There is nothing to be be ashamed of for having epidural... I don't understand honestly why is so difficult to accept for some women that suffering is not the only way to give birth. And try to avoid unnecessary pain is not going to make you a worse mother.

Although research is scarce on this topic, epidurals and medical inductions have increased rates of emergency c-sections. It has a lot to do with the mother's reaction to the drugs given to her, and the fact that she is lying on her back and compressing decreasing the blood flow to her baby through a major artery running through her back. I had three c-sections at the hospital and had my fourth baby at home, I was in active labor for 4 hours and pushed the baby out in under 5 minutes. Being at home probably eased the anxiety

Agreed! Had my labour not gone so quickly, I would of gotten one. I went in with an open mind as to whether or not I would have. I didn’t, but it’s just how it went.

Your body is miraculous. Be gentle with yourself. My nephew was born at 43+ weeks, and now at age 33 he has finally learned to be on time for things. When anyone asked my sister "how are you today?" (after 40 weeks), she'd burst into tears. All is well and all parties are healthy and happy!

Congratulations!! Every birth is unique ❤️ No matter how your baby comes out you delivered your baby! And a tip for all you expecting mamas! It’s good to understand the basics of a c-section (even if it’s not your plan) so you won’t be caught completely off guard if the plan/situation changes.

Thank you for introducing us to beautiful Sadie Joy! What a precious name. I also just wanted to say a big thank you for sharing your birth story. I had a very similar story (home birth turned brutal and intervention-filled delivery at 41+5). Your story made me feel very seen and I really appreciate your perspective on the whole experience 💛

Congratulations Meghan and Happy Birthday Sadie!🥳 I'm sure most of us mamas understand exactly how you feel and appreciate you helping new mamas understand that things sometimes just don't go as planned and you will feel off after birth. I did go over with my son 42 weeks and 2 days and with a very similar experience. I got tired of hearing the nurse tell me every time I went in to the ER that he is a happy little clam. Thank you for sharing and happy to hear that you and your baby is healthy and safe :)

Your birth story resonates so much with me - I also had wanted and prepared as much as I could for a very low-intervention and unmedicated birth, and ended up going as far overdue as you, no dilation, no progress with induction, and finally a C-section. The process of coming to terms with it all afterwards was such a mental/emotional roller coaster. Like you, I wish I knew why my body “failed” me (cuz that truly is what it feels like)! Sending many hugs to you for having had to go through that same roller coaster, but also happy that your sweet baby is here and you’re both healthy! Wishing you so many days of joy ahead 💕

Your body didn’t fail. And it’s heartbreaking you feel that way. I don’t like that they push for induction because it adds a lot of stress and tension to the body If the body is tense, if the mind is tense, then it can’t progress like it’s suppose to be. Plus nurses and doctors don’t believe in being patience with mothers. Praise God you are healthy and so is your baby.

SAME HERE!!! Congratulations to you and your husband! 16 years ago I gave birth to my son in a very similar experience. 26 hours of labor, 15 hours w/o epidural. Pitocin gave me very hard regular contractions and at the end I dilated to 2cm 😒. They had to take him via C-section due to 24 hours since water broke. It sparked a depression months later b/c I felt like my body had failed and I had failed. All these years later I have a much different perspective on the whole thing. It’s lovely to see you seem to have accepted it and are ready for all of the wonderful things to come. All that matters is you are her Mom and that is the most special gift in the world😊

Thanks so much for sharing your experience 🧡 I gave birth to our baby girl 10 days after you on 18 November, and the birth also didn’t go to plan, despite all the hypnobirthing practice I had done. From feeling totally fine, I went straight into active labour and dilated to 10cm within 3 hours, managing without pain relief. All the staff at the hospital were very encouraged by this and people kept telling me our little one would be here so soon, but actually she then got unexpectedly stuck in the birth canal, contractions stalled and I needed both vontouse and a pitocin drip and only narrowly avoided ending up in theatre. It was extremely painful and stressful - not at all the zen experience I’d hoped for! I guess I learnt that birth is unpredictable, and all we can do is make what seem to be the best decisions at the time. No matter how it happens, we should be so proud of ourselves for bringing our babies safely into the world. Xxx

