Lauren- Standard precaution for serious cruisers: 1-Two bilge pumps. One small one, to sip of last bits off the bottom. Second, big bilge pump mounted with the pickup a half inch to inch higher up. 2-That big bilge pump gets connect to a LOUD bilge alarm. If the little pump can't deal with things and the big one kicks in? Yup. You want that immediate alarm. IMO, the best prop shaft seal is GoreTex string or putty. Install it in a conventional packing gland, and it should keep you bone dry without needing any special parts. Rarely needs tightening. Sounds like you have to haul out and really do some gut overhauls. A prmopt and thorough fresh water washdown will save many things. You can also use WD40 or rubbing alcohol to displace the fresh water (that's what KonTiki did) and once it dries that way, many things will be saved. Just be careful and ventilate any fumes carefully. No sparks. If you use the proper fittings and sealants, you can run wires, even splices, underwater and waterproof. It takes longer and costs a little more, but "buy once, cry once."

3- Good old manual pomp for when the electrics go out. 4- The best pump ever, a scared person with a bucket
@framemaker5211 ай бұрын
@@dajobra If the leak is serious, manual pumps and buckets will soon exhaust the operator. A better way, if you have a functioning diesel engine, is to fit a bypass valve onto the raw water intake in order to pump the bilge using the engine's cooling circuit. (The intake hose that's attached to the bypass valve should have an effective screen to prevent bilge trash from clogging the circuit.)

Hi, I'm Jah. I've been a boater and tech for over 30 on recreational and commercial vessels. All of the surveyors I known and work with don't like dripless shift seals. The problem you experienced is just one of the issues....and you got very lucky! If the bellows had been compromised you would have had a bigger repair if at all possible. Generally work on the those seals require a haulout....using a tradional shaft log would offer more possibilities for repair with the boat in the water. Im really glad you and your friend are ok. Happy sailing!

Not all dripless seals are the same. These pss seals are prone to catastrophic failures whereas the Tides marine lip seals are much better design and will give a warning ie start to drip when the seal needs to be replaced. This is a 5 min job which in 6 years I’m yet to do with mine.

Age old dilema: 1. conventional stuffing box...a few drips. 2. Dripless shaft seal, no drips except a sinking boat when it fails with no warning. At least a conventional stuffing box gives you incremental warning over time. I am an old Marine mechanic that doesn't really like change. Sure you heard it before but the comments help the al go rhythm I am told.

Hey Lauren: Hang in there girl! Next time you get hauled-out get rid of the dripless and revert to conventional packing gland. Also check your cutlass bearing. I would replace it while the drive shaft is out of the hull. The reason that collar came loose is because whom ever loosened it last did not replace the set-screws; they can not be reused. Also there should be two set-screws per each hole on the collar one on top the other to keep them from loosening from vibration. Also use two hose clamps, on the shaft, heads in opposite direction to prevent the collar from sliding forward. Don't be discouraged, the more the add-ons you have the more maintenance. Install a whale pump in the cockpit for bilge bailing. Everytime I see under your floor boards I get conserned. From a marine engeneer's stand point I see many issues. You need to address out of sight out of mind components. Exercise all your seacocks at least once a month. Is your drive shaft bonded? Have your grounding, and bonding system checked and cleaned by an EXPERT; most so called marine electricians, and even boat builders don't understand grounding, and bonding!!! If you haul out in Ft Lauderdale coming fall or winter I could give you a hand for a couple days. I am still recovering from a serious car accident a year ago! Keep your chin up. You are doing GREAT!!!

