I just went from an R1250R, which is a high spec and powerful road bike that weighs 530lbs to a 2024 310 GS. I decided to downsize significantly and the 310GS at 385lbs takes care of that. It also has a more comfortable riding position while not being too high. I had concerns about all of the possible downsides: low power, weak brakes, soft, non adjustable suspension. After riding it for less than a month, I’m happy to say the bike works fine. After seeing reviews like this where people are riding it for 1000’s of miles on and off road, I’m confident I made the right choice. I ride only on road. I was tempted to get a 790 Duke, with way more power and technical capability. That bike is known as “the Scalpel”. At 76, I decided that my scalpeling days are behind me and besides that, it was uncomfortable and painful to ride. The 310GS is not just a beginner bike. I’ve been riding for 55 years. Just don’t expect to pass everything on the road and it’s a good way to keep riding.

The thing is with bikes like this, you can totally own them. Its not the bike commanding you what you can and should do, you can fully tell the bike everything and anything you want and it will never talk back. How many times I have seen guys on big bikes hitting some unexpected road and say: "I would need a 300cc on this road" The question is time, if you need 100mph because you plan trips far away so you want highway to get there, than pick a big one and forget hard terrains (which will come actually), than you have to turn around. Or you plan your time as well, so you are able to get there no matter what. I found the second option more suitable for me. Great bike mate! Thanks for the feelings you have!

Great review of the mods to your G310 GS...I just bought a 2021 Black/yellow one. At 68 years old, it's the smallest, and maybe the most fun bike I have owned to-date. I have owned an R100 GS/PD, R1100 GS, and currently a 2013 R1200 GS. The full sized ones are great do-everything bikes, but the 310 is the one I can play with and not worry about not being able to pick up and the end of a narrow trail. It has added a new dimension to my cycling life, at a time when I was starting to think about how much more I was going to ride...this bike is so much fun!!Thanks for your video, I now have lots of ideas as to how to make mine better for me!

I’ve had mine for 2 weeks and I love it. I’ve had several bikes over the years. The little GS is awesome. I’ll keep mine forever. For cruising around country roads and backroad adventures it’s really good. I don’t go on the freeway with mine. The back roads are more enjoyable anyway. And it’ll blast you up to 60 quick enough. The build quality on mine is very good. India is making some nice bikes right now. That RE Scram 411 looks pretty sweet.

Thanks for the tour of your G310GS accessories and upgrades. Those videos are very helpful when deciding which upgrades to do. I need to make a similar video for my baby GS. These are great little bikes for my old man adventures. I rode small displacement dual sport thumpers since the mid 1970s. I bought a 2019 G310GS for my 60th birthday because I wanted something lightweight but a little more comfortable because I'm no longer riding gnarlier off road. I want to ride back roads, gravel roads, dirt roads and some mild off road and the G310GS is nearly perfect for that. I'd like tubeless spoke wheels but wouldn't trade the tubeless alloy wheels for spoke wheels that require tubes (as the new KTM 390 Adventure did), but for my tamer adventures, the alloy rims are fine. Similarly, better suspension would be nice but the stock soft suspension is very comfortable on the road and is adequate for my mild off road riding. What I *REALLY* want is a much larger fuel tank. An adventure bike should have a 300+ mile range. Sadly, there is no aftermarket tank to increase the range. Carrying fuel bladders is a poor substitute for a long range fuel tank. If you don't want to look like a shill for SRC, maybe don't wear their T-shirt in the video. 😛
@ADVLARRY Жыл бұрын
Congrats on the new bike. I think it’s a great bike for the tamer adventurer. But I definitely put it through its pieces. I run lower air pressure with the alloy wheels and yet to have any issues. I actually don’t mind the smaller tank it helps me to take more frequent breaks to keep the legs and back and check. Lol. Src is a great company. Happy to wear the shirt but didn’t want people to think I was getting something out of this video. Good luck with the upgrades. Keep me updated on the new ride!

Larry mentioned in the video that the G310GS is a good entry to the larger ADV bikes and that's exactly how motorcycle manufacturers, not just BMW Motorrad, treat their smaller ADV bikes. They intentionally de-feature them, not just to meet a lower price point, but to prevent these lighter and more off road capable ADV bikes from cutting into the sales of their mid and full size ADV bikes that cost 2-4 times as much. BMW could spend another $400 on a larger fuel tank, tubeless spoke rims and upgraded suspension to make the G310GS Adventure, and I'd spend another $2000 for it. I bought my 2019 G310GS as a 60th birthday present for myself. I rode it to the local Beemer breakfast and a 71 year old retired lawyer was mooning over it so I tossed him the key and he took it for a test ride. The next week, he rode his new G310GS to breakfast. BMW Motorrad marketing sees the G310GS as an entry level first bike to get new customers on the upgrade path to an 850GS and 1300GS, but they're completely ignoring the people of all ages who prefer lighter bikes for off road use, and the older riders who need to downsize to keep riding. The marketing weasels want to sell a young person their first bike. They aren't interested in selling older riders their last bike, even though older riders typically have more disposable income and would be willing to pay a lot more to get a lightweight full featured ADV bike.