Thank you for sharing your story! My first birth was also a failed induction that caused me to get an epidural and eventually a C section because of heart deceleration. It took me months of cycling thoughts to get past my "failure" and eventually between that and my baby not sleeping well for over a year I realized I had postpartum depression and anxiety. I never thought it would impact me so greatly but it is apparently really common for women who get unexpected c sections to experience Ppd/a. I hope you feel like you've truly come to terms with it. It sounds like you did since you feel "neutral" about it. You truly did everything possible to make it happen and sometimes we will just never understand, like you said. Some encouraging news for birth after a C-section: I just had my VBAC with my second son on 11/24/22! I still needed Pitocin because my labor started natural but kept stalling (40 hours start to finish) and I had an epidural because as you said, the sleeplessness and back labor was unbearable eventually, BUT I finally got what felt like a redemptive birth because I birthed vaginally. It meant a lot to me after feeling disappointed in my "hopes" fory first birth. It felt like a huge victory. I think I remember you saying you were only planning for one child but if you guys decide on a second, advocate for yourself for a VBAC and remember every birth is different! The next one could be a totally opposite experience. Praying for you and your husband, sweet Sadie and your years of love and memories to come!

I had the same vision as you for my first born having a natural birth, but circumstances changed resulting in an unexpected c-section. I hope your recovery goes well and that you can fit in as much walks with Sadie as possible because even though it's cold outside, the walk calms your mind as well as give baby a taste of fresh air when they are bundled up snugly in their one piece thick jacket. But yes, most importantly, listen to your body and take things at your own pace. You've got this!

I think it is one of those reminders in life that we don't have to have things happen exactly the way we imagine and when we let go and surrender the control, with faith in our hearts, all will work out in the end. Congratulations! I was very happy for you when I first saw this posted, but I didn’t have a chance to watch the whole video until today. So precious to meet your baby. Much of your labor story sounded very similar to mine though she was two days early. I started out going to a birth center planning for all natural and wound up with an emergency c-section. Sunday morning my water broke, and she was delivered Monday night. I labored at the birth center until Monday morning, at which point I had to be transferred to the hospital due to policies. I wound up with pitocin (so painful) and eventually an epidural and an emergency c-section (same issue of baby’s heart rate). I later found out I likely had back labor because my baby appeared to be sunny side up when she was delivered via c-section. I remember being talkative during my c-section as well. :)

My baby is just about 2 weeks older than yours! First time mom here as well. So happy you made this video. I had planned on having a homebirth. Did allll the prep and yet God had other plans 😂 I had told my husband twice, “I feel like we might get transferred to the hospital.” And yep! After laboring 24 hours at home and staying at 8cm for 3 hours and back labor, I transferred to hospital for pain relief. I totally understand how you feel. I’m so happy for you guys and proud of your decision to look at it in a positive light! It inspires me ❤

Congratulations!!! 🥰 Emergency C-section mama here. It's a hard thing to process mentally when the process goes so differently from what you'd envisioned. I was 5cm when I went in but at 7cm there were issues: heart rate, baby not dropping, meconium when they broke my water. They lost his heart rate and I was rushed to the OR. Thankfully they got him out in time. He's now 15 and perfectly healthy! ❤️

Your remarks about your water breaking brought back memories. I too heard a popping sound, waddled to the washroom, and gushed water all the way to the washroom. I was freaking out (was only at 34 weeks myself), this wasn't supposed to happen yet. I got myself to hospital and waited for 48 hours (resting up, nothing happening) before baby decided it was time and decided to make an appearance. Labour went so fast that nurses didn't realize I was already 9cm dilated and I needed to be rushed to birthing room. Doula made it, but just nearly. It ended up being a no intervention natural birth, whilst in my head I had already given into thinking I'd need every intervention out there. There is no way of predicting. And nothing went "wrong" in the way you prepared for labour or laboured. It is what it is. The neutral feeling you are left with, is one I recognize. Keep in mind that feeling might change. And if at any point it does, please make sure you find a way to talk about that with the Doula or a nurse, as it is still part of processing and giving it a place.

