Most people will start with a reverse diet/finding their maintenance calories. Once you do, which could take anywhere from 2-4 months, you decide whether your goal is gaining muscle or losing fat, and go from there (calories above maintenance vs calories below maintenance). Those phases can last anywhere from 1-12 months or really however long it takes you to reach your goal. Although with cutting, it’s not recommended to cut for longer than a 2-4 months as running on a deficit can be very taxing on your body in a variety of different ways. Bulks can last much longer because you’re giving your body all the building blocks it needs plus some to gain weight and remain healthy. You can switch between phases by going back into your “maintenance/reverse diet” phase where you gradually bring your calories back up or down to your maintenance level. I think the key is staying in those phases long enough for them to actually work and show results. This all takes a loooottt of time. This is basically the opposite of fad dieting.

Little rule of thumb, you want to reverse (or bulk) to an amount of calories so that when you cut you aren't restricting and you aren't below ~1400 for women and ~1800 for men. Ideally you'd get calories up high enough so it's a but hard to eat it all. Then when you cut, you're not hungry or feel like your restricting

so I use the app carbon diet coach because I had no clue where to start - you answer a few questions about current routine/goals you have and they calculate your macros for you and they check in with you once a week and will adjust your macros automatically for you if you aren’t reaching your goals - I highly highly recommend this app (not sponsored or anything I found it on my own!)

if you want to cancel you go into apple settings and manage your subscriptions there! and healthies has a 7 day free trial and if you cancel before the trial ends you won’t be charged 🫶🏼