I will never forget the first time I snorkled over a coral reef, while visiting Guam, how dozens of small yellow fish came up and 'kissed' my skin. They swam with me and thought me one of them. Sorry for your troubles. I keep a hose clamp on my prop shaft just behind the coupling as a secondary precaution to prevent this very issue. PYI states in their manual that the set screws are one-time use; insure to use new screws when replacing. Generally it’s a good idea to check your bilges if you hear the pumps running constantly. Your composure and positive attitude throughout the emergency is incredibly inspirational. I hope you can make an insurance claim to have the boat rewired, that’s going to be a big expense and all wore should be replaced, even wires that look “ok” can wick water down the line and become mystery issues and cause resistance in the future. Pyi offers a “pro” Rebuild kit which includes a premium bellows that is much more heavy duty rubber than the original for added peace of Mind. Good luck and persevere you got this!

Use heavier wire when replacing the old stuff wherever you can. The voltage drop especially at 12 VDC can be a killer. I had a 24 VDC on a 32" CG MSO utility boat that had trouble with the radar failing repeatedly. Turned out the specified power supply cable certified tot carry 20 amps at 120V had a 10 V + drop @ 24V and 20 amps, the radar would fail below 18 v.

Three words "VERY WELL DONE"!!!😁💙😁💙😁 A few weeks back you commented about not catching many fish while trolling from place to place, and I was going to ask what bait you were using. I noticed that the fisherman were using squid 🐙 imitating baits. I have had good success with them in the past in Salt and fresh water. I wish I could get some to you to try. Maybe you are already using them, but let me know. I would love to see you more successful catching fresh fish for you and Mako. Sorry this is going to be a little long. I thought adding the Patreon list at the end of the show was an excellent decision on your part and should bring more new Patreons to your channel. Production values just keep getting better each week. 😎😎😎 You are a real pro now. One little suggestion, and it is only that not a criticism, in some scenes, where it might look good, you could try a split screen effect.🤔🤔🤔 For example when you are dropping the anchor, you on one side using the controls and the other side the anchor going into the water. Or you cranking on the winch on one side, and the sails unfurling on the other. I do a lot of split screen and pic in pic affects in my edits. Ok, I hope I haven't bored vou too much, and if you would rather discuss editing or shooting notes elsewhere let me know. All in all, I totally love your channel and look forward to each new adventure. So I will say again, until next time, please be safe, be happy, remember to take care of yourself and of course Mako. 💙😊💙😊💙

Sorry to see the trouble you are having. I keep thinking, can’t the corrosion be cleaned off some of the parts. The solid buss bars and some of the connections I would attempt to clean the corrosion off. Maybe in boating circles this is not practiced but I work on aircraft and we sometimes have to deal with corrosion like what you are dealing with. We use fresh water and mild acids to clean up corrosion. If you had access to these you may be able to salvage some of the parts. Just a suggestion. I admire your ability to roll with the punches. You go girl! Thank you for making these videos, take care!

Lots of green cake growth on the copper connections from the salt air and water probably months before the prop shaft leaking. Thank goodness you were in shallow water and had someone there to help! Boats and water especially salt water, everything corrodes even 150' up the mast. I liked using silicone lined heat shrink tubing for critical electrical connections and good old Lubriplate grease all over the battery connections to seal them and cut corrosion. Along the way I learned Murphy's Law, what can go wrong can and will go wrong when you lest expect it or can afford it. The things I've seen growing up on an island and 20 + years in the CG and some of the stories I've heard about not being able to get the emergency generator started because someone neglected the importance of checking or keeping the batteries charged. Isolated dual batteries have their place. Good luck in your sailing adventures.

I've seen those PSS Seals come loose like that before. As someone else said, the set screws need to be replaced as they are a one time use item. Also, you can add a cheap shaft collar or shaft zinc behind the rotor as insurance if they come loose again. Personally, I'm not a fan of them. High water alarm and backup bilge pump should be on your list for the rewire. Unfortunately any wire that has been wet with salt water will fail. They may look ok and clean up, but the water will have wicked into the wire and failure will happen. Sorry this happened to you, but it will be better when redone!

I don’t know if anyone suggested this, but McMaster Carr sells SS collars that can be bolted around your prop shaft. Once you set the tension on the bellows, and tighten the set screws on the large SS donut, secure the collar behind the donut and tighten. This keeps the donut from moving away from the carbon coupler and reducing the pressure. It has worked for me. You can also use a collar zinc in a pinch if you have the room, or a hose clamp. Great video.