Wow. What an experience you had! Crazy how you’re body refused to dilate. I’m so glad you were able to have the help you needed to have a c-section. Both of my babies heart rates decreased with my contractions as well but I was able to push them out. Each one of them took 3hrs of pushing and I was moved into lots of positions too. I had both without an epidural which still amazes me! My kids are now 7 and 4 years old. I wanted a water birth with my first but they made us take the pool down when her heart rate dropped. My son kept going back in after I would push and apparently there was talk of a possible c-section. At one point I had enough and decided to push after a contraction ended and the dr helped get him out. I was awake for over 48 hrs with my firstborn and after it was all done I realized I had never felt true exhaustion until then. Our bodies are truly amazing ❤ Congratulations to you guys! 😊

Thank your for sharing your story, Meghan. I know how hard it is to have expectations of how you want the birth to go and it go so differently. I did not go past due, but chose to be induced before my due date per my OBs suggestion. I had some prodomal labor the weekend prior to the induction that fizzled put. Come induction time I ended having painful back labor and baby never descended down. Looking back I believe he was posterior and that is how I ended up with a C-section. It was a failure to progress situation also. I do agree that in the moment making decisions is so much different. You really did give it your all, I'm so glad you are having a successful breastfeeding journey so far and things seem to be well. ❤

The body knows what to do. I’m happy to hear you both are healthy. We can’t live in the past, but just know your body didn’t fail. It’s about engaging with the body despite the “normal” timeline and processes that medical professionals think you are suppose to have. The baby and body knows exactly what it needs to do and people get afraid when the body and baby moves differently than what they expect. Sometimes waiting and praying helps to calm the mind to allow things to move along. We are all happy for you and Sean. Sadie is beautiful and loved.

And the bottom line is she’s here and she’s well, and it was her way of coming!! With that said I don’t know if you remember I was finally pregnant, we started trying when you did and at last it worked in sept. It ended in a ruptured ectopic. I’m now 6 weeks post surgery. Hello Meghan! I had a very similar experience to you in September of this year. I was pregnant with my first baby, a girl, and planning a homebirth with midwives. I had also done all the natural labor prep and was so excited for my birth experience. Unfortunately, my baby was also breech since before 20 weeks. At 37 weeks we went to the hospital for an ECV which was very intense and unsuccessful. We went home and I continued spinning babies techniques and chiropractor visits to try to get her to flip. My husband and I weren’t comfortable with the possible complications from a natural breech delivery so we scheduled a c section. It was the absolute last thing I wanted to do and it was a very hard decision. Still, we were hoping she might turn before the scheduled date. About 2 weeks before the date I woke up at 4am to my water breaking exactly like yours did- a huge gush that just kept coming. I could still feel her head up under my ribs so we immediately drove to the hospital. We hadn’t even had a pre-op appointment so we didn’t know what to expect. Within 2 hours our baby was delivered. I also felt extremely tired and nauseous during the surgery and felt like I wasn’t fully present for the experience. I agree with you that it is SO hard to have things go the opposite of what you were planning. I spent many weeks wrestling with that. I also felt like it was my body’s fault and struggled with what I thought birth should be. But I loved what you said about birth being a very small part of the overall journey of parenthood! I am so glad you and your daughter are healthy and bonding well Congratulations to you and your family!

