If the escaped bird's mate is still inside the aviary, you can still catch him back. I once had a male blue checked cordon bleu escape 2x from a hole in my outdoor aviary and 2x I got him back because his mate was still in the aviary. He never left the yard. I just set up a large, tall flight cage next to the aviary and left seed and water inside near the top of the cage while propped open the entrance on the bottom of the cage. The bird will eventually find its way inside to eat and drink near the top, and you just walk up slowly and close the entrance of the flight cage. Since birds instinctively try to escape by flying up, you won't risk losing it flying out of the tall flight cage.

Yes the female is still inside the aviary so im hoping he comes back once he gets hungry I placed the trap cage with food and also a bigger cage with the door open hoping he goes in and stays in there long enough for me to catch him. So glad to hear you where able to capture your again, fingers crossed hoping i get lucky and catch this male. And thankyou so much for the tips !

I had a similar experience with an escape from a large outdoor cage. It wasn’t large enough to walk in, so there was not any way to have a second compartment. After that escape, I learned to drape a curtain across the door whenever I needed to get a hand in. I heard the bird calling for a few days, but I was unable to recapture it. I won’t go into details, but it did not survive.
@paradiseaviary4 жыл бұрын
So sorry to hear about your case this is something that unfortunetly happens to alot of people just careless mistake but we learn from it and make the adjustments so it doesnt happen again. Like you said though it just sucks because these birds are not wild and will die when they escape wether from predators getting them or the lack of food they need to survive 😔

Yes like Mrx I would have baited the trap with another parrot finch. And leave the aviary safety door open for it to go in, & put a cage with birds in the safety porch. It often works. But with these small finches after flying out, exhaustion can hit them & they'll just sit where they landed. Another thing is wild birds will chase them off because their alien to that area. If you have a loud Bluetooth speaker you can load some finches on your phone so the calls reach further than your birds. Often birds will go to another aviary if they hear one.
@paradiseaviary4 жыл бұрын
Did all those things hoping to spot him but nothing so far Ive left a fee traps and baited my main trap with the female to see if he hears her and come. Hoping for the best but things are not looking good. He flew out like a bullet i didnt even get a chance to see which direccion he took of in!

I catch the majority of my finches back. With a nest and a mate still in the aviary, he shouldn't stray too far and should return the females calls. I would forget the trap and instead catch the bird in the safety hatch area. In this respect it's a huge advantage that the nest is located where it is. Open the main door but keep 2nd door to the aviary closed. Sprinkle seed in the hatch area. Use some string to pull the main door closed when you see him enter. He should go in there as its the closest point to access the nest. Good luck. Also, don't underestimate its ability to survive the night. I live in Melbourne Australia and we get to similar temperatures at night. The problem isn't the cold air, its the cold + wind - which we get here. Your sunny days should give the birds plenty of "charge" to survive nights at those temps so long as the wind and rain stays away. Good luck.
@paradiseaviary4 жыл бұрын
@Patrick Crawley your awsome that is an amazing Idea !!! I will take advantage of the fact the nest is so close to the door and do as you said hopefully he comes in that area and ill catch him. Ill let you know if it works. Its night time here now so Ill give it a go in the morning. Thank you so much for the help!
@patrickcrawley62074 жыл бұрын
@@paradiseaviary keep it in mind for next time. I often just put a bamboo stake as a perch in the hatch area, setup some some seed and water feeders on the wire near the perch and anything else to make it feel comfortable. Since your hatch area is unroofed, a blanket thrown over the top (but not covering the sides) might also help the bird feel more secure in there and likely to enter. Sometimes they go in there to roost at night, other times I have gone to work and come home and pulled the safety door shut only to find the bird sitting in there patiently. Oh and lastly don't forget to fashion some way of opening the 2nd door into the aviary from outside the hatch as you don't want to risk letting it out again!
@paradiseaviary4 жыл бұрын
@Patrick Crawley, thank you so much for all those tips. Unfortunetly I never saw this little guy again ☹. Ive made some changes to the aviary to avoid this problem in the future, but regardless feel more prepared incase it happens again. Always good to have a plan B!

Thank you Raul Izquierdo thats an awsome idea! Im also going to be adding a spring to the doors so that they are always forced close once i release them and they never stay open that way no one can escape again.

@@paradiseaviary good justification for capturing animals n keeping them as pets for your happiness . No living beings , none in this world will ever be happy under captivity and in a natural world if they really can’t survive then that’s the specific living beings inability to adapt . Those living beings that cannot fight natural will be taken out of this animal kingdom hierarchy and you really don’t need to bother so much for that natural order of life.. anyways another pair of poor birds will be now under captivity ..well I pity those too ..

Hopefully the calls of the female will lure the male back to the aviary en into the trap. I had the same problem a while ago when a young nutmeg manakin (just fleged out of the nest 1 week) escaped from my outside aviary and it was out of sight in an instant. Luckely the parents kept calling it and by the end of the day I managed to catch it with a net because the young bird was hungry and returned to the avairy. And a few years ago a goldfich mule escaped on me and was gone for weeks when I got a phonecall from a man who caught the bird 50 km (!) away from my village! The goldfinch mule was close banded with my personal breeder number on it so the this man could trace me and give me a call... Nice avairy by the way!