I have a 2018 GS 310 with many of the same mods. I have about 8,000 miles on the bike. Limitations of the 310 are felt at the extremes: (1) squirrelly and underpowered on the interstate; (2) not enough low end torque in first gear and too bulky for single track. I keep wavering back and forth and haven't yet pulled the trigger. Aesthetically, the GS wins hand down IMO. I've owned sport bikes and cruisers in the past, but haven't been riding for about 5 years. I wanted something fun and playful, able to commute, and maybe some light trail riding. Has your opinion of the GS changed at all since the you made the video or are you still loving it? I saw your other video of the 850, also very nice looking!! Were you craving more power or just a different feel? Great job and keep em coming.

Hey, thanks for watching the video. I actually get this question a lot yes I’m still very in love with my 310. Basically the only reason I purchased the 850 was for longer faster traveling. the 310 just doesn’t cut it on the highway being stuck at 70 mph with a single cylinder thumper is a little rough. I’ve done it for 9 hours straight and some people say you can do it but I choose to just be more comfortable on the 850. that being said I tend to ride the 310 more than 850 daily. It’s just more fun too hope on and zip around town or go blasting through the woods. it is way more fun and easily controlled. Plenty of aftermarket parts are available and so far at 9000 miles I haven’t had any issues. I hope this helps.

Good job. Don't worry about what people say about the 310 -- and you've done a nice job with the upgrades. This bike is capable enough off-road. I recently rented one in south America and did more off-road miles in 10 days than most 1250gs owners will ever see in 5 years. I found your video because after my experience with the rental I'm considering buying one for myself and looking for ideas. BTW, what are you using for pannier/luggage system? This seems to be one of the things I'm having a hard time finding for the 310.

Great setup. I also ride 310gs. Love it so far. I love what you've done with it, but kind of hesitant to do the same. Feel like maybe it's better to upgrade to 850gs and then spend all the money on upgrades. Cause it makes sense to spend 1-2 grand on extras on the bike that cost $20K, but doing the same to the bike that is tops $4-5K... But love all the extras
@ADVLARRY2 жыл бұрын
Or do both. Haha. But your right. It seems like a bad investment but I ride it a lot so it makes sense for me.

Like people doing the rally raid upgrades on the cb500x ends up soon costing more and weighing more than a T700. And is still a being low powered road based bike with poor ground clearance and normal way up forks

@@chrishart8548 Yes. So, my plan is to favor upgrades that I can take off and put it on my next bike. Saddle bags, lights, etc. can be fairly universal.

To each their own, he said he is practically his daily rider, and he's super smart in investing in his great new bike. Doesn't matter the cost or size engine, you buy the mods you can and make it more individualized. I'm going to do 90% of what he did, but I will also add the GPS bracket, going with the Montana I. And bags, as I'm taking her RTW. And some would say why buy a more expensive bigger bike, and add all the extras? For that much it should of came with them...lol..even my 1200Custom HD has mods just for me lol..

Hey, follow-up question - what kind of luggage rack do you have for them? I'm having trouble finding a good rack, there are a few good bags available, but all soft ones need some sort of rack to keep them away from the muffler/tire/etc.

You look to be a similar build to myself, how do these hold up with us bigger fellers? I love these things, been wanting a second bike for light travel but the offroad capability. Like for most 55-65mph roads, but in the mountains mainly think it'll hold up? Really considering one, and the full Rally raid getup to go with it.

And, if so, did it get better when you switched it out? I'm really surprised they put the exhaust pipe so close behind the right foot peg....

I’m in the same situation; the CB500X’s versatility and all round performance is extremely appealing but I prefer the way the 310 looks and it’s lightweight.
@Slayaah92 жыл бұрын
I’m like you on that. I grew up on a Varadero 125. And loved the weight. About the same weight on this one. Just perfect for gnarly off-road where I think the bigger bikes are too heavy. I think it’s a good compromise 👌🏽
@bogimrbogi50462 жыл бұрын
i have the GS and i have been doing mostly long road trips and a little bit of "light" off road and i am thinking of switching to cb 500x; the gs is fine up to 100 km/h but anything above for longer periods of time is not so great (also fuel eceonomy goes out of the window above 100)
@oknevals2 жыл бұрын
@@dashuntas.m4045 You are not saving much on weight (maybe 40lbs) but, you are losing a lot on power. Also, GS suspension is way softer than X. Neither bike is good fit for hard off-road but, X is way better for regular road. If you are gonna be riding below 70mpg, GS is fine. If you are looking a lot of time on dirt, check crf300l (rally). First bike is sacrifice bike though. Get something you won't feel bad trashing because you will likely drop it few times. Everybody does.
@dashuntas.m40452 жыл бұрын
@@oknevals the Crf300L Rally is really interesting but it’s more off road focused than either the X or 310. The 40lbs is significant to me although you’re right about the lack of power, the GS can be great off-road especially with the right mods. I just wish It had a bigger tank for long distance. The X is a better all round bike for sure though but the 310s lighter weight and looks >>.