But nope my daughter decided she’d make it a whole month earlier at 35 weeks. It was such a neutral experience as well, I had the epidural as well but I asked for it so early on, that I never even got to know what a contraction feels like. Many blessings to you and your lovely family💛

Congratulations, Meghan! Thank you for sharing your birth story... I had a very similar experience and honestly, it's been so tough processing it all and accepting that my son had to be born that way, even though I tried so desperately and did everything I could to prepare for a natural, unmedicated birth. Unfortunately he was also sunny side up which made the pain absolutely unbearable. I wasn't induced...but I also went to 41+4 before going into labor. However, the whole time my baby was still high up and no matter the positions my amazing midwife who is all about natural birth, had me get into, nothimg worked and eventually after my contractions petered out, they decided to transfer me to hospital. It was the most horrific experience of my life... I was given pitocin and hooked up to a monitor and made to stay on the bed on my back...the worst for back labor and for the pain! Plus, it was during Covid and my husband couldn't be around. Thankfully, my baby and I are well and safe even after that terrible and extremely traumatic experience. He is now almost 11 months old and I feel like I am finally able to move on from the trauma. Hearing others stories...and that things don't always go to plan even if you did everything you could and made choices that were good and natural, etc. Sadie is beautiful...well done!

Congratuslaions Meghan and Shawn! so happy to hear from you and see you and the new addition Sadie Joy! Sh'e's just perfect! I was overdue on my first one too, and had a normal delivery at a birthing center with a midwife almost 39 years ago. Midwives were a new thing then! The Labour was about 12 hours and LOTS of lower back pain! I ripped from end to end and had stitches inside and out, but still consider the experience wonderful. Our Daughter SHANNON MICHELE was born on 1.28.84 and she has two kids that were delivered by C-Section. She is a health nut like you! Kids are all unvaccinated and treated with supplements when sick and homeopathic remedies. Anyway, I was just thinking and wondering about you this week, and hoping to hear from you soon! then There you were! God Bless you and your family Meghan! !!!

Congratulations. Birth happens way it happens. Mine where both breech (later found out due to bicornuate uterus so they would have never been able to go head down). I still find there is a ton of judgement and mis understanding about c sections - no one would choose major surgery whilst awake if they had a mother choice. Has made me very passionate about educating some of my more judgemental "friends". Glad beautiful Sadie arrived safely and motherhood going well ❤️

I totally understand your valid feelings about your birth! My kids births were very similar to how your birth sounds. Heart decels, pitocin, failure to progress. It is very emotional to want a natural birth so badly and not end up having one. I cried with both my c sections so don't feel bad!

I'm glad your sweet baby is healthy and you had a safe delivery and you shared your story, sometimes babies choose what they will do you can plan, all you want but ultimately it is his/her choice, they start taking charge at birth, lol. I had to have an emergency c-section myself, had been going through labor for hrs to her heart deceleration, and her cord was wrapped around her neck 3 times they say were lucky they got her out. Thank you for sharing.

I went in thinking my water had broken and 5 days overdue and they sent me home too! They said it had partially broken/ leaked but baby was fine so go home and rest. Sure enough we were like you, having to go right back. Why do they send us home overdue? Glad Sadie is here and healthy and sorry you had to go through such a long pregnancy and delivery❤️💕🙏🏻She’s beautiful and you look amazing too!

Thank you so much for candidly sharing your birth story, and congratulations on your beautiful baby! My two babies are home for the holiday, two girls ages 23 and 21, and neither birth went according to plan. I did have a birth plan with my first daughter, and then after 24 hours of horrible contractions and no progress, I went through every intervention possible to get that baby out! With my second daughter I kind of had no birth plan, and even though it went smoothly at first, she had the cord around her neck and they had to get her out before i was ready to push. So the best of plans and the lack of plans both equalled something really dramatic! And here they are, grown up and thriving and not without bumps along the way. Maybe childbirth makes us parents resilient and flexible? And loving and grateful and present? Still figuring it all out as I go:). Wishing you and your sweet family all the best!
