Just wanted to make that clear before anyone responds.

This is currently what I’m dealing with. Trying to get a Birds Eye view when I over value my hand. I know I should fold my QQ to a open limp then jamb since it’s usually AA but for some stupid reason I convince myself that calling off 100bb when I only put 3x in the pot is a great idea. Damn ego

The A3s hand. Why did u donk b50 ? Why not 100 or 150% pot ? I dont see a fish folding an A here because: 1. They are sticky 2. Many draws miss. So he is gonna "put you on a draw" and call.

I feel like the first 89s hand is one of those where you look and feel really clever as played because they had complete air and 3-barreled with it. The thing is I've been in plenty of very similar spots where fish are merging with Jx and I feel like an idiot calling down. Also the A on the river is much better for villain than hero.
@jb-rx2ig

@friedrichnietzsche7736

@jb-rx2ig in theory it's better for us. In practice, fish will just randomly bet a lot of Ax here twice even though they shouldn't.
@CarrotCornerPoker

We can for sure lose to merges. I still think we win more than 25% of the time (it was 1/2 pot as I recall) if you feel stupid when you run into Jx that’s because your goal is to never run into Jc because you deem that unacceptable. It doesn’t necessarily mean you lose 3/4s of the time. I highly doubt that we lose anywhere near this much. I think you’re focussing too much on how things look and feel and not enough on…………trueEV.

Pseudo logic to weight ranges after feelings. 'Won't flat AA, won't 5bet AKo.' Also, calling it a big mistake is just horrendously result-oriented. Even if your assumption is spot on, the mistake is clearly very small.
@CarrotCornerPoker
@CarrotCornerPoker 7 ай бұрын
Wait a minute. You’re saying it’s a very small mistake to 4-bet call off QQ vs someone who has no AK and all the AA and KK? I don’t thin my assumptions were expressed as absolutes and you’ve definitely misquoted me but if they were absolutes and were ‘spot on’ then I think you’d find this would be a mistake for many many bb in EV.
@CarrotCornerPoker
@CarrotCornerPoker 7 ай бұрын
In reality my argument was: 1. It’s break even to call off QQ in theory 2. In practice there is significantly less AK and more AA than in theory. 3. Therefore it’s significantly losing to call off QQ.
@EE-gu1vk
@EE-gu1vk 7 ай бұрын
@@CarrotCornerPoker My point being, it's hard to be that confident in those assumptions when AKo makes such a big difference to the output. You could add 100% AA and just a few % more AKo and it would still be a breakeven call. Add some JJ and random stuff that you see fish show up with from time to time, and you have a profitable call. I am not saying that the fold is bad, I just don't think you can be that confident in a random fish range construction to make it a big mistake.
@charlieyhp
@charlieyhp 6 ай бұрын
I agree with this part, however I don’t think it is profitable to 4bet QQ at all here. 4bet/fold TT-QQ just seem massively losing. The 9bb 3bet clearly tells that the player is a recreational, and I’m more than happy to play a 3bet pot here rather than guessing what to do against a jam. I also think this is jammed more likely, recs just don’t 3bet enough
@jaredcarrick3468
@jaredcarrick3468 7 ай бұрын
Pretty longwinded way of stating what any solver would quickly and easily tell you. Pocket queens doesn’t perform well enough against most opponents 4 bet jam pre of a 100+ BB stack in cash games range for it to be a +EV play stacking off in that spot.