You've handled yourself well, and the feeling to take away here is that shaft seal misbehaved when you were surrounded by help and not a week away from the nearest human being. I dreamed of getting out there, saved for years, and had it all taken away by covid and other things I don't want to lament about. My solace is that I can vicariously ride aboard with you through the internet. What tiny advice I can give is *tools* - get you proper allen head sockets and 3/8" drive tools to make the next trip through the bilge less frustrating - because there *will* be a next time. Further it's a pain - but moving all your electronics higher, like high up onto the master cabin wall is an eyesore but way less irritating to deal with it being wet. It's bad that happened but please continue, your presence makes being stuck on land suck a lot less.

This summer I had the same problem, the PSS shaft broke. There were 2 reasons; 1- the engine silent blocks were broken and needed to be replaced, secondly the Vêtus flexible coupling was also broken, instead of replacing the PSS and Vêtus Flexible Coupling, it is recommended to order a PSS and Vêtus service kit and replace every 6 years. Much cheaper than buying a new one at 350€ each.

Hi Lauren, Im Brett. You are lucky you are experiencing these issues now in the safety (relatively speaking) of the Bahamas re, shallow water. Very impressed with your attitude, guts and belief. However, we all can still learn and before you commence your circumnavigation... 1. The electrical: Like others have said, make all your electrical connections, bus boards, panels and connections above the waterline, build a cabinet whatever but get em' out of the water, numbered and clearly labeled- then in case of flooding (in the dark) only wrapped, covered protected wiring will be submerged and no issue. 2. The plumbing: OMFG girl!, I see a rats nest of horror under those floor boards. As an ex tradesperson with OCD my heart skips a beat when you lift the floorboards. With carefull planning assistance, investment and layout you can install a system thats easy to manage, if at all. Hint - install the largest pipes and or cables first, followed by the next smallest, then test, test and test again. Good luck

I live on a boat for 9.5 years in the 1990's and the old man that owned the Marina a friend Dan, taught me something that could save someone's boat and life or lives. In an emergency where you are taking on large amounts of water and the bilge pump is not keeping up or dies you can close the through hull intake for the raw water engine cooling and use let the engine water pump (cooling water system) act as a powerful bilge pump. That said if you are putting out to sea it is an excellent idea to have a new ready to go trash pump setup for any such type of emergency.

Hi Lauren, Have a look at Tides Marine shaft seal system....it allows you to keep a couple seals ready in backup and are very easily replaced afloat....just cut out the old seal and slide the new in....did it myself on a friends boat this week. On my Benetau I have the volvo rubber dry system that you replace every 5 years....mine is 20 and always good...really depends on shaft turning hours...having a folding propeller, shaft doesn't turn while sailing....that reduces use. Know PSS seals...as everything they have good and bad things....always a thing to check on the dry before going on the water. An old bike air chamber is a good one to keep in the tool box, you can cut it in strips and tie around the shaft to stop a leak. Poliurethane foam spray is another one...it sticks to wet surfaces and can quickly stop a water entry after a crash. For the electric...keep the cave diving hogartian rigging philosophy....KISS...keep it simple stupid...apliances are nice but as a solo sailor you need reliability and be able to fix anything anywhere...electrons and sea water don't mix well....keep them as appart as possible. Always nice to be able to jury rig an electric system that can be quickly reduced to basic and isolated if something unlucky happens....flooding, lightning, fire...(basic: light, pumps, vhf radio, engine start) You have the attitude girl...always try, ask for help and don't give up....problems always have a solution (sometimes expensive) and if not...find a way around. Fair winds Lauren 🥰

I've just celebrated ten years living in my self converted Mercedes sprinter, last 3 years stuck on a relatives drive way, super low towards the end, managed to get a spot on a friends land, super high on life right now, my point is that if you want it to happen it will, just keep at it it all comes good in the end 😊

Hey Lauren. New subscriber, from Tasmania, Australia. Loving it so far! Highs and lows are a given wherever you live your life. You just need to chase the place where the highs, outweigh the lows. I think you've found yours. Trust me, I've been there! I am so impressed at how you looked at this issue and got it sorted. Great that you had back up from your friends. I'm what you could call a Jack of All Trades. Can do pretty much anything I set my mind to. I'm blessed with good hands that seem to find their own way...EXCEPT, when it comes to anything electrical. I saw that mess of wires in the bilge and my hands went "Nope", brain turned into a scribble... completely confused and has never seemed to want to learn!? Kudos to you for being capable and being able to sort. Well done. Looking forward to checking out your back catalogue. Keep it up. Rob

Ive been in those situations and you handled it with grace. Its tough when everything turns into a shit show and theres greasy dirty and wet stuff on your setee, tables and galley. I was in my bilge fixing motors non stop till I moved everything electrical out of the bilge area and my liveaboard life got WAAAY better. My plan is to build my next boat myself with all the lessons I learned from living aboard. Cheers to you, youre awesome! great videos.

Welcome to life on a boat Like you said, just when it’s going great, something goes wrong. Cruising is just boat repair in exotic locations with minimal tools and materials. Fortunately the boating community is very helpful, and it never huts to be a beautiful blonde.

I have a 14M steel yacht which has a steel tube for the prop shaft. There are roller bearings in the tube and it is oil filled with seals either end. A brilliant system that in thirty years of use has never leaked and only needs an annual oil change. If you are serious about doing ocean passages I would recommend your boat meet the New Zealand Category One standard. One of the requirements being a hand operated bilge pump!

Lauren, I’m proud of you! You really showed your strength to get things taken care of and not crumble. That takes a lot of strength. You did good! I’m glad Bayner was there to help you. Good moral support too. Wish I had money to send you. Maybe someday. You take care of you sending love from California💜🫶😎🤗🇺🇸⛵️

Great job getting this sorted and keeping your cool. A PIA for sure. It is odd that the seal was loose like that all at once. Bellows May weaken over time and start to loose contact with the stainless collar but never an abrupt change like that. I HAVE seen where the shaft itself has slid fwd in the coupling and the seal becomes loose. While your in there, check your coupling set screws and make sure she hasn’t moved. Good luck.

Here's a tip. I you would cut the floors out all around the engine and put them on hedges with locks. When you need to work on the engine like that you could just open up the floors and have all that workspace you need and could keep a better eye on everything. Just a thought. Great Video. :)

Thanks for posting this. I've never had a mechanical seal on a sailboat prop shaft. I've always had packing glands or stuffing boxes. It's good to have an idea of how these things work. I'm sure that I'll run into one of these sooner or later. I'm glad to see that you had such a practical approach to dealing with this sort of problem. You're good crew for sure.

Terrific episode, two were definitely better than one during this crisis. You were blessed to have help. It didn’t look like bad luck but more like the problem was inevitable given your setup. God bless, you will be much safer than before.

as a follow on, glad to see others have said get the electric out of the bilge,, even into a locker so its still hidden away..always keep a spare 12v 30a solar controller , or inverter, and 12v water pump, kept up high in a ceiling locker. ..just because the boat came with the stuff placed where it is when you bought it, doesnt mean its in the right place..this is a learning curve for you

Wow! that was scary!!! So sorry for the problem...good idea to sit down and come up with some emergency checklists that reflect what you've learned. Glad you had help, two hands can only do so much. Get critical functions out of the bilge or setup a backup system. It is tough when you have so many complex systems. You'll figure it out and your friends will help you. Looked like good fishing so there's that. Sea snails look good too! Mmmm...does the Wonderkat like those? Love your boat- she will keep chugging for you. Sounds from the comments that you are getting some modeling gigs- awesome! Looking forward to next week! Thank you 🤗
